All that up there! And, I hit a small buck in the neck (spined it) as a teenage hunter. It blatted and bawled something awful. So, I prefer not to go that route by choice.
in reply to: A day in the woods…At last! #47557Alex – welcome back! It must be great to stay in one place for a while. My bro went to that Asylum in the bottom pic:lol:

Like the Gillian Welch quote! I think it’s her album “Revival” that is so to the bone soulful in that Appalachian way. Have to go find it now.
in reply to: Longbow vs. Recurve techniques. #33830I’ve shot both, and to me anyway, it’s like comparing writing with a pencil to a pen. I’m sure there are differences but if I get all analytic about it messes me up if that makes sense:wink:
in reply to: Champion among us #30886Jason – congrats! Aren’t you a Wolverine from Michigan? If so X2 Homey:D
in reply to: Crossfit and hunting? #30877When I’m doing field work (lots if walking utility rights of way at times) I’ll just throw down 30 pushups 4X a day. Combined with the walking it’s as easy as pie vs a formal workout after dragging myself all over the countryside at the end of the day. I haven’t done them in the office yet, but I might!
in reply to: North GA Bear 2014 #25196Sweet Potato of a story! N. Ga. looks like the place to be for Blackie. My record was 4 in one day, so I know you are in primo habitat. Be ready when they attack:lol:!
Thanks for the thoughtful replies. It is all excellent advice! I considered deleting this post, but let it hang, knowing the wisdom that is out there, and that in most cases we are not alone in these issues. I remember eating right off the farm as a kid, and a treat was a TREAT… something usually sugary or salty that didn’t grow well from the ground. Then you grow up and treats are everywhere and no one can say no you can’t have that… +50 years later your diet is to the dogs…lame but true! I do carry much pride in NOT being just another overweight American, but I have to try harder now that our national diets are in general, as bad as they are.
in reply to: Cold Weather Gloves #24158Maybe one of those muff type jobs if I’m using the right term? The fleece lined tube you put your hands in while at rest….I never used one but a friend has and seemed to like it at the time. It could probably be secured so it wouldn’t swing into your string.
in reply to: Cold Weather Gloves #24130You could try one of the shooters mittens – where the fingers part of the mitt velcro’s back on top of the mitt. Or one with the fingers cut off. Other than that I just keep my draw hand in my coat pocket and wait for the action:lol:
I went to 9 classes with my wife this spring. I can see tremendous potential for the – key word – dedicated – practitioner. I saw 70 somethings and an 80 something or two move very fluidly, the instructor saying several came initially with varying degrees of arthritis. As I age I may revisit. I am still your basic push-upper and do a lot of off rd walking on the job. Tai Chi will humble you. It is the iceberg effect to what you think you know of your body and mind. We did not use video so I can’t help there. Go for it!
in reply to: countdown! #20377I guess it’s a bit of age, but I’m happy with a nice, long summer right now. That 6 month stretch of polar vortexes did nothing for me to want it back soon.
in reply to: What are your favorite trad pictures? #17556Frame that. I butted heads with my father like that was “the way it was done”. Learning late in life what a waste of time that was.
in reply to: thoughtful reading #17547Read several and enjoyed all. Thoreau would’ve been proud of such thoughtfulness.
