You guys are probably saying the same thing in a different way, but a forward riser, also known as a deflex riser, doesn’t shorten your draw length. It lengthens the bows brace height. The string doesn’t travel forward as far as it does with a reflex risered bow (all else being equal), which decreases the time duration the string is in contact with the arrow, which decreases the amount of stored energy in the bow from transferring to the arrow. All else being equal, a deflex risered bow will be more forgiving. A reflex risered bow will provide more speed. I would imagine the deflex riser on the shrew is PART of the reason it can be shot well, despite it being a relatively short longbow.

SB, I was wondering what in the world you were talking about when refering to the “non-typical longbow”! The wording gave me the impression you were refering to a specific bow. However, I thought you were using “non-typical” as a general term for bows that are, well, not your typical, run-of-mill bow. I was quite puzzled. That is, until I visited http://www.brackenburybows.com. THEN it all made sense.

Great attitude to have! I’m still a work in progress.:)

I too, have until January 1st to fill a tag yet. My attitude went South on November 15th, while bowhunting on the opener of firearm season. Our opener fell on a Sunday this year, and I heard more shooting this year than all three previous years combined! I was seething inside thinking about all the hunting I did, then these others just plop their rear-ends down for a few minutes opening morning, shoot a deer, then brag about their hunting prowess. I know I shouldn’t feel that way. If for no other reason, I can’t change it! I’m working on it.

When it comes to the Bible, I’m an NASB kind of guy. C.S. Lewis is awesome. Mere Christianity is a great book.

I bought it at the sporting goods store I buy my traditional equipment from. I was shocked that they had it (none of the employees knew they had it). It’s available here too:
                    http://www.amazon.com/Instinctive-Archery-Insights-Jay-Kidwell/dp/0963971824

I’m reluctant to give further examples out of fear I will not do it justice. Nevertheless, another example:
Along with shooting long distances to learn windage, long distance shooting will also assist with learning the arrows trajectory, and imprinting that into your subconscious as well. When shooting ALL of your focus should be on the target. When you release, part of your follow-through should include a SLIGHT focus shift to accomodate your arrow as it arcs toward the target. The trajectory does NOT change in relation to your hold/arm when you shoot at closer ranges. The arrow is simply stopped short of it’s full arc by hitting the ground or target.
That part somewhat reminded me of Byron Ferguson’s book “Become the Arrow”, but MUCH better!!!

Also: When you miss the target, don’t consider it a negative. Every miss, just as every bullseye, is a lesson learned.

Incidently, my wife is singing both ours and the Canadian National Anthems tommorow at the Saginaw Spirits hockey game. I’ve been inundating her with info from that same book to help her keep focused and confident. As Kidwell says, “Preparation breeds confidence and confidence breeds success”

Here’s the conclusion I come to after reading that article, as well as Dr Ashby’s condition:

                      I’M A BIG WUSS!

                      (Get well soon Dr. Ashby!)

Sweet! No time like the present!

I know I’m going to start sounding like a parrot here, repeating myself incessantly, nevertheless…

(sorry for bad joke 😀 )Anyway…

Do yourself a HUGE favor and buy Jay Kidwell’s book “Instinctive Archery Insights” (revised edition). It will put you on the right course when it comes to shooting instinctively.

Just an example: shooting at LONG distances (100 – 200 yards) will imprint the hold for correct windage into your subconscious, so that it will no longer be a variable. Those long distances greatly exagerate any error in your left/right hold.
(Im paraphrasing of course, there’s more to it than that, but that gives a good snippit)

                          Howdy,

it’s the same as most things in life. Generally, the more you spend the better. BUT, twice the price isn’t twice as good. As quality increases, approaching the best, the price increases exponentially. Ever so slight improvements can cause a substantial price hike. BUT (yep, another but), you must also consider how much of the price is aesthetics vs how much is performance. Hope this helps…at least a little tiny bit.

Lol! Your wish is my command. That’s my favorite hat too. My wife hates, or at least she used to. She’s used to it now (or so she says). Mind you, she won’t go so far as to say she likes it though. 😆

A Buck 110 was my first hunting knife too, but I lost it many years ago in the woods. My dad bought it for me. He still uses his 110. I think that’s the only hunting knife he’s owned.
