in reply to: Answered Prayers… #29549
Nice one, looks like a trophy to me.

‘…any regrets from yesterday?’ No, but I have a few, but too few to mention, I feel a song coming on.
Good reply Col. Mike ‘be true to thine self’ the man ounce said and I guess if you can do that you can look anyone in the eye.
As for allowing folks to die in peace perhaps they had something that modern society finds difficult to accept but might be better for it.
My apologies for wading in, my grandmother would have given me hell for being impolite, welcome to the campfire sir.

in reply to: Private land (more ethics) #25241Strictly speaking I think hunting out of season would be illegal but as you have permission would not be poaching.
Good luck with your conversion of the non hunters, as folks that rarely eat meat they may well enjoy some venison with all the benefits over farmed meats.
Just reread your post and you highlight that they are non-hunters and not anti-hunting (otherwise you would not have got permission, bit slow today) the world over these are the folks we need to be educating, does anyone have literature aimed specifically at this group?

in reply to: The anser to all our problems! #25222Rant away Sir.
Are these the signs of an industry disappearing up its own existence:?:
I have to admit to liking gadgets, I have a flash light and a Leatherman:shock: but my greatest confession has to be fixing one of those new fangle telescope things to my rifle, cant see it catching on.
Ironically I used to enjoy shooting open sights but the scope has taken away any sense of achievement so it now gets used a couple of times a year to fill the freezer.
Think Ill stick to ‘stick and string’ keeps life simple.

Not so much a rant as a ramble.
in reply to: String Makers #24149For what its worth Ive only been making strings for a couple of years but really enjoy the process, if you use fast flight lay in some padding in the loops I think its kinder on the bow.
On the subject of silencers I reasoned that synthetic wool would be less absorbent and more durable than real wool, Steve is absolutely right it did not work for me either, why I have never used real wool I can think but will give it a go.

Colmike, an interesting example but I question whether legal requirements and moral principles are the same thing.
If an aggressor makes to through a petrol bomb at you then rules of engagement say you can engage to protect life and property, however if he is 100m away and there is no immediate danger to life or property can you still engage to prevent him doing this in the future as he is clearly demonstrating that he is prepared to damage life or property?

in reply to: Pineywoods longbow doe #8371Congratulations, I’m sure I can smell venison cooking!

in reply to: Retrieving on private land #8364I have permission on a small piece of land that is quite productive, small fields, lots of dips and hollows wooded on one side and although its only small due to the shape of it over a mile of small river bordering two sides, if I could I’d buy it but it will never come up for sale and if it did I could probably not afford it.
To finally get to the point Ive made a point of introducing myself to the neighbors so they wont be concerned if they see me creeping along a hedge row. This has paid off as they now have no problem with me retrieving game, mostly pheasant and duck but also allow me to hunt both sides of the boundary for rabbits.

in reply to: Back to the Mountains! #59206Etter, you may not have a bear down but you do have some memories that will last a life time.
Keep at it and I look forward to reading the next installment.

in reply to: Book Recommendation #54841Bowhunting Alaska’s Wild Rivers by Jay Massey, this has been reviewed many times by people far more knowledgeable and experienced than me, they all said how good the book was I can only say their reviews were understated, its top shelf in every respect.
I don’t know if I will ever have the opportunity to visit Alaska but I feel having read this book I appreciate a little of what it takes to float and hunt its rivers.
Looking forward to reading it again.
Mark.
