Ralph – is that up at 3:30 pm? I’m not familiar with Mulies…do they rub and scrape like whitetails this time of year down there or do you get a later rut period?
in reply to: Dream Hunts #62280A gray, cold, and still day, a mile or few back on a hardwood ridge in northern New England. Freshly kicked up scrapes along the ridge line and shreds of green-orange bark curled at the base of new rubs. That’s all I’ve ever needed.

In those 60 years I have only missed 2 opening mornings. One in 1962 when a jerk professor scheduled an 8:00am exam and the other in 2002 when Christine was putting up a valiant battle against breast cancer. She gave me hell for not being in the woods but I couldn’t leave her.
One Michigander to another, keep those arrows straight! Congratulations on all the years you’ve enjoyed.
in reply to: Killed one #54485I would go find me a nice Georgia sweet potato to go in the pot with that shoulder. Sweet eatin’ to you! Happy fall.

Then I spotted these gals about 500 yds. across a canyon so I hid behind a yucca and fawn bleated with my coyote call and here they came. Two came within 50 yds. before getting nervous.
Wrong gender, mule deer is buck only, whitetails 1 buck-4 does.
By the way, the porky, didn’t check gender. It can be whatever it wanna be:D
Thought about Larry today
Most what you read about calling deer is about whitetails.
I was calling coyotes years ago, kind of “mewing” the call and I nearly got ran over by two muley does. They were ready to kick butt.
Since then I’ve called muley does to me a lot of times, shot a nice buck once (rifle) that followed a doe in. I’ve turned down small bucks numerous times.
Today I crawled out so as not to ruin the day by spooking those does. That sucked cause of cactus and rocks but the things we to for the Gipper” 😀
I would’ve never thought of Texas having porcupines. Thought you guys were all Armadillos down there. Thanks for the edumacation!
in reply to: 2014 Hunting #49947Very warm opening day Arkansas archery season. This is my friend and mentor with a nice five point( sorry can’t see rack)that he harvested with a Bear grizzly and Razorhead broadhead. He is “technologically challenged” so he doesn’t get on the forum but has been an avid reader of Traditional Bowhunter Magazine since it’s inception. He is the local recruiter in our area for the sport of traditional bowhunting and has mentored several young men over the years.
Good for him! Tell him us Yanks here in Michigan give him a Hi Five:D
in reply to: What's your back-up bow? #48436Bear Grizzly. 50# at 28″. A bit heavier than my “go to” Jim Reynolds Thunderstick, which at 45# and light as a feather suits me fine right now. If I ever go back up in a tree, I’ll use it since it’s a bit shorter.
in reply to: What ya got goin? #48418Day 7 of heaven here in Michigan! Sunshine, cool mornings and mild days. 7 days in a row. I wish I could press the hold button! The foliage ought to be fantastic this year and is coming along nicely. Too bad we lost most of our ash trees and the yellows they brought!
in reply to: 2014 Hunting #47865Dang you guys! Stunning pics and places to be. And that quiver Alex has…ugh…I didn’t need/want anything but that beauty has me about convinced to carry my bow naked too! The lightness of a good bow makes me wonder how I ever carried a rifle around. I’m spoil’t these days and it’s good:D
in reply to: "a safe and painless death" #47854Well done. It never fails to amaze me that Roderick probably drives a car and once in a while squishes a rabbit or a squirrel. Some of those are pretty gruesome endings too and usually totally wasted.

I hate to play the sour note in the band but… I listened to the entire interview and found myself getting irritated at wasting a half hour. I kept waiting for some real meaningful discussion, and didn’t hear it. Just a bit of nibbling around the edges.
I didn’t care much for the interviewer. He just threw some softball questions and told us more about himself than I cared to hear. I think I heard a little aggravation in Dave’s voice too.
I think Dave was expecting some more interesting and meaty questions than he got.
Listening to that interview was like watching a lamborghini doing 25 in a school zone.
That is so true! Though I enjoyed it, it was nowhere near the depth of chatter you get on this site. G;lad to have an honest critic here.
