in reply to: Sharpening single bevel heads ? #28700
I just talked with Ron at KME sharpeners. Like some of you, I was having trouble getting my single bevel broadheads razor sharp. I wonder now if that is the reason I had some poor penetration shots. Ron walked me through the process (literally waited on the phone as I did each step), and now my arm is missing a patch of hair! Thank you Ron, I was almost ready to give up on single bevels and go back to double. I hope soon I’ll be able to test the new edge out.

in reply to: Your most memorable misses…. #43060This will be fun and informative to follow. This past season I only let one arrow fly and it did its job. However, I almost released another arrow but didn’t and I kind of consider that a “missed opportunity”: Sneaking through a bedding area a legal fork buck stood up from his bed, 10 yards above me, broadside, but with a bush blocking his vitals. I had an arrow nocked, waiting. After 30 seconds (more like an eternity:lol:)he walked off without presenting a clean shot. That was the closest I got to a legal buck with my bow this year.
I’ll be going hog hunting in a couple weeks, so I hope to not miss another one of those!

Good luck with the petition! How many signatures did you get?
Steve- I didn’t need to get any signatures, but I had to fill out the application, dot the i’s and cross the t’s correctly, and provide information for the reasons I want the law changed. If any of those aspects were answered incorrectly or insufficiently then it would rejected immediately. So at least the petition made it to the meeting minutes and will be discussed.
in reply to: Open stance or conventional ? #26714I like what everyone had been saying about this topic. I was always aware of, but painfully experienced firsthand last year, that I need to practice shooting from really odd positions; especially if I plan on stalking to hunt. When I set up an ambush I sit so that I can shoot in a comfortable and regular shooting form. But while stalking I may be, have been, in a really odd position when the shot is presented (Grumps: Only crawl under fences when there are no deer around…).
I currently adhere to Ashby’s shoot from all kinds of angles and positions and distances. At some point in this practice I am sure I find myself in the “open stance” position. I had never thought about the reasons Asbell gave for shooting that form. I like what he says about it, and I’ll pay more attention to it in my practice.
Something that I started to notice (for me) was that I didn’t shoot my broadheads enough. I had a variety of excuses: I did not want to miss the target and break an arrow, didn’t want to have to sharpen them often, I have to pull each arrow after shooting cause if I hit another arrow with a broadhead that arrow is done. Now I shoot my broadheads and practice with them. Makes me more confident with the arrow I will hunt with.
in reply to: Personal conservation #53495You folks that can actually choose what to shoot are lucky. I live in a buck only state, and one antler has to be forking, which usually means they are 2+ years old (sometimes yearlings have a fork). And I only get 2 buck tags each year. So that pretty much sets my limits (if I could even manage to get that close to 2 legal bucks with a clean shot and not miss each year…) The state fish & game agency tried to institute an antlerless hunt about 50 years ago in a select few zones. At the end of the season the biologists’ view point was that the number of does killed was acceptable, BUT the public’s viewpoint was that too many does were killed. After lots of complaining politics took over. Currently, the only game and fish law a County can overrule is: antlers hunts 😳 This fall I submitted a petition to the CA Fish & Game Commission to address 2 issues. First, that our buck only harvest has skewed sex ratios and that we should institute an antlerless deer tag. Second, to create a primitive or traditional archery season, because he spirit of the archery season is eroding; it is quite common for compound hunters to shoot in excess of 60 yards at game out here, and with the encroaching crossbow threat we need to firmly secure traditional archery hunting.
We’ll see what they say. I received a letter from them that they will at least dress my petition in their next meeting in February.

A day spent in the woods (or a night, or at the ocean, or on a river) is far more enjoyable than anything else I could be doing.

The bucks are just out of sight, peeking between the branches, laughing at you. Happens to me all of the time.
Seen a lot of scrapes, does, and bucks that are too far away, and always hear snickers in the distance.
Grumpy,
Am I to understand that your eyes and ears are good enough to see the bucks peeking through bushes and hear them laughing at you!!!
