Agreed. Really enjoyed it, as usual. Seems a long time watching the mailbox between issues!
Venison jerky, Clif bars, Trail mix (with granola, M&Ms, coconut, nuts, etc.). One thing I did before a backpack turkey hunt was to fry a bunch of bass filets really good and crispy, and bag em up. The weather was cool, they kept for days and provided a nice little punch of protein, fat, and energy.

Nice pics, Bunyan.

in reply to: Backcountry College – Navigation II #57087These are really nice.
I’m teaching compass use, orienteering, and pacing as part of a course this next semester. You’d be amazed how many young folks with degrees in the natural resources field are completely clueless on how to find their way around without a gps. It doesn’t seem to be emphasized much anymore. Like Clay pointed out, they pay so much attention to the the screen they have no context for where they are in relation to where they started, or where they’re going.
Anyhoo….if it is ok (and I assume it is), I plan to show these two vids in class to drive the point home and break up my monotonous instruction. Thanks.
in reply to: The 2013 Season Bulletin Board #53712Now that’s cold. Once upon a time I was a lift op at Big Sky, not too far from you. We’d run the lifts if it was -25 or warmer. Never figured out how flying down a mountain in -25 degree weather was enough fun to pay for.

78 high
61 low:shock:
Pretty sure that means I should go fishing.

Yep….I actually love all the different accents across this country (down with the homogenization of regional dialects!)…they vary even within the same state, much like barbeque styles.
But I don’t like the exaggerated accents and often intentionally poor grammar. And I still say ya’ll, too.:D
in reply to: On TeeVee hunting heroes #49353Nice comments folks.
On a personal level, the Michael Waddell-type buffoons are embarrassing to me as a hunter AND as a southerner. We have enough other burdens to overcome. Sadly, there are way too many folks like that (optimistically I say most aren’t, but I’m surely wrong) but we aren’t all that way. There’s an old hunting and conservation ethic in certain places down here that is quiet and deep…with some serious and thoughtful master woodsmen who don’t give two damns about all that adolescent silliness.
We need to continue to speak up as voices of sanity. Hopefully we are beginning to see a backlash against this new outdoor “culture”. Join groups that stand up for what is right. Get involved in some way.
in reply to: Killed a Beautiful Bear Today! #40704Very nice. Sounds like a great winter project. I’ll be working on some hickory bows this winter, myself. Have two trees (material for 8 staves) waiting patiently in the barn. I’m hoping for an osage stave for Christmas.:D
Congrats again on a great hunt with a selfbow.
in reply to: Blackbeard Bound! #40699Hate to miss it for the second year in a row. The new job may have some perks, but asking for vacation in the first week ain’t one of em. Next year!!
Have fun, fellas.:D
in reply to: Killed a Beautiful Bear Today! #39573Hey Ptaylor, I can’t tell from the photo…..is that a selfbow in your bear pic?
