in reply to: Book Rec for black bear hunters/lovers #39627
Etter, good points. Although I’ve not noticed scarring on males before, I’ll have to look for that.
I was emailing with a biologist in B.C. using remote cameras to monitor grizzlies. She ID sex of bears on camera, and said adult males were broader in the shoulders, adult females wider in the rear quarters, and subadult males resembling females.
You noticed anything like that in the field?

in reply to: Southwest DIY Javelina Hunts? #22946I was looking at the AZ regulations and seems like all the Javelina hunts are for Juniors only. There is a draw for Spring javelina hunts but no information about the season, quotas, or junior/adult.
I would also be interested in camping out for a hunt like this. Something to extend the season into the winter.
in reply to: wood v. carbon #19720Thanks Ed, yes that does help. So if your arrow is going to break then you want a hardwood shaft because it is stronger than carbon and arrow integrity is #1. But if the arrow doesn’t break then the other penetration enhancing factors (which can be achieved better with carbon) should be used.
in reply to: trail cameras #16162I think trail cameras have a place in research and observation (especially remote videos). They allow us to watch behaviors undisturbed at multiple locations. For example, how many bears were you able to watch rubbing a tree last year? During the hunting season I watch 1 bear rub a tree. But, I had 6 trail cameras set to take videos on rub trees and captured 28 videos of bears rubbing. These videos weren’t placed so I could hunt better, but so I could learn more about the animal.
Now, I agree with you Don that it would take more skill to photograph or video the behavior in person, and the quality of the end product would be better. But for volume and the ability to then compare across sexes or age classes, its tough to beat trail cams.

in reply to: Traditional archery clubs? #15103Oh I didn’t realize that wasn’t happening anymore, too bad.
in reply to: Traditional archery clubs? #14358Hey Codger even though we’re in the same state I’m still 6 hours north of you. But we have the Humboldt Archers club based out of Eureka. Then there is the California Bowmen Hunters/State Archery Association you could check out to get started. There’s a big traditional shoot near Santa Rosa and another 3D shoot near Redding each year.

in reply to: Book Rec for black bear hunters/lovers #13469That’s cool!
So here’s a question since you’ve been able to watch so many bears: When you see a bear, what do you look at to identify its sex and age?
in reply to: Man Eaters of Kumaon #13359Yep, used on amazon. Might as well pick it up and Clay’s book at the same time. Books are how I go into debt…
