Nice hat……8)
It’s been a good fall, and I have high hopes for a great winter. As usual, I’m dreaming of turkeys already, but Im awfully antsy about the backpack bear hunt next fall. Let the good times roll.:D
in reply to: Cooking recipes for mallard? #57048The duck prosciutto sounds interesting!
in reply to: Cooking recipes for mallard? #57044Like Etter said, rather than breasting the duck, try plucking and using the whole carcass. My favorite mallard dish is roasted duck with mushroom and sherry sauce, served over wild rice. I don’t have a link to the recipe, but could provide it if you’re interested…..its the old “Remington Mallards” recipe. For simplicity (and still quite delectable) we often do duck pot pie or duck gumbo.
The carcass of a duck (and remnant meat pieces) makes a phenomenal broth for soups, etc.
It is my favorite game meat, as well.:D
in reply to: Hipsters who hunt #41144Sounds like some of my friends too, Dan. Speaking of organic gardens, wonder if it’d be off topic to have a thread with some gardening/homestead photos? Ties in with the Tradtional mindset….
in reply to: Hipsters who hunt #39723Not a problem, Robin. I consider myself “Left” on some things (mostly environmental and social) and “Right” on others (mostly fiscal)…..with great friends on both sides. I think political leanings have been mentioned here because that was an important component of the article.
Sorry if this post offended anyone, the intention of my post was that ethical hunting with good intentions is becoming more mainstream in places where it may not have once been as widely accepted. Regardless of one’s political leanings, that is a good thing, in my humble opinion.

It leaves a sour taste in my mouth.. only for the fact that it’s all about shooting, score of the buck, and “pimping” a product…
If some of these guys and gals would take some time to show some honest woodsmanship and teaching segments, I wouldn’t knock them as bad. Problem is, I don’t think more than half of them could hunt if they didn’t have an outfitter doing all the work for them.

Agree, Tommy. I saw the guys on GON pushing that show “Combat in the Wild”. I just don’t like to equate the animals we revere and love to hunt as the enemy to be defeated in mortal combat. You know me brother, I’m not completely a pie-in-the-sky kinda feller, but it just rubs me the wrong way. But enough I guess, we’ve been over that a bunch!:D
Back to the article, I’ve seen the dynamic changing for years with regards to hunting among segments of the educated, “hip” crowd. We’ve been dabbling in the local food/micro farming arena for awhile, and have seen the interest and acceptance growing from those folks. I think its a great thing.
I may be really identifying myself now, but when my little girl was born the midwife was even interested in bartering venison in lieu of monetary fees.:D
in reply to: More Blackbeard Island Pics #39436Awesome pics, pal. Please disregard my snarky post in the other thread. 😀
in reply to: Blackbeard Bound! #39432Post some pics already, Tommy…..geez. I wish I could hear some of the “Tom” conversations bound to take place on this lion hunt.
in reply to: Elkhearts, old and new #30330Ahh, you fellers are killing me. I’ve been dearly wanting a Shrew (Classic Hunter? Samurai?) for sometime now. This Elkheart model is a fine looking bow, and may be the ticket.
in reply to: Blackbeard Bound! #30324“A three hour tour……a three hour tour…..”:D
in reply to: Blackbeard Bound! #30322Great photos as usual, Sean. Seeing these makes me miss camp, and mooching Bunyan’s Sierra Nevadas.8) Though I’ve yet to even draw back on a deer there, there’s something surreal about sitting over the palmettos listening to the waves crash……Hopefully I’ll be back in camp next year. Some 8 wt fly rods need to be on the boat for redfish and trout in the grass.
in reply to: Machine-gun archery! #24877That’s amazing. I’ve read Catlin’s accounts of Native shooters, but seeing such action live (and with accuracy, no less) is numbing. Wow!
