I use some 5/8″ doweling and cord to make mine and I carry two. If it’s a buck I put one around each antler or if a doe put both around the neck. That way I have one in each hand and can vary how I’m pulling on them when I’m dragging. Kinda hard to explain but it makes life easier I promise.
I have one of the straps that you sling across your chest but that thing was attached to me too well when my buck went sliding sideways down a slope. Kinda like a Nantucket sleigh ride it was for a bit. Glad it “weren’t no 100′ cliff”:)
Figure I’ll give that to someone I don’t like one of these days. ๐
Steve, glad you brought this up. I’ve been intending to to do so, just haven’t got around to it.
in reply to: Now that it's over #60280I would love to hunt some quail but in our drought conditions I will not. I saw more birds this year than in the last couple but not enough for me to go after them.
Where I used to see several large coveys, I’ve seen two with 4-10 birds. Better though than the one or two birds I was seeing for a couple of years. So maybe some rain this spring and let them multiply.
So I’ll be occasionally trying to call some coyotes and trying to convert some pigs from nocturnal to diurnal.
Good luck to me eh:?
Problem there is the hogs retreat into the river bottom at daytime and roam at night to feed and the river bottom is out of bounds to me. Otherwise I would love to oozing around in the salt cedar jungle spot and stalking.
Maybe I need to get a hog squealer and give it a try.
Rabbits? The drought has taken it’s toll on them too so those that would have been so unfortunate for me to hit with an arrow are also free to reproduce.
Like said, lots to do and around here we hope it rains/snows.

Going in for hernia surgery Thursday AM at some ungodly hour of the AM… (for me being retired) so we’ll see how that goes living alone.
I’m feeling officially ‘old’ right about now!
Don’t have and can’t afford an ATV, but while I’m sure Dave P has a ton of honest experiences to support his angst over ALL of EM… I can sometimes see their place if used responsibly!
Of course, not that ugly monstrosity he posted up… LOL:D
I think more like when t-rex was running around for y’all.
I guess y’all know y’all making me feel kinda bad but I do leave a little footprint and I can haul my mini camp too.
in reply to: best ATV ever? #58244Bet you’d have to sell a couple of books to buy that thing.:D
Does it have power assist steps to help get your old a** in and out of it?
in reply to: It's getting cold… #57955I assume ice fishing be the choice of the day. ๐
That’s cold!!!
And hey, let’s see how see how Seattle can match up with Green Bay. :D:)
I changed my hunting stuff to try to chase some coyotes, maybe better said to try to call some coyotes to me since I can’t run as fast as I used to.:D
Maybe a pig will show but pictures I have are all at night. I’m not into sitting up all night with a flashlight waiting for a pig to show.:D One might catch me sleeping and make a mess of this old goat!!
Oh yeah and P.S. I’ve never been too productive at collecting quail with a flu flu and a judo point but that don’t mean I don’t try. No fear of hitting one for sure unless one flies the wrong way.

AND binoculars?!? That’s cheating!!!

Binos are for bird watching! ๐
In case a rare NJ Bikini Snowbird come slicking through the trees right? ๐ Worthy of a good pair of binos I hear tell.
in reply to: NJ Winter Bow #56904Dave, I believe they offer several thickness of wool for more extreme temps.
Alex, that’s a cool place, pun intended. ๐
Glad you enjoyed.
in reply to: What ya got goin? #56231in reply to: Last PA bow hunt #55929One thing about it, I need no tub for my enjoyments, their ain’t one big enough for them and they don’t get lost.
I’ll put all my miseries in one of those blue tubs, put a lid on and lose it. No sense in keeping them around.
Like my tag line says……….
in reply to: Last PA bow hunt #55877Good idea David. Now instead of losing one or two things, I can lose a whole dang box.
Archery catalog here I come. :D:D
Doc knows I have turkeys to chase this spring. Ha:wink:
in reply to: Last PA bow hunt #55858Glad you enjoyed and stayed warm.
My season was great even if unproductive with my bow. Being out is the thing. Do have meat in the freezer though. That’s always a good thing.
And yep on next season, I’m already cleaning up and reorganizing for next fall. Of course by then there’ll be a whole bunch of “Where in the *&$# did I put that” going on. ๐ But that’s part of the fun. After nearly 70 years I’m really good at misplacing items. ๐
in reply to: What ya got goin? #54120in reply to: Tapered Shaft Question #52553I don’t remember the spine of some cedar arrows I had years ago but I do know they were 23/64 shafts cause at that time that’s all I used, actually they were the most common way back then.
These shafts were maybe 7-8#’s too stiff so I tapered them down to 11/32. I’m thinking that dropped the spine maybe a pound or so. So then I decided to barrel taper them and see what happened. I tapered the fronts down to 11/32 also. Probably 9″ both ends as that’s what I always do.
As I recall after all that work I maybe got the spine down 3 #’s.
But like Steve pointed out, everything sat differently on my spine tester so who knows about the accuracy of my experience.
Seems though if you zero the tester it ought be OK. ???
Good thing from that though was I built my tapering sanding tool and still use it, not only for tapering but for sanding arrows before putting a finish on them.
in reply to: NJ Winter Bow #50785Page 85 in the Oct/Nov 2014 of the TBM mag has information on how to build a device for running target practice.
So maybe the ethical part of taking running shots is knowing the difference of whether you can do it or not and not doing so if you can’t.
in reply to: NJ Winter Bow #50721Just goes to show that people do different things in different places and maybe think a little different than others.
Have fun guys.
