in reply to: Totally Traditional #34601
Well, I know how you feel. I’ve been shooting trad for about 4-5 years now (I’ve only killed 2 with my recurve) and have kept my Mathews close by. Usually hunted bow season w/ the recurve and gun season w/ my compound. But from the start I fell in love big time w/ traditional. So much I cant even explain, which I’ve tried to my buddies who thought I had lost it and most still do. As crazy as it sounds its almost spiritual to me. Anyway, even shooting the compound at all wasn’t even fun anymore and in the last few years I didn’t even want to shoot it at all and it got where I didn’t. So at the end of summer this year, despite a few reservations, I sold compound and all the accessories. Not once have I regretted it. I love how simple I feel in the woods now and the hunt seems so much more enjoyable kill or not. Now usually I would have killed by now but that’s ok too. My senses have changed I suppose because I enjoy the hunt as much as the kill now. So, if your passion is as much as mine was/is, then you won’t regret going trad only. Good luck.

in reply to: My First Traditional Kill #9991Congrats! There is no feeling better than the first one. I’d love to hear some of the hunt details behind it. Great job!
in reply to: troubled grizzly #51768Great! Really appreciate the information Doc…..

“On a more personal note, I’m not sure why you say the knife over the BH sharpener, but I’m sure you have your reasons?! Some folk find the knife easier on BH’s, for sure. I do not.
I have both and prefer the BH sharpener for it’s quick touch up on broad heads once the correct angle is achieved. And yes, I, too, use only single bevel.”
So Doc, and whoever else….You use the KME broadhead sharpener on single bevel heads? I have been under the impression that you needed the knife sharpening system to sharpen these. I just switched to the Tuffhead and that would be great to be able to sharpen with the broadhead sharpener since I have that and not the knife system. So how well does it do on them?
in reply to: Stumpin/Killin in the South #61553OK, wow, well…i guess i should apologize because in no way did i mean to offend anybody with this. I have nothing against snakes, heck i’ve owned two for pets. However, i do think a lot more of my dog than a snake and she apparently doesn’t have enough since to leave it alone. And at the time it was gonna be her or him. I didnt take the time to study it to see it it was poisonous or not. I’m aware not all kill other predators but a lot do so I wonder the reaction if it were a coyote or bobcat? T dont eat those either. Anyway, I apologize and i’ll try to delete post or at least the picture.

in reply to: My toes are frozen……. #40992For sure i’ve never thought or used anti perspirant on my feet but makes sense. So I’m assuming just give a good spray (odorless of course) before the socks…? I always learn stuff hanging around here.
in reply to: My toes are frozen……. #40672Lyagooshka, not quite 60’s, then it might be bugs i’d be complaining with. But it’s usually upper 20’s low 30’s….enough to make a country boy shiver. Anyway, about the physical part, I would say i’m in fairly good condition, I’m a runner so I would think I have fairly good circulation. My feet is the only part of me that gets cold and like Dave, when it gets bad enough, my concentration dies.
I usually wear Lacrosse Alpha Burly rubber boots so they are definitely not to tight to constrict bloodflow. I’ve tried the toe warmer packs before but I dont recall those working to well either and I’m assuming the battery operated socks are a sham since nobody I know uses them. I dont know, maybe i’ll try to find some different socks and continue the journey. Thanks everybody for the advice.
in reply to: Hello Everyone #37973Welcome Corey, you’re gonna love it here. I’ve learned so much and continue to do so.
Good looking bow, whatcha shooting?
in reply to: Answered Prayers… #29582Congrats! they are all trophys with trad gear….that’s whats so awesome about this stuff!
in reply to: Silencer Mystery…? #26296I’ve noticed alot of you mentioning using old pieces of tire tube for silencers. This probably should be another post but since we are on the subject i’ll just type it here. I work at my father-in-laws tire business here in Corinth, Ms. He’s been at his location for 42 years. Anyway, we have alot of semi-truck business as well as the other including tractor/lawn garden tires, so old tubes are very easily accessible. Now, we also do a service called “truing” tires in which a high speed blade shaves off the tread of a tire to get uneven wear smoothed out. This is a big deal for big semi-trucks. We do alot of it, so the very thin shreds of shaved rubber accumulates very quickly. I decided to find a use for it. I took an old feed bag and dumped this rubber into it and tied off the top. Man, it stops field tipped arrows like crazy and this stuff wont wear out just the bag will. With that being said, old tubes stuffed tightly into a bag would work as good. Now unless you have someone like myself working at the tire shop, most of the time, they will be glad to get rid of this stuff. There’s my tip. Have a good one.

I started late, so I didn’t have a chance to meet many of them. There are a few shops around here that sell compound and x-bows, but nothing trad. I have gotten some great advice here, but you are correct, it is nothing like having someone who can show you hands on. As for ethics being personal, I have to point a caution flag there. Remember that 10% of the population’s ehtics deal with banning hunting. Ethics have to be based on a common set of rules. It should be about how you follow or uphold those rules, but there has to be a foundation. Be well all.

Yea Alex, you should see the looks I get when I walk into our local archery shop with my recurve…like they are waiting on me to say “nah, i’m just kidding.”
David Petersen wrote: Nick — all you need is a godd tuning mentor. After that it’s all sweetness and light …
Yea Dave, you are right, but my mentoring comes only from this group on here, which aint bad, but isn’t as good as if I had say…a neighbor that was proficient at tuning. Traditional archery isn’t very popular around North Mississippi so i’m on my own for now, but I’m no quitter so i’ll keep chipping away at it and maybe figure it out soon and can catch late season.

Also, how good to you have to be at the range before you are ok to hunt? (After my last few outings to the 3D range, I am thinking about going back to the training wheels. 🙁 )
Anyway, great posts, please keep them coming.

I’m with you, i’ve been engrossed unitl obsession with tuning and i’m so aggrovated that I cant get it right that i’m ready to sell out and go back to the compound. I haven’t even hunted with my recurve cause i’m still trying to tune my freaking arrows, not to mention the money i’ve wasted on a set of 350’s to find they were to stiff….and now i’m starting to think I just can’t do this.
(I’m mostly talk, I love this stuff to much to quit it…but I am still mad at the time, but i’ll keep at it) I can always just ask Troy.
