in reply to: January hog with a few pics #9618Great pig Tailfeather! How far was the shot?
in reply to: Back stops #51439I place my targets in front of rotting, old growth stumps, and in front of hills (without rocks).
I just finished “American Catch” by paul Greenberg. His first book was “Four Fish”. Both are informative and fun reads.
Tailfeather- I read “For the Health of the Land” this Fall. It was great reading some unpublished essays of Leopold’s.
Currently I’m working on “Arctic Dreams” Barry Lopez. Fantastic so far.

I have been thinking about starting an archery club in this hamlet from a few years now and this is finally the year we are going to due it. I have done a bunch of bird hunting with a bow since I moved here. But ever since i have arrived I have talked about doing and all bow season and just take the rifle for saftey. And this is going to be the year. With the club starting this Feb. that gives me 3 months to refesh my skills before the muskox season ends and the caribou start back in good numbers. Can’t wait for this season.and my wife who is very new to archery has joined the site as well. Could be one of your only Inuit members.
Hey John. Are you taking your rifle as safety because of polar bears?
in reply to: Last minute Arizona advice for Bruce and I #48276No advice. But have fun out there fellas! I’m looking forward to seeing the pictures.
in reply to: Traditional croc hunting in Arnhem Land #21546Interesting story. Does anyone know what they do with the meat in heat like that? Is it promptly eaten by the whole village, or stored in freezers?
in reply to: studying elk #16014Blacktail,
My friend and I run trailing classes through the winter and spring. Until the bears start moving we focus on following and observing elk. Then when the bears are out we focus mainly on finding bears. I sent you a pm with our website. We are located in Humboldt County, not sure how close that is to you in Oregon.

in reply to: Think what you thought you saw #14127Kingwouldbe,
When I read this story and your other one recently posted, both stories had a deer which needed a second shot to finish him. At first, I thought, you’re a really lucky guy. But then thinking about it more, I realized you have a lot of experience and know what choice to make at the right time. In this story you mention 3.5 hours not being enough time for a gut shot deer to die. The buck I didn’t recover, I gave 3.5 hours before jumping him out of his bed. Anyway, I appreciate your stories and learn from them.
Thanks for sharing them,

Haha! That is what they teach in the Massachusetts hunter safety course (where I took it). In Mass if you follow any creek you will hit a road in less than 3 miles.
in reply to: GPS Suggestions #9121Hey Etter,
I have a GPS with a push button on the front. The button sort of sticks out above the profile of the face on the unit. This means it can easily be pushed by say a tight pack strap or branch. Then there are all these useless waypoints taken. So don’t get a GPS with easy to push buttons. I can’t remember exactly which GPS it is.

in reply to: poor performing EFOC arrow #53182Steve Graf wrote: My compromise is to use an American Semi-Log bow of my own construction. It is at least in the same general shape as a self bow. And when it comes to shooting heavy arrows, it shoots about as powerfully as any hybrid or recurve bow.
I shot a 6 pointer a few days ago in which I had an imperfect shot. The deer moved (predictably) and the arrow split the scapula’s on both sides and some ribs too. The arrow did not pass through. If the arrow does not pass through, that is clear evidence that something went bad. But the deer went about 200 yds and expired. Whew!
That’s impressive Steve. Illuminate me. What is an American Semi-long bow?
in reply to: How many bucks? #52324In California you can purchase 2 over the counter deer tags a season. Almost all of those are buck only tags. I know of one that is either sex, and you can only get one of those. Then there are a couple doe lottery tags.
CA has been a buck only state since about the ’50s. The CDFW had a antlerless rifle hunt back then, and the public’s perception was too many does were harvested. Even though the CDFW did not agree. Because of the concern, a law came about which allowed a County to veto state sanctioned antlerless hunts. The state has become so frustrated with trying to institute doe hunts and having them vetoed by County politicians, that they don’t even try to set up antlerless hunts any more. Most CDFW biologists just call what they do monitoring instead of managing now.
