Toxophilites. We`ve all got one thing in common….. we love archery:)in reply to: Toxophile or Toxophilite? #53146😀
You would have to be a linguistic expert to decypher
the origins of this word. Im not.
BUTThere was a man in England around 1550, Roger Ascham who was a scholar in languages especially Greek. He tutored the children of Henry VIII. He was also a keen archer. He wrote an article
on archery which he titled TOXOPHILUS …the love of the Bow or archery from Greek. TOXO bow
The character in the book that promoted archery was Toxophile
Famous quote for the use of the bow
youth should use it for the most honest pastime in peace, that men might handle it as a most sure weapon in war.
R.Aschamin reply to: Shooting in the side yard. #51344Wow ! wish I had a backyard like that.
I can only manage a safe 20 yard rangeShooting at longer ranges really helps becoming the arrow you can see the flight to target.
It also shows your limitations as to reliable killing range. But when you launch that sweet arrow that flies true
at 50 yards….:D it feels really good. and no sight pins or
rangefinders needed8)in reply to: Wood Arrows???? #45881Wood is good
P.O.C. smells super,
Fletching you own arrows is part of the enjoyment.
Overall the beginer will get more consistency with aluminium
and carbon. carbon will stay straighter than aluminium.(beginers miss frequently)
fletching six good consistent wooden arrows is hard to do. They are easier in one respect, that is cutting to length, and yes they are more traditional.in reply to: New To Traditional-Bow Advice #22702Navy Sky pilot said, “I spent $135 and bought a used PSE with arrows, arm guard, glove, and some field tips/broadheads. “
thats my point, a custom bow is great if you can afford one but its not necessary, especially if you a beginner. You can have lots of fun and practice with a 45# PSE, samick, etc whilst you are looking for your ultimate bow, by which time you can step up to a 55# custom bow easily
in reply to: Conflicting Emotions about gun hunting… #22685Thats right in England, I can hunt deer everday of the year (different species bucks and does etc) but NO bow hunting, Cannot afford to break the law as this could jeopodise my firearms licence. I guess I do stalk the woods like a bowhunter and often get to bow range, but squeezing the trigger is a lot easier than standing up and drawing a bow.
So the extra challenge would be welcome.
Its the hunting, closeness to nature that counts and thats where bowhunting scores especially using traditional bows.
But theres no harm in bowhunters harvesting some venison with a rifle imo
I guess years ago I pulled some long shots with a .22 but nowdays I regard my .22lr as a 100 yard weapon, .17hmr 200 yards max .in reply to: Like Blind Man Chop Wood! Field Dressing Advise #21637If you are not saving the cape the first cut I do is along the throat , then to cut tne windpipe and cut and tie the oesophagus. if you scrape about an inch of muscle off the oesophagus you can tie a single knot and it will hold. Similarly a I cut and tie the small intestine near the rectum and cut carefully around and loosen with fingers and pull rectum out (not in). Care with the bladder is most important as it can taint the meat.
in reply to: Conflicting Emotions about gun hunting… #21593Im a would be tradbow hunter as sadly bow hunting is no longer legal here , but I practice every day waiting for a bow hunting trip. and I absorb myself in tradbow.
Its the hunt that counts. hunting with a rifle is fine as long as you dont regard it as animated target shooting. Its a lot easier of course, you dont have to stalk to 15 yards and you dont have to draw your arrow, your missile goes faster than the speed of sound and should hit where you are aiming at.
Theres no shame in getting some venison on the table. Only problem in the States is too many gun hunters too short a season and hunter orange
After trying many calibers. I have found .308 win admirable for small and large deer.
in reply to: New To Traditional-Bow Advice #21559Buy a cheapie 40# and have some fun whilst you are deciding on your custom bow .55# should be about right with your draw length~
