in reply to: Things That Might Bite #23221
Woodchucks! I was throwing bags of fertilizer off a p.u. and Momma must have had kids in that high grass. She growled like a little Grizzly and kept me on that truck a while. Am sure she’d have sawed some shin meat off me if she could have.
in reply to: Nature is so entertaining…. #20392i walked up on 2 hen turkeys right at my feet in knee high grass. They jumped up and started squawking an flapping just a couple feet away. I thought “turkey attack”!! I had a bunch of fuzzy little turkey nuggets running around my feet. Boy those Mommas’ were po’d. I left and didn’t bother them.
in reply to: Things That Might Bite #20387Steve – glad all ended well! Lightning is scary stuff, especially when it’s right on top of you.
in reply to: Things That Might Bite #19814Downed primary (electric lines) in wooded areas. It would be easy to get kilt if not paying attention. Watch for these lines on right of ways, particularly in overgrown wooded areas now that we’re in “storm season”. If you can’t see it in the air, back out and call it in. It’s almost invisible until you’re right on top of it and you don’t want to do that. A tree could be pulling it down low to the ground and it’s just that easy to walk into if you’re not paying attention. Stay safe my friends!
in reply to: Going Cuckoo #15309Nice little victory in finding out what it was! Don’t believe I’ve ever heard one. I’ve lived in New England and Michigan and I wonder if that’s out of their range? Something to check out now…
in reply to: Grilling Game Meat #14055You guys have me wanting to go look for rd kill now:lol: Thanks for all the good info. I will use it.
in reply to: What ya got goin? #12894in reply to: outdoors/backwoodsman Class #12885You have some great suggestions up there. I will throw out teach “opportunism”. If you find some shreds of birch bark, stuff a few in a pocket for a fire you may someday need, if you find some ripe blackberries, stuff your face:D, remember that hollow log or other natural sheltering places, etc. Teach them just enough to appreciate how much our ancestors had to know to survive and how humbled we would be stepping into their world, as they would ours. The old term, maybe not pc, but the best of the meaning of “gone injun” strikes me as a worthy nuance.
in reply to: What ya got goin? #60341Those in Michigan probably know, but we have our first confirmed case of CWD in our wild deer now. Our DNR has put its contingency plans in force, but the genie is out of the bottle. Am hoping for the best.
in reply to: Canoe paddling – Backcountry College #60339Always enjoy the videos Clay. When I croak I know I’ll be OK if I’m seeing the scenery and hearing the soundtracks of your work after I give up the ghost:D
in reply to: Ground Game #57148If you find one you like, go for it….but beware the hunting “industry”. They will try to sell you a bunch of junk to carry around. Think light.
in reply to: What ya got goin? #48345First Ladyslipper I’ve seen in a long time! A real treat. Right up there with finding an arrowhead or a shed antler:)

I’ll be thinking of my Grandmother, who, when I found out as a kid she lost 3 brothers in WWII, couldn’t talk about it and teared up all those years later. Upper right in the pic is her brother Peter I had sent to me years later. He was only 30 when the battles in France took him. I hope all like him over the ages have found eternal peace. I look at that pic everyday and hope he somehow knows he’s not been forgotten.
Scott
Neat photo–4 soldiers and a Marine–on right lower level with cigarette in his hand–any idea who that is?
Mike
I’ll be damned, I never picked out that the guy on the lower right was a Marine. Leave it to us civilians:oops: The Marine is either a guy named Red DiFrancisco or Eugene Albright. I think it’s Albright, but the pic doesn’t say “bottom right”.

in reply to: Possibles bag #35810I have to go out in my shed and explore some possibilities. I’ve had a green canvas bag, shaped much like a quiver hanging in there for years. I never really noticed it in recent years, but what with all the yard work I’m slaving at… It was used for storing the “gloves and sleeves” of a utility lineman. I qualified once to use them, but never did and somehow still have the bag. It even has a clip for a sling…
