in reply to: Bench Grinder vs Broadhead #8868In my 13 1/2 years with archery equipment early on I decided to go with the same rule I use with knives, if I have to work hard to put an edge on it, it isn’t an investment I am willing to indulge in.
I have some very good top of the line hand made hunting knives. All of them came with the correct bevel for best edge retention with heavy use and I have never had to sharpen them more than 15 minutes at the very most after hard bone splitting use to get them razor sharp again.
Of the broad heads I have used in those 13 1/2 years, the ones that meet the criteria that I hold dear, have been the ones that have been most recommended by the “old timers”, that have tried every thing from the original muzzy’s to the latest in the heavy 2 blade, 3 to 1 broad heads.
I don’t like to plug products for any one, so I won’t say which I have come to rely on for all my hunting needs…. but some old, opinionated elk hunter, who shall remain nameless (Dave):D, has influenced me, as well as others, plus my own experience with the 225 gr version of his recommended 300 grain broad head has sold me on “tuff” quality.
They’re worth the expense, remember you get what you pay for.

in reply to: installing fur silencers (quick & easy) #53994I’m a fan of otter fur, it seems the tighter short hair works better than the longer thinner type furs. Musk rat would be my second choice. Fur just feels right.

But those blue gills, crappie and perch sure do taste delicious with some hush puppies on the side. I found a new reason to appreciate 20″ inches of ice on the water.

Jeremy,
Ya know with a couple pieces of ply wood and some old canvas with 2 4×4’s for runners you can make a fold up ice house. Then you can stare at a 7″ hole with out the wind chill.:D
in reply to: how good is good enough? #33921Solo, welcome and don’t get discouraged,
I practiced at 5 then 10 then 15 then 20 having gotten to the point I could put all my arrows (3) per round in a 3-5″ circle, at each distance, standing flat and steady with as little distraction or wind as possible, before moving back to the next one. Practicing at “true” hunting angles and positions at each distance, I’m happy to keep my 3 arrows per round in a 6 inch circle, just so I will be able to put 1 arrow within the kill zone in relation to the “spot” I pick when I’m shaking so hard from the adrenalin of being so close to my query or so out of breath I’m gasping like a fish out of water. Anything past 20 yards my accuracy goes down hill fast. I do practice past 20 yards all the way out to 40 yards being happy to keep my arrows in a 10-15″ circle, and I only do it to feel more confident at 15-20 yards or closer, that being my self imposed max distance on any animal I am hunting. It took me about 10-12 years to get to the point I felt ethically comfortable setting that max prior to that my hunting max distance started at 10-12 then 12-15, and so on as I progressed in accuracy.
I hunted for ten years for the “right shot” at my first animal with a long bow and she was only 8 yards out, so don’t think you can’t hunt until your ace’n it at 30 just set your limit and stick to it.
Good luck and keep at it

Oh and my first 8 yard shot after ten years of hunting……. I missed!! 😳
in reply to: A late Christmas gift…to me #27641Beautiful bow! The simple off set of color the black locust adds is artfully done. You have a talent that I’m envious of like many others here that have the talent to make their own bows.:D
Thank you for sharing.

Ya know Bruce, this bow could very well be “The One”!
It’s awesome when you find The One! 😉
Out of curiosity, what are the woods used on that bow? I really like the limbs.
Vikke had thought the wood was Bocote, but she was going to verify with Yote. He said that it is Bocote- limbs, Bocote and black micarta(for strength)-riser, with Bocote and maple tips.
Smooth sweet shooting bow- just waiting for temps to get up closer to zero to fine tune my arrows.
I just can’t seem to get in the mood when it’s -27 in the morning. I did get out and shoot a little when it warmed up to -10.
Looking forward to working in New Mexico next week. 😉
in reply to: Christmas Wolfer #19367I am not sure about the woods, I believe the limbs are walnut, but I’m checking with Vicki today and will let you know for sure.
Edit: I spoke with Vikke and she didn’t know for sure but thought it was a dark Bocote.

The BHA in Boise is where I got to first see and handle the wolfer also.
The grip just feels natural and comfortable and the dang thing shoots like a dream.:D
Ya know Bruce, this bow could very well be “The One”!
Edit: This is also my first recurve, all of my other bows are long bows.
in reply to: Merry Xmass to all #16939Merry Christmas and safe new year to all.
in reply to: What ya got goin? #16464That sounds great. I’m still looking into the area I’m going to be in for places that have some hogs that they want to scare.
