in reply to: Tuning stiffer spines than expected #21344
Thanks for the advice….guess I won’t be so OCD….with my next set of shafts
in reply to: Tuning stiffer spines than expected #5015755# Tomahawk
grizzly single bevels
three 5″ low cut bananas from my own Turkey feathers
27 in DL
Nocks are lined up correctly.
I figured all feathers do is correct an improperly tuned arrow. Ive bare shaft tuned and paper tuned all my arrows from up close and personal to 20yds with great results. From my Heavy FOC arrow to my lighter shafts. Ive since fletched these new shafts and they do fly as expected. I never really thought the conventional 1″ of shaft past the riser worked for everyone. I order matched sets, I’m just a little surprised at how much i had to go up in spine just to get them to fly straight……I may very well be the odd ball
in reply to: fur fletch #21839i really didnt pay attention to the FOC on my arrow. I got the idea from this arrow. It Flies like a flu flu minus the noise. It does look cool. Im gonna try again this evening to post. ill be better off emailing the pics. nothing fancy but fun to play around with different materials.
in reply to: fur fletch #19873well its done, they fly ok and no noise. I don’t think they would be wise to use if they get wet. Im still trying to learn how to resize these pics.
in reply to: fur fletch #18804After reading this thread I cant help but open up my fly tying drawers and pull out some cross-cut rabbit strips. I’m gonna fletch an arrow or two with the fur. I might need help posting pics but Ill get it done. Im excited to seehear the outcome. Thanks for the Idea. These crosscut strips are already cut just right to fit a fletching clamp.
Ill get back to you guys

in reply to: EFOC in flight #56117did you have a cross wind? I can see the arrow in paradox, its the last pic that i see it tail right. You sir are brave. im gonna try and record my flight as well. something tells me that the cell phone is gonna get hit.
Thanks for the photos you gave me a real good idea..
in reply to: Straight Fletching Clamps #55640Thanks for all the advice. I shoot 360 up front of my arrows with AA fletching. My daughter has bareshaft tuned her POC shafts out of her 40# bow. I am keeping her arrows simple with 125 grn broadheads because I really dont know how far i can push her FOC. I really dont want to over load her arrows. What would be a descent weight? 150grn out of a 40# bow at her DL? Now as far as what she will be hunting with these arrows, it will be javelinas and hogs. I totally agree that these shaft will be to noisy. Her deer arrows have a plain trad fletch at 4″s. I will post pics of her arrows when they are completed. Anything to keep bow hunting for her exciting….so Fantasy arrows it is. I will be staying with the helical because it is a light arrow and i want it flying true with a BH. This was awesome advice… thanks
in reply to: A first harvest… #53079I started my daughter shooting a longbow about 2 years ago. She’d taken a interest from seeing me practice out in the back yard. Well after watching Masters of the bare bow several times and writing down the rules to shooting the longbow and placing them on her wall..a huntress was born. We’ve been on several trips and this Laredo trip was the one that I will carry with me all my days. (We came up on these Javi’s and had to sneak in quietly. Once we were close enough for a shot we were ducking behind a fallen Mesquite tree. 2 of the Javi’s had spotted movement but the wind was in our favor. They were a little skittish at first then finally one came in within shooting range, it spotted her and she stood motionless for about 5 minutes. This went on for awhile and the Javi turned broadside. She looks at me excited and barely able to speak. I had asked her if she was ready and she whispered, I an do this. She raised her bow and I could see that her blood was pumping hard, her bow wasn’t steady. I told her to go through the steps in her head and let it fly. She found her composure and raised her bow again, she drew and lowered her bow after she anchored and released. Brother It seemed like time had stopped as the arrow took flight. Her arrow took hit her target and the Javi took off running. We both were quiet and listened…..The Javi darted off and we heard it hit the ground shortly after. I hugged my daughter so tight and she was proud of her accomplishment. She knew she had made daddy proud. We tracked it and she found her arrow. I pointed out to her that there were air bubble on the broken shaft and that it was a perfect lung shot. 15 yds later we found her kill. You can tell by the smile on her face that she was happy. She was bowhunting way before trad archery was even cool with our youth of today. She’s not Katniss, she’s my daughter and I’m Darn proud of her. The good lord chose to give me a girl and he gave me a friend a Daughter and a hunting partner for life. Thanks for the nice comments folks..Thanks for the posting Alex……
in reply to: bare shaft tunning wood arrows #51965scotty95 wrote: I’m having trouble bare shaft tunning wood arrows. Does anyone have any advice to help me out . I shoot a black:cry::cry:widow kb 54# @ 28″ with a 26″ draw length
Ill try to help buddy. Start with your 55-60 spined arrow full length tipped with you 125 grn field tip. Shoot at from about 12 to 15 yds so that you are able to see its flight. dont cant your bow, shoot it straight up and down for tuning purposes only. While the arrow is in flight, notice whether it flies or hits the target (tail left or right) my guess is with a full length arrow you will initially see the arrow fly tail right. At this point cut an inch at a time and monitor its flight to the target. As you keep cutting in these small increments you will see the arrow correct itself and fly like a dart once it reaches its desired length. Listen to the arrow. I noticed you had said that your are looking at tears. Are you paper tuning or bare shaft tuning with a target only. I hope i was able to shed some light on this topic for you. Youtube has some real compressive video on this topic. Im currently having my daughter bareshaft some new arrows ive made for her. you’ll get it scot.. good luck
in reply to: Is 10 GPP enough for elk? #42790is there a real significant difference in speed? Ive been looking at these foam core bows for a while now but Im not sure if it will make a real big difference.
in reply to: Oil rub arrow finish? #37573Thanks Mr. Petersen. Ive been following every word here on this thread and my excitement for learning new ways to skin a cat grows with every post. I really do like using Tung Oil rather than having to lacquer. Thanks to everyone who shared their knowledge here.
in reply to: Oil rub arrow finish? #35483ok guys I’ve already wiped down a dozen shafts and sanded them with wool 3 times. Now, what is the final step… do i end with sanding again and wiping with mineral spirits or do i end with another wiping of Tung oil and then sanding or just wiping. This sound crazy but im trying to follow the instructions of experience.. Help
thanks guys
BTW…they do look sharp
in reply to: Oil rub arrow finish? #29469How long should I wait prior to fletching? Im off to a big box store to buy my Tung oil. I just purchased some Cedar shafts for my Daughter and want to surprise her with some spiffy new arrows for our Fall hunt.
in reply to: Feather Processing #18592Thanks for the advice Ben. I recently saw some arrows on a website fletched with Guinea Foul feathers. I really thought it looks slick. Im trying to figure out where i can get some of those feathers for fletching my arrows.
One more question? Do you just use the fine grit. I figure the coarse is overkill…
