in reply to: Predators and A Hunter's Conscience #26149
Yes… we had a family of Coyotes on the ridge behind my house a few years ago. They took one of our cats. Bad points: They didn’t take the other one! 😆
in reply to: Question… thoughts on BH Tuning #26026Had to inspect and fine tune my point tapers a bit. As well as adjust my Nock Height. Good to go now. 8)
in reply to: Shrew Haven West #26020Dave.. I guess you cannot bow hunt in the Gun Season? Or don’t want too?
Part of me wants to say, Sorry you guys didn’t connect. But, the other part of me, knows you guys gathered up some memories and experiences that are worth a lifetime! 8)
We hunt for the hunt’s sake. Everything else is a special gift.
Go Get your Deer! & Good Hunting!
in reply to: Predators and A Hunter's Conscience #23517Hi, Dave. I agree with you completely. And do not disagree with the management of predators. Since we have already altered the environment, it is man’s responsibility to manage that environment. All things are connected, but all things pay a price for mis-management, as well.
So there are plenty pf predator hunters out there, we are just of a different spirit.
Good Luck! Go Get that Elk!
Love it! 😀
in reply to: Early PA Doe Season #23058Congrats! Nice Deer! Luck smiles on those who are prepared! 8)
in reply to: Archery in Western MA? #23026BSD… that is a shame. I have been a Hunter Ed Instructor for 20 years. My advise, just drop out or hang in there an finish it for the 10 hours or so required. In either case, I would not hesitate to make a formal complaint to your Fish & Wildlife Education division. Suggest to them to place an undercover officer in the next class, if it is as bad, they will shut him down.
in reply to: I lost my first deer this weekend… #22943Well Blake.. we’ll just have to see how my Eclipse 145 Broadheads do!!! 8):D
in reply to: Pre-Rut Hunt, Pointers #22938Stick to the ridgetops particularly those with acorns. Here in New York State I am seeing scrapes beginning to open up. So watch for them. I also many times hunt “mountain deer” where hemlock and acorns appear to be the food source. Deer are just like us, not lazy but will use trails and ridge saddles to travel and preserve energy. Find the acorns you’ll find the deer.
The other thread talks about a Vanilla Extract and it is an attractant, but the older deer and larger bucks will shy away from it.
Deer at this time of year, still tend to be in there summer pattern, the advantage is.. they haven’t wised up to being shot at again yet.
in reply to: Question… thoughts on BH Tuning #22343Thanks, All. Yes, the spine is correct. I suspect it is more of an alignment issue. So I am going to increase the broadhead weight a bit and re-taper the point taper.
I suspect another piece of this is me – since I do not practice with broadheads all the time only about a month or longer before the season opens.
in reply to: Question… thoughts on BH Tuning #21752Thanks, George. 8)
in reply to: New bow, need help please #2174840 Lbs. is plenty for Whitetails. Use a Heavy Broadhead (125 to 145 gr) and keep your range close.
in reply to: Vanilla Cover Scent tip #21385Well.. Vanilla is a natrual attractant. From that perspective, it will bring in deer, basically because of curiosity. It is good in early season use. I have used it as an attractant in the past, it will bring in deer particularly early in the season. Older deer – patriarchal does and larger bucks will however find it suspect from the start. Young deer and smaller bucks will come in to it without hesitation.
Now.. if you are Black Bear hunting.. use 1 Part distilled water, 2 parts vanilla extract and 1 part Anise Oil. Bears will come to it. AS AN ATTRACTANT – Anise is pretty strong and you don’t want to walk around smelling like Licorice.
Just my experience.
in reply to: The trees are on fire… #21209Best time of year!
in reply to: I lost my first deer this weekend… #20778Sorry about your loss. It is tough. Been there too. Anyone who has not had a lost animal or a bad hit just hasn’t been at it long enough. That said, one thing I’ve learned over the years. I have regretted few shots, but I have never regretted not taking a shot.
What Duncan and Steve said. “Humped Up”.. yup tell tale reaction of a gut shot deer, he is mortally hit but needs about 6 to 8 hours to die. Pushing him too early just chases him into the next county. HOWEVER, nothing in nature goes to waste, the local coyote, wolf, bobcat and bear all thank you very much! 🙂
You are now a better hunter for the experience.
Good Hunting!
