in reply to: long shots #49510David Petersen wrote: Mike — For all the many and extreme convulutions that I and others introduce to this ongoing good discussion about hunting ethics and weapons choice, etc., you have just nailed it in the heart in so very few words: traditional bowhunting is the best hunting because it’s about getting close and being sure before you pop the cap. And getting close and being sure, by minimizing risk and chance, are the height of ethical hunter behavior. No “Hail Marys” wanted, as that is not our mission or goal. I guess (I’m obviously indulging in a bit of neo-Freudian self-analysis here) that my unsalvable pain in this arena of life arises from the fact that all hunters don’t share an appreciation for “doing it the hard way.” Which, for us recovering (to use AAA-speak) Marines equate the hard way with the best way. :lol, no matter our losses. But seriously, all hunting ethics discussions must begin and end with respect and, yes, love for the animal as our foremost concern, with personal dignity and self-respect a close second. If not so, then we are willingly if mostly blindly relinquishing the high ground and our harshest critics’ arguments are strengthened. Nobody promised us a rose garden, eh? Semper Fi, young man. 😛
I share the same “unsalvable” angst! I have always enjoyed employing muscle and determination as the source of much of my satisfaction. When talk turns to quads and tech I just shut down and mentally leave the discussion…what pride is there in sitting on yer arse and imposing yourself on the landscape….boy could a guy get on a podium…that said I suspect at least 1/2 of it is a general personality issue in that I need to be seperate from the ” crowd” in a sense. I wonder if the Myers Briggs personality test was applied to the trad crowd if we wouldn’ t all come up pretty similar?
in reply to: Facial Recognition #43880Dave – have you shared your fall story or would you be willing? I’ve been lucky to never have fallen but have been very lucky after boot slips on a branch halfway up. More and more I’m disinclined to trees because gravity always works…
in reply to: A comment on crossbows #43526I may get my butt handed to me for this Neanderthal thinking… but a lot of the modern tech bows are for Grandmas and weenies:P! No offense to anyone here. Just another monkey at the zoo throwing poop I am and an opinion worth less than 2 cents:lol:
in reply to: Historic bowhunter #41480Interesting and thanks for sharing. I just cannot imagine not being able to bowhunt!
in reply to: What if …? #37759Very nice deebate up there. I enjoyed it. Truthfully the best part was noting Daves’ signature quote. That’ s a brilliant observation.
in reply to: new bow help #35104Oh, and to add to the above I didn’ t go broke buying them:D
in reply to: new bow help #35101I have a 70′ s era Bear Grizzly that shoots well and has that classic look. The other bow I have is a Jim Reynolds Thunderstick (Mi. bowyer) that I just stumbled upon at the time and has grown on me since. It’ s only 45 lb but plenty for the local whitetails and carries like a feather which means a LOT to me. In no way can I speak with the depth of knowledge some here have, but those 2 bows can drill them in if I do my part.

Events conspired against me. Regret that I can’t make it but hope all OD’d on sticks, strings and goodies.
in reply to: What if …? #34665Steve Graf wrote: [quote=lyagooshka]…I guess people need to re-think what a “hunter” is. At any given moment, I can, within 15 minutes, walk to any of 3 supermarkets which are open 24/7. I don’t NEED to hunt. I CHOOSE to.
Hmmm. I usually don’t add to a thread when it goes the way this thread has because I usually come off sounding self-righteous… But how ever are we going to truly share our experiences with others (read non trad hunters) if we see ourselves as soooo much better?
And for me, I am the opposite of Lyagooshka. It’s not that I want to hunt. I need to hunt. I have no choice in the matter (not picking on you L. Just saying how I am). And for myself, grocery stores are not an option. Industrial “food” is canned cancer. Living the traditional life doesn’t end with a walk in the woods with a bow. It starts there.
If you want snobby self righteous, here goes : If I don’t catch it, kill it, or grow it, my family doesn’t eat it. Now there’s a commitment to traditional hunting.
And again L, not picking on you, just using you for a sound board… because I hear this all too often from my trad friends. To claim that hunting with a trad bow puts us in touch with nature and the real human soul, while at the same time buying industrial “meat” and “veggies” is being oblivious to the truths we claim, so self-righteously, to know.
God, I hope I don’t get my arse handed to me for this one 😳
Nah. Most of us are somewhere in the middle as you set the scene up there. Everyone has some version of the “truth” and good luck to anyone who claims they’ve found it.
in reply to: witch is beter #32777Yah. Cabin fever’ s it! I might start changing the channels without the remote. This dog needs to play frisbee outside. Jan- March is stinko for me as A. Bunker used to say. I’ d hibernate if I could.
in reply to: witch is beter #31705What did they beter with? Ball bat? Sorry now it’ s mob mentality.
in reply to: Antler Hunting #25819They’ re most visible here in Mi. right after the snow melts (that is if we ever get a snowy winter again??). They stand right out against the matted vegetation more than the rest of the year. Still rare to find but often enough that my wife comments “do you have to have all these antlers around”:D. An antler in the right place is all good!
