in reply to: How many times per week do you hunt? #58607
Ben, I’m pretty much in the same situation as you. I’m 38, with two kids and a wife (who is very supportive of me hunting). Venison is our staple…..we eat 5 or so deer each year. If I don’t kill it, we don’t usually eat it. Back in my life B.C., I hunted 4 or 5 days a week. Can’t and won’t do that now, as other things are more important.
Lately, I’m lucky to have three hunts each week…..which has made it tough to fill the freezer because sightings have been terrible thus far. I’d love to go as often as I used to, but it does make each trip a little more important….try to soak it all in while I’m there! Luckily, my little boy is starting to hunt with me and loves it….so Mama may be sending us both out of the house before long. Pleeeassse don’t throw me in the briar patch!:D
in reply to: Adding weight just before kickoff #54510Fwiw, I ended up going with 100 grains of insert screw-on weights, which brought my total point weight up to 345 gr, (27% efoc). Total arrow weight 591 grains.
I paper tuned them and got them flying like darts. Have yet to release one on a critter, but they really hammer a stup or a target.

in reply to: The 2013 Season Bulletin Board #40497Going on two weeks now without a deer sighting. Strange season so far, but still months to go. The worm will turn eventually.:D
in reply to: Blood Trailing #40462Quick tip (Especially for treestand hunters): Use your compass to immediately take a bearing from your tree to the last location where you saw the critter, or where you heard the last crash. Things look a whole lot different from the ground, and this can really help finding blood, the arrow, or the animal.
Carry your compass and learn to use it. I use a Silva Ranger for everything, but any orienteering or lensatic compass would work.

in reply to: After the Harvest #36805I prefer to hang meat in a walk-in cooler with the skin on, but I rarely have access to one. Soooo…….I put in plastic bags in the fridge, or most commonly, in a cooler with ice and the drain plug open. It’s important not to let it sit in water, but this does a fine job of aging as long as you keep an ample supply of ice. Once the meat chills, the ice lasts a good while.
Doing it this way, I leave the meat in for at least a week…..a few days longer is even better. The meat is incredibly tender and has a texture when slicing/processing that makes you want to eat it raw.:D
