Great info fellas. I, as well, have heard about someone killing an elk with a head on shot through the brisket, but like you guys say, there’s a lot of room for error. I was gun hunting hogs and shot an “eatin’ boar hog” (as the locals called it). My buddy ran up and grabbed him at the shot, and holding him down he put his knife into the pigs neck and sawed back and forth to cut the artery and vein. We thought he was finished and went to get the truck. When we returned he was still alive…! Finished him quickly with .22 to head, but I then realized how much muscle protected the boars neck. It was incredible.

paleo, I’d hate to have to listen to that, its hard enough to hear the bear moan.

      What’s the “Texas heart shot”?

My friend works as a bowtech in a big sporting goods store here. The archery industry sends catalogs to sellers, not just to push new products but also to discuss new concepts. Well, a recent catalog had a multi page article addressing Dr. Ashby’s research and how it can benefit the bowhunting community. So we are making some head way.

            Hey Fellas,

Archery season opened here on Saturday. Good thing is I can hunt on the coast. Which means the weather could be foggy, windy, and in the 50’s. Makes for colder weather than inland for sure. As Mark Twain said, “The coldest winter I ever spent was summer in California.”

I’m not quite sure, but I think part of the reason the seasons are early here is because when the snows starts the deer move down, and often end up on private land in the valley bottoms. Old timers tell me about when it would rain/snow all rifle season and the deer would be migrating out of the high country. But now it doesn’t rain until the season is over so the deer are harder to get to. I think part of having the seasons earlier is so folks could get into and enjoy the backcountry as well.

Anyway, I enjoy the early season. Its a great excuse to go out and watch some animals and maybe even try and sneak up on one. Then you can put together some late hunts in another state and hunt almost half the year!

              Hey thanks fellas!

My favorite page is 73, with the photo of the handmade canoe, deer, and quiver by D. Cote.

Great bear! I really like those reddish spots above his eyes. Way to get close!

And regarding the original posting, I think lighted nocks, along with most new technologies, creates a situation where a hunter might take a marginal shot because having the lighted nock gives a false sense of security that you will be able to see the arrow in poor light.

I’m not familiar with recovery rate data of people using lighted nocks verse not. But it is another step away from the original purpose of bowhunting- to give the hunter a greater challenge. If the state wanted more deer killed they should give out more tags or lengthen the gun season. Keep the challenge in bowhunting.

Regardless of P&Y or B&C, there is value in recording the numbers. As has been said her before by D.T. & D.P. they could be anonymous, or the state agencies could collect Scores. A recent Wildlife Monograph was published, “Effects of harvest, culture, and climate on trends in size of horn-like structures in trophy ungulates” by K. Monteith et al. They used over 22,000 records from 1900-2008. With all this data, they were able assess which species have become smalller, stayed the same, or even increased in antler or horn mass. I think that’s worth having the records for.

Along this line, I once was trying to melt the glue to pull and insert out of a carbon arrow. The glue hadn’t melted enough when I start to twist the insert, and I unwrapped the carbon shaft! It came out in twisting fibers! Guess I had the flame of the torch too close to the shaft.

Those are both great finds! I would love to see either of those animals in the wild, just never been down that way much. Great photos!

As for the Jag- is the state closing access to areas to protect jaguars?

In the book I recommended, “Deerland”, Cambronne discusses the issue that rural real estate in some counties of the upper midwest area is being driven by deer hunters. And the lands is really expensive, so much so farmers are losing leases or selling their land. The majority of people buying this land- residents of metropolitan areas. They are putting in food plots and want to shoot a trophy.

Doing research for a school paper (the last school paper I have to write before graduating) I came across a study titled “Wildlife and the Illinois public: A benchmark study of attitudes and perceptions”. You can find it on google scholar. Anyway, the point I’m after is, the authors found that people in urban settings thought the land can support an indefinite amount of animals, that populations are not limited by resources.

I think this all ties back to bating. Just put more food out there and more deer will appear. Even for folks that don’t hunt but feed deer.

I think peoples’ desires to hunt over bait push state game agencies to make decisions not entirely for the benefit of the deer/bear/animal. As this relates back to QDM, I think a hard decision for agencies will be: Are food plots bait?

I am glad to live in a state that does not allow baiting, CA.

This has ben a good discussion. Although, I was kind of hoping some folk that practice QDM might chime in as well, as I’d like to hear there first hand experience.

I just finished reading “Deerland” by Al Cambronne. Its a fascinating and scary look into the industrial white-tail complex. Worth a read to open my western eyes.

And since it was brought up. I read “A Year Long Day” after it was recommended here. Awesome!!! What a badass dude!
