Great deer….congrats on a cool hunt.:D
in reply to: Need info for WV deer hunt #11657If they are checking for CWD, you will likely only need the head….there’s a node in their noggin used to test for CWD. As far as the hunting…..tree stands would give you a leg up for sure (har, har), but it can be pulled off from the ground given a good blind and/or cover. In the hills, saddles are a fantastic spot to set up for whitetails…..also edges with good cover and hard mast.
Good luck, Dave.
in reply to: Interesting Article in American Hunter #50375I had a number of classes under Karl Miller back in my ol’ Ivory Tower days…..he knows the ecology of white-tailed deer as well as anyone. But yeah….I don’t spend any money on “doe-in-heat” scents….

Yep. I’d be hesitant, like the others said. Alot of folks like the “idea” of a wilderness hunt until they get there…..and then the very things that attract us to the backcountry throw them out of equilibrium and all they can think about is getting home….
Sounds like he wants a watered down elk hunt.
in reply to: Sorry….Just a pet peeve of mine. #49821Ok.
in reply to: Bugling in June #46500I’ve heard summer bugling in the Big Horns. I assumed (you know what that means)it was somewhat akin to turkeys gobbling on nice days in January.
Interesting about the cows….
in reply to: Sapelo summer hog hunt! #45714Good hunt, Marty. Congrats on the groceries. That area looks familiar, lol.:D
in reply to: Instinctive Shooting: Practice Distances #37191I rarely shoot much past 25 yards. But I find longer practice yardage makes those 15 yard shots (my preferred range) easier.
in reply to: Lowcountry hogs #36636Missed one of the suckers the other morning…..going back with blood in my eye.
Come on down, USMC….we’ll fry up a bunch of redbreasts and have cheese grits and hushpuppies.:D
