in reply to: Big Thick Soft Warm Wool Sweater #15082
I’ll second G. Fred’s site and also Ron LaClair’s Longhunter Shirt. I love the Longhunter Shirt myself. Very authentic, WARM, and period correct.
in reply to: Hunting Public land #14732Good Point, Herald! And welcome!
in reply to: A REGRESS FOR MS BOWHUNTERS #14719All comes down to the Almighty Dollar. I know here in New York, the state is nothing but red ink and in dire budgetary straits so to speak. These state conservation departments are not managing wildlife, they are managing their budgets and anything to increase license sales to them is a good thing. New York says the same thing, but it doesn’t take a genius to figure out that 15 -20 years ago at night there’d be 30 to 40 deer in one field, now you’re lucky if you see 15 !!! We need BETTER hunters not more hunters.
Technology, Greed and a good dose of near-sighted stupidity is ruining our sport. That gunner you mentioned only demonstrated how little bandwidth of knowledge he actually has.
in reply to: Choosing the right bow #14649I think the fact that you have a neighbor that has introduced you to traditional archery should help you off to a good start. The best advise I have is don’t be in a hurry to BUY right away. Got to a few traditional shoots, or check with the traditional archers in your area. Try out a few bows before you decide. Your bow is an extension of yourself, you must be completely comfortable with it. If you were a compound shooter previously, my immediate reaction would be to check out a Recurve first, since they would be a similar “fit” as a compound. would also recommend starting out with a 40-45 # bow at your draw length, or at least 10# ligther than your compound. Hope that helps, please feel free to PM me also anytime.
in reply to: Hunting Public land #12904Agree.. we all need to be outspoken steward’s of the land and the environment. We have a lot common ground with non-hunter’s on this one as well.

in reply to: Hunting Public land #11636Dave… as Alex will tell you. When everyone hears “New York”. The mental picture is always Times Square or Harlem. But, New York State has tons of State Parks & State Forests, a couple of them larger than some states! Of course these are “mountain” deer which are tougher to hunt than the corn fed variety, but like any Whitetail, find the food source and you find the deer.8)
in reply to: Hunting Public land #11478Here in Southeastern New York State we have a lot of State Park areas that are “Bow Hunting Only” for the entire 3 months of deer season. It seems that most Compound Bow Hunters abandon their bows for bang sticks once the firearm season kicks in, so those bow only bowhunters tend to have free run of many 1000’s of acres for ourselves for the later 2/3’s of the season. hard to beat and the deer are either unpressured or move into the area due to neighboring areas being open to firearms.

Got Snow…? Just a few inches today. Wet heavy stuff, so I got the snowblower out to get it up. Otherwise it’ll freeze overniight. And a real son of a gun tomorrow. Of course, wouldn’t you know, I just got finished and the county snow plow just came by! I swear he hides around the corner and just waits for me to finish! Oh well, another 16 to 20 tomorrow. With any luck hopefully I won’t have to shovel the roof yet anyway.

P.S. please don’t call me Sir.. I work for a living too!
in reply to: delaware crossbows proposals #60247Snuffy.. No worries. Actually for the most part we are in agreement. We need better hunters, quality hunters. Those who care deeply about the animals, the environment, the experience of the hunt, use of the quads that God gave them, the preservation of values, the public image of hunters and the spirit of fair chase. If that is what is in their heart, I won’t judge what they carry in their hands.
I would rather get along and compromise. Because sportsman fighting sportsman is just crazy.
Times change and many times we can’t prevent that. As long as I can preserve what I and we do. Than I (we) haven’t lost.
Traditional Archery will always be my passion because it is a way of life and of ideals for me. I believe in propagating traditional archery passionately and passing it on to the next generation. But to those who hear a different drummer – whatever rows their boat.
in reply to: delaware crossbows proposals #60156This door was opened long ago, when the compound came on the scene. Too late to go crying over spilt milk now. I sit on the fence on this one. But I am for it, if it gets more young people into the outdoors. The fact that I shoot by choice, a longbow during archery, gun and muzzleloader seasons is a freedom I enjoy and is my business. If it is legal and done in a fair chase manner, who am I to deny anyone else their preference. Personally from what I see and read of it, the crossbow hunter is more handicapped than the compound bowhunter.
JMO.. I know it is unpopular.
