Begrudgingly I admit that on RARE occasions velcro may possibly have a use. My gripe is that it is used to close and secure all manner of holders and cant be undone quietly, will self-seal when not required to do so and makes that noise that can only be likened to catching a favourite shirt on a nail and provokes the same reaction:evil:

It also collects all manner of crud and whatever its attached to WILL start to curl up at the edges when the Velcro starts to become less effective.

Best use is on emergency splints and kids shoes.

        Australian salt water croc.

Don’t know if I admire these as a predator or survivor.

I’ve never encountered them but my youngest son has whilst fishing, he said there reactions are like lightning and from lying motionless for hours can sprint fast enough to catch dogs over a short distance or anything else from pig to fisherman. They move silently and will attack from land or water.

He also encountered some spiders out there that laid siege to a camper van, left two guys in the outback for four days without access to any of their gear.

Hiram, ‘Female velcro on the belly side tips, help silence string hits on recurves.’ this must be velcro’s only saving grace.

Cottonwood, may I suggest an alternative to Science Diet, rice and smoked sausage, the rice just needs a zip-lock bag or four individual portions of half a mug, a couple of spiced sausages can be distributed about pockets and pack easily and is good hot or cold.

Michael, I’ve lost mine but these are great ‘Fallkniven DC3 Sharpening Stone’ diamond one side and ceramic the other and very light.

            Learn to make fire.

If camping push two sticks into the ground and place boots upside down on these at night, helps to stop things moving in ,allows air to circulate and stops them filling with water because it will rain the minute you leave them unattended.

Change batteries in flash lights etc. frequently and take spares.

In areas where you expect to find water a good filtration system is often easier than carrying extra water.

BURN VELCOVE nothing in nature sounds like it and it can’t be undone silently, its only good for kids shoes.

Always plan a stalk/creep check the ground, dead ground, bottle necks, dead ends, thorn bushes and wind.

Don’t get tunnel vision when tracking or stalking always check to the sides and whats between you and the target.

Take something to eat that makes you feel good for when you are sat under your poncho watching the world become a sponge.

Take something off before you get hot and put something on before you get cold.

I find sharpening a form of meditation if I don’t clear my mind and focus on the job in hand I will pay, in blood.

If you are laying aside sharpened blades dip them in the wax toolmakers use to protect cutting tools, stops corrosion and protects them from minor damage.

Hi Reb, just checked out the Rage website and as far as I can see they don’t do a comparison with ‘a good solid cut on contact BH’ as suggested by Fletcher.
Any mechanical devise must use energy to activate it, in the case of broadheads this results in less penetration and with all things mechanical they will go wrong from time to time.
If available you could try a good dog to follow up.
I’ll be thinking of you sat by the BBQ, Mark.

in reply to: Flemish strings #48281

I’ve made a few strings now two and three bundle that look and work OK, I’ve used B50 on my selfbow but now want to make a three bundle string using Fast Flight Plus for my Dwyer longbow.

My question is how many strands:?: or is this material so strong that I just need sufficient to fill the arrow nock.

I had the great pleasure of shooting on Saturday with four guys that are preparing to visit your side of the pond in September, three have visited previously and taken pigs, black bear and whitetail but this year they are after elk, I would so like to join them but just can’t get away from work.

Good news, shot steadily for about 4 hours Saturday and no pain just a dull ache Sunday. I hope your problems are sorting themselves out.

Patrick, you may find this interesting if long winded, see below.

Cootonwood, I have been told that here in the UK it was an oversight that bows were not included/approved, it is quite legal to kill rabbits etc. with an air rifle but not a 50# bow. As for poaching I’m not sure ,dogs are the most popular method followed by snares and the rifles bows and crossbows are used rarely.

M, I’ve spent a lot of time with German’s doing business and socially most have a good sense of humour (or non at all), you would have to go a long way to offend them, however you could always really upset them by saying they know nothing about beer and schnapps is only good for degreasing, not that I would.

Euthanize, now there’s a word that needs to be dealt with, just checked the spelling and found this ‘from the Greek meaning “good death”. Now if that’s not a word that’s used out of turn I don’t know what is.

How about ‘taking a surplus from a sustainable resource’

Now if that were apples you would pick them but in the case of deer or any other animal you must kill it.

I guess the moral high ground is that as a hunter you have not delegated the responsibility of killing and butchering to someone else and in doing so you impact nature and the environment less than farming, transport, slaughterhouses, supermarkets and all else that goes into farm reared meet.

Might be going off on a tangent again, Mark.
