I started this archery stuff about 3 1/2 years ago in addition to the books already mentioned I would also recommend the following;Timeless Bowhunting,by Roy S Marlow.Instinctive Shooting by G. Fred Asbell, and also the Bowhunters Encyclopedia By Dwight Schuh . The last book I found used through Amazon on line . The rest I think I purchased from 3-R .Hope this helps
in reply to: Let's build a selfbow #12903I could never understand why anyone would want to spend so much time building a ‘crooked stick” when you can buy such beautiful custom bows already made! lol . Now I Totality ” get” it.That was awesome . Thanks so much!
in reply to: exotic woods #12884This is a really good question . I would also like to know more about the different woods ,exotic and others, that are used in the custom bows that we buy and own. Hopefully some of the knowledgeable experts out there will enlighten us !
in reply to: Tuning Grizzly stick arrows #11012I would have to agree . They are definitely harder to tune( and more pricey ) than your CE 250s . But once you get there they shoot very consistently . I have had really good luck tuning the Beman “Classic” shafts as well as the CEs ,which is what I’m mostly shooting now . If you like the tapered ,weight forward idea the Arrow Dynamics people make the “Hammer Head Trad” arrows. This is what my son likes to shoot .
in reply to: Any trad archers from Northern Alberta? #13059There must be some trad archers there somewhere . I live in Northern B.C and theirs lots around here . Go figure .
in reply to: Shameless Plug #41364I’m also a big fan of these guys! But beware their enthusiasm is contagious .My son turned me on to their web site last spring after purchasing a used “Hawk ” bow Built by Mike beckwith. I soon had a Hawk of my own . So the other day I phoned them up just to ask a few questions . Guess what ,wound up buying another bow . Shhhh! dont tell my wife !
in reply to: Single bevel? #11223As a horseshoer I’ve used different buffing wheels for sharpening my hoof knives . So I was curios about the wheels sold by Alaska bowhunting. I tried them and they make getting broadheads razor sharp easy . Will sharpen your hunting knife also.
in reply to: chek mate bows #11212The first bow i bought was a Chek Mate HunterII 62″ 51# @ 28.
Still my favorite. Use it at all our 3D shoots. You won’t be disappointed .in reply to: Arrow Tuning!? Help! #56512More info , Go to Alaska bowhunting [ the grizzly stik people] click on tech Tips at the top of the page. then scroll down past a whole bunch of good stuff till you get to one titled ” Tuning and matching arrows . Read it or print it ,and take it out to the back yard. Good luck.
in reply to: Arrow Tuning!? Help! #56507I struggled with this whole arrow tuning thing when I started a few years ago . If you go onto the Alaska bowhunting site there is an excellent article On arrow tuning that you can download . I found even some of the experienced guys around don’t really have a good grasp of arrow dynamics . This info will make it simple for you .
in reply to: Bow Storage (sorry for the repeat) #56497When I bought my used Check-Mate The owner said to unbrace it
when not in use . so I just got in the habit of doing that. My son was told that it didn’t matter so he leaves his braced. I’m happier with mine unstrung . Good point about about not standing them on their ends though 😳 done that!in reply to: Four wheelers… #48535Seems the ATV parasites are not just a problem in the lower 48 even up here in B.C they’re everywhere . Statistically they now out sell snow machines , even here where we get 7 months of winter . They can destroy a sub alpine meadow in short order. As far as Wolves go that argument has been going around forever here , with no end in sight lol. personally I’ll take the wolves over these stinky , noisy monsters .
