in reply to: Fletching Glue Quandry #27651
Agree with Grumpy. It’s either fletching tape or lock tite gel super glue. The gel does not run and is the easiest glue to work with. Also sets up quicker than most other glues. Steve
in reply to: THEY HAVE GONE TOO FAR…….. #27615I feel your pain Grumpy. Some nights they wake me up frolicking outside the bedroom window….of course that’s after they knocked over the fence and helped themselves to the garden. So now, I go to the local farm stand for fresh vegetables and fruit. Steve

in reply to: To Foot or not to Foot #53518An aluminum footing most definitely helps with the structural integrity of a carbon arrow provided the arrow is well tuned to the bow. Is it necessary? Probably not, but could be helpful if heavy bone is encountered. Another benefit is the increased FOC. I’ve been footing all my carbon set-ups for the past three years and have been satisfied with the results. Steve
in reply to: The Best Buck I Never Killed #62421I have to agree. One of the best articles I’ve read in a while. Reminds me of a person I met while hunting turkeys in SE Ohio in the early 90’s. This guy was a true woodsman. Here wore faded camo and hunted with an old recurve. One day he told me he was going to kill a turkey that was gobbling from roost on a specific ridge…. only thing was he was going to hunt about a mile and a half from that ridge. I asked him why he was going to hunt so far from the roosted bird? He answered by telling me every day for the past 2 weeks that specific turkey gobbled on roost, flew down and went silent until he made his way to the other ridge a mile and a half away… then he would begin gobbling again searching for a lonely hen. Sure enough, the last week of the season when most hunters had given up he proceeded to kill that tom on the ridge he had predicted. The bird carried an 11″ beard and 1 1/2″ spurs. Being a novice turkey hunter at the time, to say I was impressed would be an understatement!!!

in reply to: Blood Trails #10213Steve,
I agree with everything you said about your experience with single bevels. I have killed about 25 deer since switching to single bevel heads about 8 years ago and my results are right on par with yours. 90% of the deer go down within sight and some act as if they aren’t even hit. Blood trails (except for this deer because of all the blood loss through the mouth-nose area) usually are rather sparse. I butcher all my deer myself and the tissue damage and internal bleeding is unbelievable!! This doesn’t necessarily translate to good blood trails but it does help tremendously with quick humane kills.

in reply to: White Whitetail #10448David, very interesting. Piebald deer are pretty rare but 2 in the same group is very rare. About 10 years ago I saw a piebald in the woods I was hunting near my house. About a week later my wife told me she saw a “spotted white deer” on her way to work. As luck would have it I saw the same deer in the winter archery season…. Tasted the same as any other whitetail.

in reply to: PA Elk Hunt #10076I’ve entered in the drawing for 10 years. Wish they would use a preference point system like many states out west instead of the current system they use. Currently your name goes into the drawing for as many years as you have applied which still gives you very low odds. I’ll keep applying and maybe get lucky one of these years. There have been a few archery kills since the hunt started but as far as I know no one has done it with traditional gear. Steve, you are correct. The success rate is near 100% with about 98% being taken with rifles, 1.5% muzzleloaders and .5% archery.

in reply to: A good FOC arrow saved a botched shot! #10061That was a great story. Congratulations on a fine antelope. Proper tuning, heavy arrows, high FOC and sharp single bevel heads have many positive attributes on marginal hits as your experience proved once again. Great Job.
