in reply to: Good Compass #127448

I know this ain’t about buying  or a recommendation or maybe the proper use of a compass but last year I ventured into an area on my lease I’m not too familiar with. I was down in the river bottom, heavy foliage, thick salt cedars and a heavy fog and drizzle rolled in.  I had virtually no visual clue of direction more than 10 yds or so.

Where I mostly hunt I know the terrain well and know that uphill will get me to somewhere familiar.

In the river bottom I knew if I went north I’d hit a road that’d get me back to my truck but the foliage was so dense and the fog so thick I had no clue of north. I didn’t really go find the river but woulda had I deemed necessary but I thought of my phone.

You’d maybe think no big deal but 13000 acres is a lot of country. when you’re wondering where the hell am I.

I was really in no danger but a few years back a feller got turned around in the same  kinda country only west of us 40-50 miles on the Lake Meredith Federal Rec area, public land.  He died of exposure so it’s possible.

Anyway, back to the subject on hand, the compass feature on my phone pointed out north to me and I let it guide me to the road and all was cool.

Kinda literally cool, the fog and drizzle weren’t expected and I got soaked.

The compass feature on a smartphone  might be a big help sometime or another…  I know batteries and such may be dead on phone, all kinds of problems may exist’ but the phone is always a possibility to line one out.

in reply to: Cock Feather In #126659

Since the proverbial question off what came first, the hen feather or the shaft  feather, the hen wants to know if the feathers are shafted or are the shafts feathered?

The hen has been shafted out of a job it seems😏

Shooting my old Shakespeare all glass bow. I think it’s a Hunter. There’s some script still on the limbs and “Hunter” is an educated guess from what is left in that area of the limb.

I researched and they quit putting leather wrapped handles on them in 1961 so it’s at least a 1960 model at the latest.

            55# and is surprisingly smooth.

For what little it may be of use David, I’ve found that a stiffer glove tends to hang a tad more on my middle finger and it is pulled more upon release.

                Just me sayin!

Also it seems to help me a lot when I keep my middle finger to myself.

I agree with Steve on making sure you don’t over bow yourself.

You might want to to look at some Samick bows.  They’re really pretty nice and there are models like the Sage  that shoot quite well and won’t break the bank. I have a 45# Sage and enjoy it whenever I decide to shoot a recurve just for grins.  I be mostly a longbow guy.

With the take down models of recurves you can usually buy some higher weight limbs as you progress or if you get old like me you can get lesser weight limbs as you regress. :-))

Just don’t get flustered and just have fun.

Seems like a lot of advice any more complicates the fun of shooting stick and string.

Just shoot and remember to laugh at yourself.

Sounds like a great deal, lesson from John Schulz.  I’d probably come home with a bunch of knots on my head from learning things the hard way.  😀

The arrows I just made are for the new composite bow I won in a raffle at the Memphis TBOT shoot. I was smiled upon to win the bow for sure. Lonnie Dye makes a very, very good composite bow. They’re in high demand.

It’s 39# at 27 1/2″.  Being a 70″ long bow it casts arrows so beautifully it’s almost an insult to it when I do one of my boo boo short draws.

It’s been awhile since I built some delicate little 5/16″shafts. My big old hands have a tendency to overpower the little guys. :-))

The bow shoots some of my heavier and stiffer shafts well but I’m wanting to experiment with (I’m ducking) some lighter and speedier shafts.

Enjoy your trip to Montana and learn well.

Hey Steve, if we all carried one arrow Robin Hood would never have existed?

Typical R2 dozen now, any number shy of twelve.

My new Lonnie Dye composite bow, my new (11 now) dz arrows, a new string  I built for it.

I would feel really special could I do that on demand instead of just blind ? luck?…

Just thinking that since you’ve gone up in so much bow weight you may be having more problems of getting to your anchor than you think.  Shooting left for a right handed person is also a sign of too stiff of a spined arrow and short drawing stiffens spine. :-((..  I know……………….. :-((

                        That’s a fine bow you’re shooting………..

                        Just an added thought.

                        Good luck with it.

                                Nice at the ranch today.

Yuccas are soon to be really bloomed out despite we had a freeze here last night. Probably the last one????
