Since Tyler definitely needs a new bag, maybe I should give him mine and I’ll get a new one. 😆
in reply to: Planning an Elk Hunt #54977Sleeping bags:
I have a North Face Cat’s Meow, which is a synthetic insulation, 20 degree bag. It has served me well over the years. Would you suggest a lower temp rated bag, or should I be okay with what I have?

I was going to suggest the same thing
in reply to: Planning an Elk Hunt #50937After just a little bit of research, I have come to the conclusion that we are definitely going on our elk hunting adventure next year. It’s the last year Tyler qualifies for a junior license (he’ll be 17 next year, at that time), and that’ll save me some big bucks!

You’ve got me wanting to open my own homeless shelter!

So I had him trying on some of my hiking boots and going through my back packs. I picked the two out we are taking and had him try one on. He said “But dad, my pack is twice as big as your pack”. To which I replied “good eye boy, good eye.”
With age, comes wisdom. 😉
in reply to: Planning an Elk Hunt #49462I’m also putting my son to work, making him help with the research. He thinks it’s just busy work, because he doesn’t think I need his help, but he’s wrong. As time goes by, I’m sure it’ll give him a sense of accomplishment, as well as help him, so he can confidently plan his own adventures as he branches out on his own (snifle, snifle).
in reply to: Winter Rove #49422Great post!

Just kidding. Very creative. Thanks Patrick:)
Just so happens that I have some glue-ons and long adapters laying around.
Measure out two grains of glue, and walla! I have the answer for everything. 😆
And you’re welcome. 😉
in reply to: Planning an Elk Hunt #48649We are definitely going to taking the “high elevation rocky mountain terrain, with long vistas where I could watch elk from 1000 yards away then try to sneak in on them” option, and we are definitely going the DIY route as well. I’m hoping my son really bulks up in the next couple years so he can carry most of our gear. 😆

If that’s where we go, I will definitely be taking advantage of your offer! That respite paid off after all! 😆
David Petersen wrote: Meanwhile, I offered basic advice on researching a diy elk hunt in some book somewhere, maybe Man Made of Elk. I’m currently in CA visiting my wife’s family and getting a nostalgic dose of Pacific beach time, but it doesn’t sound like you’re in a rush.
I still have stuff packed up from my move in July. I’m going to figure out where I stashed my books, and find that info! There worth rereading anyway. 😉
Hope all is going well for you D!
in reply to: Add weight to a Judo?? #47672In an attempt to redeem myself, if instead of using the screw-in judo, you use the glue-on version (135 grains for the 11/32 version) and then use the long aluminum screw-in broadhead adapter (42 grains for the 11/32 version), you’ll be at 177 grains.

Good Pat!!!
Now I can have one nut behind the judo for weight and one nut farther back to add misses without having any washers involved. :D:D
Someone needs to come up with something that looks like a blunt of different weights only only drilled and tapped so to screw another point into it.
:oops::lol:

😳 No, you were very clear. I just didn’t pay close enough attention to what it was I was posting.
Kind of like a screw-in version of a Woody Weight. It surprised me that something like that’s not readily available.
in reply to: Planning an Elk Hunt #47558I can completely relate, in that if someone were to ask about whitetail hunting, I’d be at a loss to provide direction as well.
I intend to keep this thread going, through the entire process. Hopefully, in addition to obtaining some useful information for our hunt, I can help others intending to do the same.
