The southern 1/3 of lower Mi. got hit the worst. Local pockets got devastated. Our DNR at the low end is at 15k. Other educated estimates I’ve seen go to 75k. On sightings around the house, down 2/3 easy this year. I need a therapist:cry:

Dave – I was fooling around with boot photos when you posted…glad to hear you are recovering…didn’t know about all that. Enjoy the pain meds:wink:

Here’s my boots! Can’t seem to find the exact same ones, but I’d buy another pair. Light, good tread and with gaiters in deeper snow they have worked well enough for me.

David Petersen wrote: I phoned Arrow, a nice man. The boots you are talking about are unlined and the double leather sole has no tread. They are not suitable, I was told, for snow or other slick walking or really cold weather, and like all leather footwear they are not waterproof. (I took the opportunity to tell them about Montana Pitch Blend, which is far superior to Snow Seal, which Arrow recommends.) The Arrow mukluks, however, are felt lined and have crepe soles, just like LL Bean Maine Hunting Shoe, and were originally designed for use with snowshoes. But they aren’t waterproof either and I quit wearing my Beans when snow is on the ground because the tread is insufficiently aggressive. So all these sound like fair-weather footwear, which is good as it will save me money I don’t have for a product, albeit cool and sexy, I don’t really need. But that still leaves me with no warm, lightweight, waterproof, snow-gripping winter boots.

I have walked hundreds of miles of utility right of way in winter in a pair of 400 gram thinsulate Irish Setter boots by Red Wing. I don’t know what model they are, but rubber bottomed with excellent tread. I can’t have less with what I do. Leather uppers but unless I go over the top in the goo I’ve been quite happy with them and hope they still make them because mine are now pretty beat. Well, back to the Halloween candy…

Heck, with Chefs and exotic ingredients all the rage (I do watch Chopped!) I’m sure you could make a real festival out of one:P You won’t have much competition that’s for sure.

Here’s my story. I’m going to have my bow painted black with a white stripe up the middle. Skunked again:evil: I think the rut better kick in because I need it!

“on Pluto…”…now that right there is hilarious, I don’t care who you are!

Curious, how does that “Johnny ball” thing work or look?

Here’s a pic I plucked off the web. It can be thrown overhand if the limb is low. You can also tie it off and use both arms to hold the string and get it swinging. Once you feel you have the right swing for the range, you let fly and hopefully the thing goes over the limb you were aiming for. On Youtube if you search “throwing johnny ball tree work” there is a 5 minute video of somebody throwing one in Hawaii. It’s in the first 30 seconds or so of the video. I didn’t watch the rest.

Clay, you have an excellent series underway! I’ve enjoyed each one you’ve posted. This one I could really relate to since I work around utility line clearance tree trimmers every week. Those guys carry a little throw bag, their “johnny ball” and are just plain artists at getting a line over branches that may as well be on Pluto for most of us:)

Last time out I saw one little coon:D I thought everybody had to know that! Wind was swirling around like the devil and I got busted with a wheeze. Of course, I get back to the Jeep and not a half mile down the road at the edge of my headlights stands a real hatrack of a buck ready to cross the road. I have time this pm so I’m gonna go get him!

That’s just a groovy pic! Has an Impressionistic feel. Agree with your sentiments 100%.

Hey Jim – not to change the great subject…but curious if the fires down there have affected your area?

I’m lucky to get out once a week. Not much time to work with after work. I’m lucky enough to be outdoors a lot at work so maybe I’m overexposed to fresh air? Seriously. Sometimes I just don’t want to step in another swamp or crawl through brush ever again at the end of my work week:shock:!
