in reply to: Lost Season, Maybe Worse #28237
Best of luck Don with your surgery. BTW, vodka goes farther than beer:lol:

in reply to: Hunting Practice? #23285Clearing your mind so it’s like an open channel can’t hurt in hunting. Let it be a receiver and not full of static. I like the analogy of a quiet, clear night, filled with brilliant stars. That once in a great while shooting star being the intruding thought. If I can sit and think as much as the trees, I’m good:D.

I just spent two weeks in very close jungle doing army stuff, which was two weeks of never talking above a whisper and always moving slowly and quietly. I’ve seen cassowaries before in built up areas where they’re used to people but never a wild one. Well there was plenty of sign of them out there and my two scouts and I got the jump on one (at bowhunting range) while leading an entire platoon through the jungle. That’s about 30 guys, all carrying rifles, machine guns, HE weapons and carrying packs of around 20-30kg. Goes to show how far a little field discipline, quiet deliberate movement, can go.
The point I’m struggling to make is that being out there, quiet and observant, regardless of what you’re actually out there for, affords you the greatest opportunity for learning. At least in my experience.
That being said, having an experienced mentor, even someone who is only more experienced in a particular environment, to go out with would be of immense value as well.

PS
The height of field discipline was shown by one of my guys. After laying still on our stomachs for about 8 hours in pouring rain, the rain let up, sun came out and a snake came slithering out of the undergrowth and snaked it’s way across this fella’s back. He didn’t move a muscle, make a noise or anything. And this was a day after one of my guys was casevac’d for a serious snakebite!
Ha! Peer pressure on your P.S. part maybe:lol:? I’m guessing if he ran off screaming he may have suffered more than if the snake bit him? My old world Grandmother made me associate the word “snake” with “ax”. I know better now, but snakes are too ‘other” for me to warm up to.
in reply to: What ya got goin? #22426Here’s another “middle of nowhere” thing I saw a few days ago in Michigans’ U.P. There wasn’t a house in sight. There was only one quite a ways down the rd. Must be an old goat there sick of being hit by gravel from logging trucks.
in reply to: I'm so tired of working… #22179I hope so! Don’t become a “case ” yourself:D.
in reply to: Update on Larry Fischer vs The Bastard #22176I never knew the man but followed his story. And was touched by it. Peace to him and good health to you all.

and…I ain’t kiddin – that’s the best open shot I could find! Acorns were falling like rain too.
in reply to: What ya got goin? #7933Here’s 2 others I’m sure no one wants to miss:lol:! A little foliage and the view from my seat. I’m finding a lot of joy in just going out and taking pictures of my hunts. I always bring something home that way.
in reply to: What ya got goin? #7917Here’s a couple from my world. I had a few more but they exceed the 200kb size so I have to resize sometime. I saw a bushel of squirrels yesterday and that was it. So go figure, I’m walking out to get the mail today and about to cross the road, and I hear the screech of brakes locking up and 4 hooves flailing in the ditch by my mailbox. No one hurt and the doe got up and limped off. I sure hated to see that. Off to Michigans’ UP this coming Saturday for a week. A lot of this seasons’ eggs in that basket. Less is more for some reason these days.
in reply to: Need Encouragement #7908My 2 cents here…just enjoy it all. Don’t worry about confidence in the shot. Until you have some confidence ,just enjoy the outdoors. It does not have to be an ordeal. Until then, practice with what you have and handle the bows that feel and look good to you at your own pace. Through some sort of osmosis, you’ll find your place. Give yourself a break basically:D
