in reply to: Another Noisy Recurve #12725
Thanks Robin, I knew there was a more coherent explanation somewhere.

in reply to: Empathy for wildlife #12719Empathy, sympathy, reverence not sure I have the vocabulary to explain the feelings and emotions.
For me its taking responsibility its my decision to lose an arrow or pull the trigger.
We can never know how an animal truly experiences nature we can only observe their responses to a given circumstance or stimulation.
I hunt because I’m hard wired to, x number of millions of years of evolution and natural selection, its part of my being.
I show respect to the animals that I, occasionally, kill by doing my utmost to ensure a clean kill, butchering them to the best of my ability and not wasting any meat, sharing with friends and family.
By hunting and killing I have not relegated the animal to the level of protein by asking someone else to raise it, ship it across the country, kill it, butcher it, through away a lot of good meat, pack it, chill/freeze it put it on a supermarket shelf and potentially through it away after a few days because its reached its sell by date.
Don’t know if that adds anything to the debate.

in reply to: Another Noisy Recurve #63568Like Etter says yarn makes a difference.
Also try this method for positioning the silencers, measure, the string nock to nock, divide by four that gives the distance from one nock to the location for the first silencer, top.
Again take the measurement and divide by three this gives the distance from the other nock for the second silencer.
The reason for doing this is to dampen vibration, like ironing out a sine wave.
That’s crap explanation, there’s a better description here that someone else put up if you can find it.
Hope it helps, Mark.
in reply to: Another Noisy Recurve #62450Damn wondered what that noise was, thought they had started fracking!
I’ve no experience of Martin bows but how heavy are your arrows? some of the older bows like HEAVY arrows.
Re. the silencers have you spaced them 1/3 and 1/4 of string length or placed them randomly.
Like Dave says custom bows are way ‘different’ and most bowyers will happily help you set up used bows of their making.

in reply to: Trad Transport #59261I need one of these: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X8lLUdyaFO0
in reply to: Trad Transport #51591Subaru forester, pre face lift without all the techno crap. Tough, reliable, economical and fixable by most competent mechanics.
And you get 4×4 just in case.
Toyota Pius, the worlds most polluting vehicle.
Mitsubishi have a new hybrid that looks good, initially costly but the mpg is….lots (I cant remember)
Skoda Yeti, I’d have a commercial version if they made one in 4×4.
Skoda Superb Octavia, it’s a VW.
Skoda QC and reliability is amongst the best in the industry.
Police in Germany are using the Octavia 4×4 in preference to the BMW’s because of its handling.
I just want a Toyota land cruiser but my bank account wont run to it.

Cant add much but have a few thoughts.
Think of the body as a filter system, refined foods pass easily thru the filter and get stored as fat, less refined foods take more energy to break down and produce fats that are not so easily stored.
Diets foods are not, just in the same way the banks are not your friend.
Don’t eat when the hunger pangs tell you to, accept them as an indicator that the diets working and wait 30 min to an hour until the hunger has subsided then you will eat less and be more considered in what you consume.
If your diet is for fitness don’t bother with scales your body will change shape as you get fitter and stronger, look at the holes in your belt and fit of your clothes, monitor pressups and sit ups in a given time and recovery time weekly.
Now I just need to put it into practice.

in reply to: Question about wood arrow finishes #49283Ralph, I like your tag line, I’ll be in France this time next week very appropriate.
Dave, you might try wiping of the scull and applying bleach, wipe or brush it on sparingly careful not to get it on the horn.

in reply to: Keeping the "hunt" in hunting #46832Mad Dog, you’re as cynical as I am.
Only a few years ago trail cams, drones, range finders etc were little more than comic book gadgets, for so many all over the globe hunting is being conducted as though it were warfare.
Do we right off those that rely on these gadgets to fill a tag and put all our effort into promoting moral/ethical traditional values in hunting to preserve the distinction between traditional methods and concentrate on the next generation.
I may be a continent away and use the term ‘we’ but we have all the same issues here plus some.

in reply to: In Case Y'all Don't Know #46710I now have a vision of a planet ringed by arrows, bit like Saturn only more trad. It make a convincing argument for space exploration, free arrows!
Come to think of it the contents of my wallet also achieve escape velocity on a regular basis, now I know where all my money went:?
Yea but Mom would still run the show.
Doc, you two timin my sister:twisted:
Don’t know what tangerines and Rick O’Shea has to do with it all seems quite logical to me, pass the paint Doc.
in reply to: In Case Y'all Don't Know #45720Were I a Buddhist I would claim that I was, I am and I have, sadly I’m not.
At the same time not wishing to disrespect Mr Twain whom I think would be a most entertaining guest at the campfire.
Doc, you’ll like my sister I’ve passed on your e-mail address, she’ll be sure to drop you a line when she gets out, back.

in reply to: In Case Y'all Don't Know #44972Ralph, so using ‘farthest north eastern state’ physics your 40# bows just going to to darn fast you’ll need to slow things down and go up to at least 60#
I thought 28# was industry standard, where can I get 55″ shaft, anyone?
Eidsvolling,’Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.’-Mark Twain, just would not be fair on your sister.
Mark. (not Twain, don’t want cause confusion)
in reply to: Keeping the "hunt" in hunting #44471This thread makes interesting reading, Ive just been looking at some dictionary definitions for the word ‘ethic’ and I’m not sure it applies as I thought it should for the following reason.
I’ll spare you the full dictionary definitions and leave you free to explore them as you think fit, Ethics is defined in subtly different ways in the various dictionaries Ive consulted, they refer to Christian ethics, Medical ethics, Virtues, Duty, a set of principles of right conduct.
But all these depend upon the culture your from, the political, tribal, family principles that you adhere too.
Are we not as hunters embracing traditional values not bound by a ‘moral code’ that is to abide by the law of the land, ensure a clean kill, use all that we can from the kill, respect the environment those we find in it and the nature, and pass on our knowledge and experience to ensure that good moral principles continue with the next generation.
Not wanting to get into religion and politics but Id much rather have a ‘moral code’ to abide by than be held to account by the political and religious elite.
Mark.
Have you considered one of these:

Never used one myself but they are very popular with the adventures folk the world over.
