in reply to: Re-Thinking old Thoughts on Woodies #29064
Thanks Robin.. I just knocked a nock off on a “planned shot” that hit the fence. 😀
I’ll put some white paint on it, let dry, re-nock and see if I can hit the fence again.
in reply to: Re-Thinking old Thoughts on Woodies #29033Steve, I’ve tried a lot of different colored feathers over the years and I’ve settled on either white, orange or chartreuse.
Some colors that show out in the bright sun disappear when you shoot into a dark background.
Red, pink for example. Shoot those into a black target in the shade or dim light and I lose them.
Yellow works pretty good too and surprisingly blue seems to work.
I saw a color visibility study once, way to many years ago, the said blue had the highest visibility rating as a lure sank into deep water. They also showed it in the forest showing up. But deer it’s said can see blue. Yeah but they see white apparently cause white is alarm for whitetails.
To make all that short, our need to see the arrow flight is more important than what deer see. You move at the wrong time and it matters not what color you have.
We see colors differently between us also.
All said and done for visibility, chartreuse is easiest for me to see (and find).
Oh yeah, just gotta say I’m glad you’re liking the woodies. I just keep on going back to them.
in reply to: I think a Dingo ate my Baby! #2901410-4 on that. I still have problems with my left hand that got tore up 3 yrs. by a broken deer antler on the deer I worked so feverishly and so late to get out because of the very reason, coyotes.
I was far from my truck, I knew where he was but I also new if I waited til daylight to fetch him the coyotes would eat him.
It wasn’t quite the same deal as yours, I had him but I was 1 1/2 miles from my truck and that’s far for a 200#? dead haul (104# of butchered meat so big enough deer. Too big for ‘yote midnight snack).
Decided though the next time if it happens I’ll get help. Or I’ll hunt that part of the world in the morning. That was a long trip with a gaping wound.
in reply to: I think a Dingo ate my Baby! #28961That’s a shame Steve that you’re animal was lost that way.
I know where you’re coming from on the coyote deal. When I go out on my lease early in the morning there’s coyotes howling and yapping all over the place.
When I use my wounded rabbit call to imitate a fawn bleat I never know if it’ll be mule deer does or coyotes come to check it out (you ever seen how quick a coyote can go from going this away to going that away when it figures out you ain’t no rabbit?).
Once again, sorry about your loss but like you said, nothing wasted to momma nature.
Hope you don’t dream too much about not taking two more steps:roll:
in reply to: Don't Do This! #26004Whew uh Scott. Sometimes we’re living right, or at least living lucky.
My son and I weren’t that lucky once. He came in later than me, I had my stuff all stowed, he said be “in in a minute dad, gotta tinkle”.
He got in shortly and I backed out and felt a little bump and heard a noise. My boy turned as white as a sheet and said “Daddy I laid my bow on the ground behind the tire and forgot”.
Lesson learned for the two of us………
Glad you were fortunate…
in reply to: Another Article #17893More and more I find this quote to be a good way of thinking and wish more of the world would think about it.
“Give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticize others”. >Christian D. Larson
Perhaps then we would have an open enough mind to understand that all is not what it seems.
Especially when it comes from the press.
Like the old adage, “Believe half of what you see and none of what you hear”, says a lot……
P.S. I totally sympathize with those that might get eaten to have no sympathy towards those that would do the eating.
in reply to: Another Article #17841Thanks for posting that. That goes right along with what I’ve tried to say.
“We Zimbabweans are left shaking our heads, wondering why Americans care more about African animals than about African people.”
in reply to: Lets go Moose Hunting #14321Steve a couple of 9 foot…..folks…….might be kinda handy when it comes to hauling a moose out of the woods. 😀
in reply to: White Whitetail #9157That piebald is cool. I’ve seen a few pictures of them before.
I’m thinking one of the guys on my lease had a pic of one a few years back.
Cool to see David, very rare methinks.
Good picture.
in reply to: Trail camera question #60678Alex, I always use some “de-scenting” 😀 procedures as I check and fiddle with my cameras.
I at least spay with “de-scenting” spray on me and spray the camera area down some when I leave.
It’s been three weeks since I checked mine and I hope to get where I can go check them this week.
Archery opens here Oct. 4th. :D:D:D:D
in reply to: Bottoms Up for more shooting! #58902I think with what was going on with me today that I need to work on being sneaky more than shooting so I can get close enough to poke a deer with a sharp broadhead with plenty of EFOC. 😡
Guess you can guess I had a bad shooting day. Otherwise OK. Me and another feller set up some 3D targets at the range and had the Boy Scouts out. 39 boys shooting.
Entertaining at the least:D.
This is the 4th year I’ve done this and we’ve gained from 15 to nearly 40.
There is hope!!!!!!!!
Cheers! Bottoms up…………….
in reply to: Bottoms Up for more shooting! #58803Hey David, I’m going through a slump right now so I’d be best off buying two, to get 6×8. That’d make my fence and neighbors feel a bit more secure. 🙄
