used mora blades for years probably best knife for the money . Now I have 3or4 Helle knives that I really like .(more in the 100 doller range )also some of the CRKT knives are very good . None of them are any good if you dont have good sharpening tools.

Absolutley! Might have to make anouther trip to the land of Oz for the feathers and osage ! most of the turkeys round here live in Victoria (parliament bldg.)

in reply to: Red Cedar Shafts ? #56273

Yellow cedar is a compleatly different animal than Red . heavier and way stronger . worked for the forrest service one summer years ago .Would make you weep to know how many perfectly sound yellow cypress were left to rot because there was no market for them ! These were big trees maybe 3 or 4 feet in Dia.

I too have both the diamond and stones . the diamond ones are more expensive and wont last as long but are cleaner to use . Personally I prefer the oil stones . I just like the feel of them . But for traveling and for quick touchups Ill often go with the diamond stone .Also the corse Diamod will remove material faster if you need to establish an edge on an old or damaged blade. I always finish off with a leather strop with some sharpening compound on it .Works for me !

If you’re using wood shafts you better be making self nocks. Pretty sure that’s in the tradbow T&C

Im still trying to wean myself off of carbons . Might be awhile before I tackle self nocks . Ha!

in reply to: Grizzly hunt! #10741

Growing up in a hunting camp in B.C I was present on several occations when Grizzlies were taken by clients using rifles . I was the kid who often got the job of holding the horses while the action happened ( thats why my arms are so long now ). That was 30+ years ago and I never did have any burning desire to hunt one . I did however enjoy tales of hairy encounters told by the old guys . Especially the late Bill Love who guided Fred Bear up in the tatlatui .

I have taken a couple of Blackies on two separate occations ,when they decided that they wanted to keep the dogs company on the front porch .I’m tempted every spring to pick up a tag and try for a fat black with my bow .Never quite grt around to it .

We seem to see most Grizz (and black) sign in spring and then in fall during the salmon runs . Can be a little spooky along the rivers during the spawn , lots of willow and alder cover and noisy water . Had a fisherman mauled real bad here on the Morice river last year when he suprised a big sow with cubs ! Dont think a firearm or bear spray would have helped in a situation like that !Still have the same can of bear spray I bought almost 30 years ago ! Ha. Beast defence is to move slow and pay attention . Im afraid Im not very good at either . Lol

I bought an eberlystock pack . has lots of nice features . it does seem to have a fair bit of weight to it even empty .I think i could still haul more on my old external frame pack .But the Eberly is much quieter and better for bushwhacking !

Ha ! Dave , I laughed when I read the part about the kitchen knives ! I had the same experience after purchsing my KME sharpener. But A word of caution! Now she wants them sharp all the time . Saved my bacon though ,the other day got a dozen Sockeye salmon from a friend the same day I left for the Trad. bow shoot over in Hinton alberta ! Whoops ! Good thing our fillet knife was razor sharp ! And I was out of scalping range ! 😆

in reply to: New Shrew #14931

I have a great nothern quiver with rubber straps that fits all my recurves . Havent tried it on the Shrew yet ,but can’t see why it wouldn’t work . Had it for 3or 4 years now with no problems . I sort of like shooting the Shrew without a quiver , not sure what I’ll go with come hunting season.
