in reply to: Warm Weather Whitetails #40957
It has cooled down for a few days, mid 30’s at night. I went out today and saw several whitetail does early and a 3 buck gang of muley bucks. A small 4×4, a forky, and a spike. Seems they outsmarted me by bedding on a north slope with south wind at their backs and a clear view forever. Clever devils! I elected to try another day rather than spook them into the next county. The area they’re in is best hunted with a north wind and we have one coming Friday 😛

After my experience last year of shooting late, finding and recovering my mule deer buck in total darkness other than my flashlight and “racking” my bow hand up in the process, by the way that I’m still paying for (physically), I’m having second thoughts big time about late evening shooting. I imagine it’ll be this year, like Duncan says, just sitting and watching the changing of the guard. Sometimes though, mule deer just start popping out of the woodwork about 30-45 minutes before dark.
“Better not Ralphie boy!!! Never have had an easy time of it with late shot deer. Gettin’ old you know old buddy!”
My hand is so sensitive to cold now after it’s injury. Yuck!
in reply to: The 2013 Season Bulletin Board #37040Finally got free today (retired don’t mean all free days by any means 😀 ). Quite often muleys bury up in these mesquites in the shade when it’s hot but……nary a track. I oozed all over this about mile square area, lots of little divets, gullies hidey holes but nada. At least I know to leave that alone for awhile.
At least 3 under still seems to be working for me, always a stump buck
around somewhere.
After 90* plus with 25-35 mph winds coming off the Sahara:D, nuff was enuff. Tomorrow, 1st real blue norther so it’ll feel like wind coming from N. pole. Sunday morn, ha!. 34*. That’ll gett’em up and about methinks.
in reply to: Warm Weather Whitetails #34473I know what you mean. it’s been near 90* here all week. Cold front gonna blast through Friday night and Saturday so Sunday we going. Would go earlier but I have no desire to hunt in 40-50 mph winds. Some say it’s doable but when there is no forest to block the wind…………….. 😀
I was out a couple of days ago and nada moving in the hot weather. Cool down should help.
in reply to: Tradgang closing free classifieds… #33010:D:D Me too all!!!!
in reply to: Tradgang closing free classifieds… #32858“That being said – Webmom – if there’s any links you have that would allow us to donate to the site, I’m sure there are members out there who care enough to donate a few dollars now so that we can avoid anything like what’s happening at tradgang happening here.”
I would do so also!!!!!!!!!!! This is the only outdoor related website that I give a flip about. We here strive to be as good as we can be but we don’t bear an attitude of better than thou! Cannot be said of the others.
in reply to: Paleo Site #31142I happen to hunt a ranch that’s within 20 miles of the Alibates Flint Quarry. There’s all kinds of goodies around like the metates in another thread. Lots of broken artifacts and such too. I love finding ancient tools and trying to figure out what for and how they were used. Stumping on the ranch, !0,000 acres bordering the Canadian River and in the breaks on either side, and looking for goodies makes a fun day.
It’s also amazing how many “modern” artifacts I find leftover from the oil boom days (the ranch is a hop, skip and jump from Borger, Tx., one of the rougher boom towns back in the day). How many years have beeni weenis been around? I did find an old Dr. Pepper 10-2-4 bottle one day.
in reply to: Practicing the "Cold Shot" #29921That’s why shoot close!!!!!!!!!!! 😀 Tell me about it. Woulda traded for smaller when I retired but I only wear the pants when she lets me.:lol:
Improves concentration for sure:P
in reply to: Practicing the "Cold Shot" #29508in reply to: Practicing the "Cold Shot" #28777Jim, I been fighting target panic for a couple of years. I bought a 40# recurve at a tourney a couple of weeks ago to try to help with my problem and was encouraged to try 3 under. I have a couple of friends shooting really, really well and they have been coached by some of the big boys. The thinking was to make my pea brain work on something different. It was strange at first but I shot the best score on a 30 target course than I’ve done in a long time. Now it seems to be coming natural. I have theory and I’ll PM you on that. I’m an old dog but I ain’t afraid of new tricks. Don’t like blunts coming my way either :D:D so…………….
in reply to: Ring Finger #28706That would really smart but not be.:lol:
in reply to: Practicing the "Cold Shot" #28542Yeah, and your dog probably even used to like you! 😆
I’m trying to get used to 3 under so my cold shot is sometimes a little dumb but I’m getting there. Right now 15 yds. and less be OK. I hunt where 15 yds. may be quite the miracle if that close happens. 25 and under probably great. Until I get more accustomed to 3 under I better be some smarter and sneakier.
