What it’s all about when it comes down to it. Y’all are doing great.
in reply to: knock fitting to string #61818Reese Field was the mentor of many here in the panhandle, teacher of the makers of both Great Plains and Yellowjacket Longbows, a dear friend to my wife and I and teacher to me, put the same thing in not so eloquent words but saying same, “Shootin a longbow is simple but nobody said it was easy”. That has stuck with me for many, many years.

I agree. Back in another lifetime when I was building hi-lines the great big poles (big around, height not a problem) got passed on to the jr. guys. I learned early on that getting up a big around pole is way easier than coming down it. You could extend your safety length and get started and in awhile when you could get a handle on the pole, get the safety out of the way and go. Reversing that don’t work for bueno****. Find a smaller tree.
in reply to: knock fitting to string #61790Hey Doc, I make my own strings and I too pre-stretch only I have a rig I made using chains and a turnbuckle. Think it was on here once upon a time. I know for my strings of various materials and #’s of strands I’m using as to how many strands of synthetic sinew to use under my serving in order to fit my nocks. I serve the sinew for about an inch on either side of where the nockset will be (so my bow square will not be going on string cockeyed) and then serve normally over that.. I have a happy medium of “snugness”, snugger for ‘classic’ nocks than for the nocks on carbon arrows. The throat on the carbon nocks allows the arrow to move up and down on the string and I also discovered that the second nock set under is a cure for that problem. Works for me. Hope this is as clear as mud.
I only make strings for 2-3 friends and they know how to and prefer to serve the string themselves so that takes a chore away from me. The third “don’t know nothin’ ” so I just go to his place and set it up for him. Easier than doing it twice.

in reply to: Stumpin/Killin in the South #61770I’m not offended either. They’re times when whoever strikes first lives longest and I prefer that living longest part to be me and mine. When a snake’s close enough to me to startle me, it’s at risk. Sometimes thinking about reacting ain’t gonna cut it. But generally just cause it’s a snake or coyote or whatever it don’t have to die, just depends on what kind a pickle we we get into.
I still have no use for rattlers. I grew up with them and I still don’t like the **** things.

28″ draw, ha! Pause before release, ha! After all these years shooting I’m surprised I hit what I do. Solid bow arm. Wat dat?
Actually not that bad but you don’t wanna see:D:D.
I have greatly improved since I watched me. Nice to know what others won’t tell. Busted ego a good thing maybe.
in reply to: attaching glue on broadheads #58140Very good. Wonderful to see the learning curve working. I love to watch any arrow hitting where I planned but there’s something special about a wood arrow with a broadhead that’s doing so. My part done well, yours also!
in reply to: goose'n the longbow #58134Well done!!!!!!! That just pleases the fire outta me. I like it. :D:D
in reply to: What ya got goin? #57126Working on some new shafts, tapered cedar from Braveheart. Nice! Thinkin on those guys out chasin and I gotta wait til the 28th. Could chase doves but they’re smarter than my arrows.:D Too hot for pigs in daytime.
Go out later this week and do some scouting, stumping and may have to take bang, bang. Dove breasts good with jalapeno stuffed inside and grilled. Can’t even imagine how good a bow shot dove would taste!!!:lol:
That ol’hacksaw was my dad’s, so it’s older than most of us. Even me and David!
in reply to: Samick 62'' Sage #53708I bought a Samick Sage about 6 months ago and I was surprised. It shoots really well. It puts arrows where I point it, it’s quiet. That’s all I can ask. I haven’t any bow that cost way more that does any better than that. I built a fastflite string for it and it’s doing great. It’s what I put the one arrow quiver on in the pic in the “bow quivers” thread. Life expectancy???????????? Time will tell::wink::wink::wink:
in reply to: A first harvest… #53065That makes us all proud. Congratulations!!!
