I hunt them spring through fall and I use Judo points. I have never had an issue except when I miss. The Judo points are tough, cheap and don’t get lost very easily.

        Ireland,

I guess the big question is how large a town do you want to live in and do you have any special needs such as a medical conciderations? Coeur d’ Alene is the largest nothern city and is closer to Spokane than to Boise. The area did have a very large Nazi pressence but Morris Dees came in sued them and destroyed their networks. There are a few in Sandpoint left but for the most part they are gone. I have to agree with Homer though the Salmon region is one of my favorite ever. I am actually heading up to one of my favorite spots on the Salmon river to camp and fish for a week. The water is a beautiful blue/green color and crystal clear. Nice mountains but not nearly as brutal as the Mission mountains outside of Missoula Montana. Montana does a way better job of clearing the roads during the winter than Idaho but if you don’t mind being snowed in then its not a big worry.

My little brother lives in Montana but travels around for his work and been in Wyoming a number of times in the last couple years. He hates it there because of the devestation from the oil and gas companies. He didn’t like the wind either. Western Montana is beautiful and there is a lot of areas that would be great to retire in. Dave is right nothern Idaho is beautiful lots of elk, deer (mule and whitetail) bear and great turkey hunting. Have a great retirement.

I usually spot and stalk, but that is not a possiblity with the antelope down in the owyhee region I’m hunting in august. This fall I’m doing a deer hunt with my brother in Montana and the area he says needs a blind so this will be my first time hunting deer from a non-brush blind. Thanks for the tips!

              David,

You are right but a new thing has moved into our area its meth; and these sites are highly toxic and the people that run them are not nice and in many cases out of their minds from the drugs. I’ve bumped into two of them in the last three years, one populated one not. I left quietly and called the police. I refuse to let these people keep me from the beauty of these lands. I’m glad that you don’t have this issue and I hope you never do.

P.s. golf is a great way to stay inshape for hunting. after 18 holes and lugging my bag around my legs are nice and sore. Especially the way I play, always in the rough and water lol.

Camo is an avantage but I have to agree that its more about hiding from the two legged kind than animals. I hunt on a lot of public land and unfortunately there is a lot of drug dealers growing drugs on them and I like to make sure that i’m not seen by them. The better the break up of a siloute the better the camo, digital or gihili style suites are the best in this respect. When I hunt on private land I where Dickie’s and a t-shirt works great never have an issue with getting into range. I agree though commercialization has been pushing the lastest camo and its goal is profit not quality of product.

                  Ireland,

If you don’t like golf courses andski resorts stay away from the Bozeman area, great fly fishing but a lot of money and tourists. My dad and brother live there but don’t like it. The western part of the state is very nice, I’m partial to the Bigfork and Whitefish/Kilspell area. Lots of great deer elk and bear hunting and fishing. Beautiful area and the locals are great. There is some trendy stuff up there especially around Flathead lake. Its not bad and the area is gorgeous with lots of room so you can rome without worrying about the two legged critters.

                      Deadeye,

I don’t know where you are but I love to hunt year round. Here there are always squirles birds, rabbits etc… to hunt and they are much better at sharpening your shooting skills and its much more entertaining than static shooting. last time I was out we got one gopher but even after 5 hours it was a great time. I recomend doing other things that compliment your shooting if you can. Try tanning pelts (who cares what they are I started with mice lol), making your own arrow, etc… for me it keeps the motivation high. Good luck.

Thanks I found that out, but he has stuff all over including 3rivers archery, and it looks like nice stuff. The ones I quoted are generic sheaths cheap and functional for those that want to try it out. For me I want the best and am willing to pay for it, the second website I posted is the same way as Scott, although instead of archery he is black powder. I’m going to look at Scotts stuff cause I need an achery leatherworker so thanks for the info!

I grew up at the base of Glacier park in Montana and at 5 I had my first bow and my first gun at 7 (spent an entire summer mowing lawns to be able to buy it). We hunted to eat, along with a chickens and turkeys that we raised and a large garden that is what we had. We did not get Mcdonalds when I was a child, and I didn’t taste beef till I was almost 6. Having been all over this earth I find that everyone outside of the commercialized hunting scene have a spiritual connection to hunting and consuming animals. My better halve is Buddhist, and I hunt with Muslims. We all give thanks for the life of the animal but also everytime we consume the animal. We respct each others traditions and never take offence to how another says Thank you. Of all the years and hard miles I have traveled, I have come to find myself through hunting and the outdoors sharing food and life with the most wonderful people and for that I am eternally grateful.

trackofthewolf.com has three general horisontal sheaths from $10-28. Also I buy a lot of my leathers from The Leatherman website is blackpowderbags.com. He does custom orders so if you have a knife you want a sheath for send the dementions and he’ll make if for you. I have a lot of his leather products and they are the best i’ve seen. Supple and very strong with great stiching that despite my abuse has yet to fray or seperate. I know of several of his items that are right now on their second and third tours in Iraq and still going strong. I admit to my bias but I am also loyal to small buisnesses and high quality. Let me know what you decide on I’m always looking for new leather lol its my addiction.

Nice work love the knife looks like its as sweet as sugar. Tragic that such a craftsman passed on. I prefer a horizontal sheath on the hip to the neck or traditional vertical ones. I do have a knife on the strap of my possibility bag though and love it. The whole neck safety thing is a lot like the Small of the Back holster thing (SOB). That is where the argument is that is you fall you’ll break your back. Is there a single case of it happening? Probably but the chances are of it happening are less than you winning $300 million on the next lottery drawing. The concealed weapon issue is a tricky one, here in Idaho a pocket knife is a concealed weapon if the cops want to push it, because of the way the law is written. They rarely do this especially if you let them know you have the knife. It does make sense to check local laws.

                                Smithhammer,

I agree with you 100% and I knew exactly what you where saying. The mismanagement of public lands in Idaho is something I personally know first hand as being atrocious and we teach it in hunters ed now. The mismanagement is quickly traced backed to corporate farms, and its sad. Dr. Lowie has documented the extreme influence of the agricultural lobby on the U.S. government since the 1930’s. I feel that it’s getting to the point that its either agro-coporate farms or complete privatization that we are now seeing of land. It tears my heart out.

                                  Thorr40,

Branch MOS? I’m Army 21B and E, my boys are in Iraq but I support all vets if you need anything let me know. I’m Left eye dominate but only partially right handed (long story). I shot compound right handed and used extended pins. I shot extremely accurate this way. I did not like it, and moved to traditional archery. I use both eyes and shoot instinctively. As a military person I’m guessing you have been exposed to these techniques as well when shooting your side-arm/rifle. I’ve was out shot once on the cqc range once 48-49 and he was using an ACOG sight I had irons, and never on any of the pistol ranges. I credit my skills with instinctive shooting (tons of it) with my shotgun and bow; eventually I put down my shotgun and hunted birds only with my bow. Its a deteriorating skill though and lack of constant practice your accuracy falls dramatically, since you have not mechanical crutch. Look forward to hearing how your daughters do.
