I guess it is all personal preference. I have never shot anything but longbows. And that’s all I care too shoot. Just something about a longbow. They are harder to master, and I do take some pride in that. I think the bottom line is.. I’m just a hopeless romantic. And all the changes we are forced to make in life, my choice of hunting preference is very important to me.

With a long long bow, long arrows, lots of feathers, a heavy point, a smooth glove, and a little luck I can hold my own…

We all have those days. Some days I’m hittin’ em like Howard Hill, and the next day couldn’t hit the ground if I tried! On days where the focus is gone.. it’s better to make arrows instead! 😆

Steve G.. I like your analysis that’s great info. Interesting about the 90 degree angle.

I am not much of a physicist, but I have found in the standard 3 x 5″ fletch I get excellent arrow flight using a straight clamp with only 1 degree offset for both Field tips and broadheads.

Frank.. I agree.. I won’t bash them all. I like “Elk Chronicles” by the RMEF. And also “Eastman’s Hunting / Bowhunting Journal” (although I was sad to see they signed up with the Forrest Gump crowd – Primos). “On Your Own Adventures” seems to be a good show too. It is better than nothing at all. But, real quality is hard to come by.

I remember when there was only the American Sportsman.. and that was a good show.

The “Outhouse Channel” I coined from Dave Peterson. 😆

I have used both 3×5 and 4×4 and have found each to have their own merit. For the most part it depends on the shooter’s set up, bow tuning, etc. Doing the math.. a 3×5 has the same equal feather material on the shaft as a 4×4. 3×5 being 15 total inches and 4×4 being 16 total inches; however the 3×5 has a higher profile so the amount of overall feather material is apprx. the same. If one shoots cock feather out on a 3×5 the same amount of material passes the shelf as a 4×4, if shooting cock feather in the 3×5 has 50% less material passing over the shelf.

That said, if the bow is tuned properly, paradox should not have any feather contact with the shelf to even matter.

Feathers stablize the arrow coming out of paradox.Four fletch may actually stablize the arrow quicker. But to many it’s debatable.

                Net Net = Individual preference.

I have to agree. A different time. And a different mindset by both hunters and the viewing public at large.

Video-wise… HH was a show man.

Comparing Fred Bear videos to Howard Hill’s is like apples and oranges. But if you read some of the early accounts of Fred’s hunting experiences his own long range, questinable ” draw and pray” shots would be frowned upon today as well.

By they were the early pioneers that brought bowhunting to the fore front. Whatever they did. I am just thankful for it.

It is easy to be an armchair quarterback concerning the “Outhouse Channel” shows of today. Because, a lot of what these buffoons show is unacceptable to many of us. But to the wheel & techno-easy at any cost crowd they don’t see it our way either.

Different times and different showman.. I believe because how hunting is more visible today, it is also placed more under the microscope and studied. Ethics is a good thing.

I wonder how many folk use a leather strop when they sharpen their knives and broadheads. It is the stropping thst gets rid of the burrs.

If you’re already cutting hairs… why would you not be satisified with that? 🙄

The rubber band test too is a good one too!

BTW.. I don’t need to shave my forearms to test them… ol butter fingers here cuts himself up pretty good without even trying! 😆

Seriously, been doing it long enough, all I have to do is look at them, I am confisdent they are sharp enough.

Yeah, I’m debating taking the fifth! But more often than not, I tend break or lose usually one or two per 3D Shoot. 😆

My reaction was the same as Patrick’s. It’s way too cold and not enough foot protection with those. That said, I think you could get the same underfoot “feel” and stealth from a pair of LL Bean rubber guide boot shoes. I’ve used them and it works for me.

Good tip. I had a similiar experience about 15 years ago. Went out hunting in early archery season with my son, the area we were hunting was a ridge top with multiple saddles to the top, it was still dark when we finally reached our spots, I was sitting on a dead tree overlooking a saddle depressiona and trail below, as the sun began to come up and warm up, I noticed I was literally covered with hornets just waking up. They had their nest inside the dead tree. I very slowly lifted up my pack, bow and wlked away no worse for the experience. But grateful it went the way it did. Could have been a lot worse.
