in reply to: ignoring facts #52818
Pouring through the research is right up my alley…I love it! Dr Ashby’s research is amazing, and I think it’s a fool who derides his research. I’ve EASILY talked hundreds (maybe thousands ) of hunters over the years, who have shot a couple deer and think they know it all. “XYX broadhead almost cut the deer in half, so it’s the best broadhead!”. “ABC broadhead didn’t leave a blood trail so it sucks!”, and so on. Dr Ashby actually did his tests the right way…the good ole’ scientific method. What an incredible resource!
With that said, I can completely understand why some would ignore the research. Some people just want their bow, string, arrows, and broadheads, and don’t want to get caught up in changing bows, arrows, broadheads, etc. They have what they know has worked over the years for them, and they are confident in the equipment, which is IMMENSELY important. I have a lot of respect for those hunters as well.
in reply to: President Roosevelt's Birthday #52674I just found a BRAND new book by Douglas Brinkley titled:
“The Wilderness Warrior: Theodore Roosevelt and the Crusade for America”
Looks like a good book. It’s a monster though. About the same size as “The Rise and Fall of The Third Reich”, and that took me FOREVER to read! It’ll have to stand in line. I’m working on two of Dave Peterson’s books right now. 😉

Good luck!

LOL! Are you serious?!
in reply to: short bows #50379Dang it you guys! Now you’ve got me hankerin’ for a short longbow. Reminds me of jumbo shrimp. 😆

I love using blue jay feathers for the hat I’m wearing in my avatar. They look awesome in it (to me anyway :D)
Of all the “regulars” living where I do, the Black-Capped Chickadee is my favorite. At my feeder, when I stood still, I could get them to eat out of my hand. They are cool little birds.
in reply to: Your first whitetail? #50163I first started bowhunting at 11 years old with a compound and didn’t get a one until I was 15. Last year was the first full year of using a longbow and missed one at 15 yards. First time missing in a number of years. So far this year I had a nice 6 pt about 15 yards away but blew the opportunity because I failed to trim a couple small brances (I didn’t shoot).
This is my 10 year old son’s first year hunting and he shot a nice 6 pt, earlier this year. 8 yard shot. Unfortunately, I think he shot it back aways, and it bled VERY little. We found it a couple days ago, thanks to a due East wind (I could smell it). He’s excited that we found it (any 10 year old would), but I’m disappointed in myself for not finding it for him. Bitter sweet. He’s using a compound, but only because of monetary constraints. I’m going to get him a nice longbow this winter or spring.

I can really relate to that! I worked at a rather large mom & pop sporting goods (read: hunting/fishing only) for 9 years, and I would get so irritated at some of the unbelievably irresponsible people who would leave there, “ready” to shoot deer. They would buy bows the day before bow season starts, and hunt the next day. Buy guns, I would bore sight it, and that was “good enough for them”..they’d hunt the next day. I could go on, and on.
I think you guys will really appreciate this one: I went elk hunting in Oregon with my dad, the year I graduated from HS. We went with his friend, and were going to meet his relatives out there, with whom we’d hunt. O-M-G! The one guy was bragging that the first elk he ever shot was a “herd shot”. Yeah…he just flung an arrow into the herd of elk and just happened to mortally wound one. I was young and a guess, so I kept my mouth shut the whole time I was there.

Patrick, SB is one of the premier knife makers in all of North America. He’s far too humble and mild mannered to admit it though. You’d be hard pressed to find anyone more qualified to restore your beautiful knife. Just thought you should know.
Ron
Agreed…on all counts! 😀
I’d love to have him create one from scratch someday. 8)in reply to: 4 wheelers, Dave Peterson #49475J.Wesbrock wrote: One of the nice things about forums such as these is that they allow people to gain perspective on things outside their experience.
That is SO true! Excellent point.
Case in point:
LEskew wrote: ATVs do suck indeed, but I think the sheer NUMBERS of bowhunters in the Colorado woods have damaged far more hunts. All I have are anecdotes but they’re disturbing nonetheless: Last I checked, there were 13 times as many elk tags issued in Colorado than in Wyoming. This year I packed 6 miles into a northern Colorado wilderness area; on the first morning, I was literally aiming at a bull when he suddenly bolted away. Ten seconds later here came two clueless compounders on a mission, loaded down with gadgets. Over the next several days I ran into no fewer than 15 bowhunters, including a couple of trads (one a CBA area rep!) who carved out a new permanent spur trail with their 9 — yes 9 — horses.
I would have NEVER guessed you’d see bowhunters like that while out hunting in wilderness areas.
in reply to: Custom Knife Handle: A Work In Progress #49430I CANNOT wait to get that baby back and see it in person! Absolutely amazing! By the way, I WILL be using it. I’ve used it to field dress deer before. A knife is meant to be used, no matter how gorgeous (and this one is as GORGEOUS as it gets!) Hopefully, I’ll be field dressing a buck this year with it yet. 😀
The Bald Eagle’s comeback has been amazing in just the last 10-15 years here in Michigan. I’m sure we don’t have near as many as you do up there, but we have alot them.
My favorite bird to watch is the Rough-Legged Hawk. They breed in the Artic, but they come down here during the winter. They’ll “hover” over a spot, moving their head around, searching for voles, mice, etc. When they spot one, they’ll fold up their wings and drop.
in reply to: God's Dog… #49420Interesting ancestoral info. I never heard that.
Where I hunt/live, I wish we had more coyotes. I’ve also had a chance to take them, but declined. There’s just not enough around for my liking, and I love to watch them “pouncing for mice”.
in reply to: Most wonderful time of the year #48462Yep, they sure are, and it sure is! Unfortunately, I had to give up this, and next weeks vacation time during the summer.:cry::cry:
I still get to hunt in the mornings and weekends though.
