Looked that up. Nasty little buggers are they not.

Not only is swimming and kayaking “adventurous” in Australia, bet stumping can get you bit or stung by something unpleasant.

I think that’s cool what you’re getting to do Jim. So many things I’ve seen in my lifetime the next generations will not see. The same as you’re getting to do and see.

Doc, we wizened up quickly. We started to leave a present in the bags for when those fellers returned but we figured our luck would run poorly if a ranger came by and got prickly about litter, especially a bit odorous litter.:(I’m thinking plenty of cow piles around, what you thinking?) 🙄

We used to use that concept when crossing the Canadian River on the Lake Meredith National Rec Area. The river during most of the hunting season is normally wade-able. It’s a sandy bottom so we waded in stocking feet and plastic trash bags. We’d then leave our bags under a rock to use upon our return (the Feds dictated where we could cross). It worked well for years until some bodies on their return trip thought we had a good idea and left our bags on the other side of the river. To add insult to injury, right in plain sight and weighted down with rocks just like they’d found them. Just wrong side. Bet they found that to be humorous. After that we either hid our bags well or carried them with us.

“From a PR point of view, the best approach may simply be to let the deer eat people’s flowers and lawns so they’ll understand that there’s more to this than Bambi.” Don

Regarding this statement Don, I have a dear (no pun intended) friend that he and his wife moved into a development in the canyons south of Amarillo where mule deer abound. At first they, along with many others in the area, were upset that all they planted was eaten. The development organization had many meetings searching for solutions to the deer population. Controlled hunts were dismissed early on, I think the reasons can be figured out easily, they contacted the big ranches in the area about trapping deer and relocating such. Mule deer are plentiful enough in the panhandle that takers were not found. It is an expensive progress anyway. They even plotted sterilization procedures. After a few years time nothing has changed with the deer, they still eat what they want but the people have mellowed. Maybe not all happy, but not as vocal. As a matter of fact, my buddy sends me some nice pictures of deer doing their deer things. He told me today that one of the old does that’s a “buddy” of his let her young’n suckle her within a couple of feet of him today. “Change” is good in there mindset.

This particular area is roomy and has open ranch land surrounding it so the deer can be mobile, whereas a lot of more urban areas have a more contained environment and I’m sure that complicates the problem more so.

Mike that’s terrible. You know if they were just hungry and needed food they’d have taken all. ***holes. When I was traveling to Denver City, Tx. way early one Monday morning, that is sandhill country around Morton and Plains, and until a few years ago it was totally unknown about for the monster mule deer bucks in the area, 30+”, I passed a deer down on the side of the road. Curious I turned round to check it thinking maybe road kill. Sure enough, shot from the road and the antlers were sawed off at the base. 2 1/2″ or so across. Must have been an outstanding deer. No meat taken. Amateurs too I’m thinking by how they took his antlers. ***holes too.

Paleo, I too have a dislike, on the opposite end of the spectrum, and that’s when bucks are referred to as “shooters”. What happened to “that’s a good buck” or “nice deer” or “boy he’s a good’n” or even “I think I’ll take him”. Calling a buck a “shooter” just shows no respect for the animal to me. It only reflects the “trophy” aspect of hunting, not the “hunting” aspect of hunting. IMHO

In this part of the world buffalo “plops” might have helped. Can’t put on a wolf skin to sneak around in nowadays either, might get shot or jailed.

Let’s see, got busted twice 1 1/2 hours before daylight trying to get where I wanted to be. Got there and got pinned down by a wt doe. Waited her out, thought she was out of area, busted again. Went snooping in next draw north, nothing, headed more north towards river, discovered glasses missing, damn, back to 1st draw. Found little wt buck same place doe was, pinned down again, waited him out, found glasses, then back north again. Ha, 52 turkeys but no way to outsmart 104 turkey eyeballs. Gonna take pic, camera I’ve been fixing for years now way bad ,. Lens stuck half in/out, out/in? Anyway tapping no longer worked (researched once, only known cure). Sharp blow solved the problem, pulled SD card and gonna get new camera tomorrow. Archaeologist have something to wonder about story of item’s demise someday when they find it at bottom of rock pile. Wind up now, 35-40 mph + temp up from 32 to now 65 deg., I’m cooking in my longjohn bottoms so time to go truck, drink coffee, spill coffee in lap, decide best forget hunting today, go home take nap… Go back Thursday before blue norther hits us.

Sad. It seems no matter how far from the roads I get I find artifacts like this. If mankind survives for awhile future archaeologists will have plenty to ponder over from our time on earth.

Best thing I can do around here it to shuffle my feet around in some “dry” (emphasis on the “dry”):D cow piles, go to one of the dirt roads, stir up the dust then hunt into the wind. It has been mostly so warm that I don’t believe any kind of scent killer would overcome my stink anyway so might as well try to smell like a dirty old black cow. Dry as it is maybe they’ll associate all the noise I’m making with the cow:?:?

I believe a deer’s sense of smell is liken to what I read about a dog’s, you and I smell the stew, the dog smells all 21 of the seasonings in it.
