Sharpened those up and put them on some cedar shafts for elk/deer hunting. In your opinion, do these past muster for the kind of broadheads you describe above?

Those Grizzly’s will do the trick!!!!!!!!!

Get up earlier, start drinking hot liquids and have a hot breakfest. This should get you motor running before hitting the woods. A dip of Cope works wonders too!

Dave- Excellent! Gald to see it is going well. I’m definitely chomping at the bit to get out. Leaving Friday!

I totally agree about the smokepolers. I wish they would let them have their week but give us archers an extra week going into Oct. Now that would be the bomb.

Hey have fun the rest of the season and I’ll catch up with you when I get back at the end of the season.

          Happy Hunting

You may get lucky with arrow placement, or you may not. Why take a chance? And man, that’s a fast bow at 55#. Good luck, dave

            Hey Dave,

Definitely going with the 680’s! They fly so well. So this bow is fast? I haven’t kept up with velocities and not really sure how it stood up? So that’s good to hear that it is fast! Best of all for me it is hit’s were I aim it!

BTW…how goes the elk battle? Any luck yet?

              Hello Ed

I’m using original Elburg 160 gr Grizzly’s. I believe I got these back in 1987.

I let you know if I blaze an elk!

I use both. However, I gavitate toward LB”s more than RC’s. I think I shoot LB better.

                    Doc

Glad everything is going well. Excellent write up, truely enjoy reading your findings.

So at what % do you consider Ultra-EFoC? My current elk set-up is a CX Terminator Select shaft 45/60 w/ 100 gr brass insert. Elburg 160 gr Grizzly w/ 125 gr steel insert. This gets me 678 gr arrow and 28% EFoC. Out of my 53@28 McCullogh Griffin LB (I pull 28.5), this arrow hit like Thor’s Hammer.

Thanks for all you do, and the write up on the 54# Lb gave me the direction to work on the arrow that I am now using for my Griffin LB.

                    Be Well

Depends on what you are hunting. Snuffers are good heads. There are a lot of great heads on the market.

I personally like Grizzlys. I use old original Elburg 160 gr Grizzlys. I also use older 160 gr snuffers. However, I like the Grizzly because they fly much better and will penetrate bone better. Basically, you need to find out what you like and what works for you.

Good Deal!!! Glad it worked out. By bareshafting you can learn a lot what the arrow is doing. My experience has been if I can get those bare shafts hitting where I aim and hitting the target almost square maybe slightly weak they will be spot on once fletched. I typically do this at around 10-12 yds. I feel if they are stabilizing this quick they will be fine at distance.

                        Good Luck!

Based on what you stated, I’m leaning toward your arrows being too weak. Here are some thoughts:

Do you have room to shorten the shaft? If so I would give it a go to see if you can stiffen up the spine some.

The reason I’m leaning toward weak is you are getting nock left. (right hand shooter?) If lefty I say you are too stiff. Is this with bare shafts or fletched or both?

Even though you are shooting wood, I experienced the same thing with carbons. I thought I had them tuned but they were still weak. Fletched shafts would wiggle a little but would go where I was aiming. Once I shortened them up the wiggle went away and the bareshaft was hitting the target square with no nock left. Also, once I shortened the shaft the nock high also went away. i believe you are experiencing this since the shaft is on the weak side and it is flexing up off the shelf.

                          Hope this helps some.

Well for me there have been a few fav bows over the years:

1987-1989 it was my 62″ Wapiti TD RC 60@28

1989-1998 it was my 69″ John Strunk Spirit LB 70@28

1998-2010 it was my 60″ LaClair Grayling Spirit RC 62@29

Current: 60″ John McCullough Griffin 53@28

Still like them all but the Griffin is getting the ride this season.

It will vary quite a bit, but it does seem that the draw weights are coming down to that mid 50’s or less. I’ve always shot 60-70# bows. This year finally got my Griffin and it is 53@28 and around 55 at my draw length. i must say that the lighter bow is a joy to shoot, but I never really complained much shooting a 60 or 70 # bow either.

                                Rogue,

Carbons are great. Check out my posting “EFoC and Carbon Arrows”. Anyway, if you want a high FoC arrow go with a lighter massed weight carbon arrow. For a 52# bow a 250 should be the ticket. I’m shooting a 53@ 28 and pull 28.5 (so I’m in that 55# ballpark also) and my terminator select 45/60 work great. They spine a 0.397″ of deflection or 79.4#. Any arrow around 0.397 will work for you.

Any more questions let me know.

If you are getting good flight with those 2117’s w/ 200 gr head go for it. It should work well.
