Outstanding performance ,,,Congrats. It’s a great accomplishment to get drawn at that 14 yard closeness without being busted .But you managed that along with a well placed silent arrow . Great job!

Here in southern Ohio things are much the same I suppose as anywhere else . Out of state hunters flock into Ohio in search of that BIG whitetail . Locals ride their 4 wheelers and sometimes trucks into the public land and think it’s their right to cut up the place with ruts . Plus the lazy arses that carry their drinks and snacks into the woods and leave their trash behind . The boneheads that couldn’t find their own butt if the seat of their DESIGNER CAMO was on fire , that have to trash up the woods with their bright orange or pink trail markers . Makes me wonder how some of these so called hunters make it to work or even get themselves dressed ,,,,maybe they don’t.

Around here ,if you are not driving a supersize 4×4 with a really loud exhaust and a 4 wheeler tucked into the bed ,,and everthing including the poop tickets is camo ,,,well ,,, you ain’t really hunting .

          Venting ???

I realize that the state maintains public land and salaries for Wildlife Officers and more from the money received for license and tags , and Ohio is bringing in a lot of it .

For me , the pic of the exit wound tells it all . That is amazing . Your arrows are truly super tough. I’m hoping to be able to afford the TUFFHEAD before next season .

JP , you are not alone in the WHEELS vs TRAD community . I started trad and didn’t know there was anything else. Then Dad bought a compound and I was intrigued. Shortly he gave me the wheel bow and bought himself another . I could shoot that thing like a RIFLE . Bust Dads nocks at 20 yards at will . But !!! ,,, to carry that ungodly thing hunting was like taking a scoop shovel full of hog s#$%t to the woods .

I traded the c’pound for a Damon Howattt Hunter in 1981 and things haven’t been the same since .

Congrats on your trad success and CARRY ON FELLER .

JP , I am shooting a very similar bow to your old Bear . All summer I was shooting 877+ grain , 24% FOC . Arrows flew perfect . Arrows fell short at target though . Kept thinking the eyes and muscules would catch up but never did . I removed the 180 grain bullet from the shaft ,,,,returned to 20% FOC ,,,,and all has been SWEET .SPOT ON SHOOTING AND I know the arrows capabilities on whitetail .

Slow at 152 FPS , but very quiet ,,,and arrows are perfect in flight .

              Full length 2216 Legacy,,,12 gpi

255 grain in front of shaft

              2.5 inch ,,,3 fletch

              697.5 grain total wgt.

So true ,Duncan. There are some that;ll constintly flip their tail as they do when they are suspicious , and there are those that seemingly ACT like they have never seen you .

In my experience the fox squirrel is an easier target but not my preferred meal. Whereas the grey is fine table fare and a trophy .They are QUICK!

I forgot to mention in last post ,, the Hammer from 3 Rivers is absolutely amazing . I use the 250 grain . It is my small game thumper and 95% of the time my practice arrows . My main practice is walnuts , leaves , dandelions . Whenever I shoot at my regular target my form falls apart .

The Hammer is a super tough blunt . Fluted on the sides and recessed in the front , with a bullet point in the recessed center .

No foolin’ , a direct center hit on a green walnut at 20 yards will remove the green hull and do significant damage to the wooden hull inside , many times breaking into 2-3 pieces .

So far have only slain one squirrel with these heads . An adult grey , hit square in the head , and dropped right there .

Wide and heavy blunts very rarely bury into the soil. Year ago I used the rubber type blunts that simply slip over the shaft . Would take a heavy field point and grind away the point to make it flat nosed . It adds weight and the rubber blunt lasts longer ,,,,of course I was shooting aluminum and without the field point the shaft would cut clean through the rubber in just a few shots.

I seems that I need to aim where the squirrel MIGHT be after the release . The last few I have shot at ,,,,all under 15 yards ,,,seemed to have changed zip codes and are missing some tail hair as well .

Lay a piece of scotch tape on the feather on one side . Mark the length and cut the feather with good sharp scissors and the quill with a knife. After the cut is made the tape pulls off easily. Actually used this method with the fletchin on the shaft. Was 5.5inch shield cut now 2.5 inch Quiet cut.

                        Congrats JP !

You seem to have endured quite some action as well as the elements .

                        Awesome arrow too.

Let me begin by saying I stumbled onto the Ashby Studies in 2012 and quickly became convinced of the need for a better arrow and broadhead set up . Later I found this website and the knowledge I have obtain through both places has been terrific .

I shoot a Super Kodiak 64 inch recurve ,,45# @ 28 inches . My draw is 30.75 , so I’m pulling about 51-53 pounds . My arrows are 2216 Legacy aluminum with 289 grain up front and three 2 inch fletch on the rear . It is not the HOT ROD of some bows but it is super quiet ,,,both bow and arrow .

Other than the fletching (was still 5.5 inch last season ) this is the same set up used last year to take a whitetail doe from the ground at about 12 yards . She and he yearling were feeding just across the creek from where I stood . Finally after 30 minutes of watching and waiting as they fed on the lush fescue she offered a shot thru a window in the sycamore limbs . The arrow passed thru and buried into the bank . She knew something happened but only made one jump, never flagged , and the yearling never stopped eating . She stood there a few seconds , made one more jump and just stodd there looking around . Then fell dead .

That doe was the first and only deer I have seen shot with anything that didn’t run . The silence of the bow and the

efficiency of the arrow made it possible .

I would rather have a lighter arrow and more EFOC but at this time the funds aren’t there for the upgrade . But , then too , I know that my set up is more than enough for quick clean kills on whitetail.

Best of hunts to ya .

                          I forgot to mention , total arrow weight is 697.5 grain.FOC is 20 %

That is a great story . I appreciate you taking the time to post it too.

Isn’t it amazing how more often then not that the best of memories involve Dad and hunts of many years ago ? I know Dad and I went to McDonalds and Kmart but there isn’t any outstanding memories from those outings. But , in an instant I can recall with great pleasure the time we stood thigh deep in a small hole of water in the East Fork catching fat rock bass or the Thanksgiving Day hunt when Dad and I both missed the same ten pointer .

Thanks again for sharing and wish your Dad the best from Ohio.

I’ve never seen nor heard of that . I would like to have seen it myself . When I was young the firefly was everywhere here in southern Ohio . Now we only seem to have very few in certain locales .

Guess while I on this thread I’ll answer the title question .

Started full time training on Sept. 9 for Residential Electrician . It has been some experience too . At 56 I am not so accustom to CRAMMIN’ as the young fellers say . My ol’ walnut size brain ain’t as quick as it once was .

And to make matters worse , I haven’t been able to hit the woods as often as I would like to . But , still am able to shoot every day , even if for only a few arrows , and hunt on the weekend .

Possibly. A very stout dog with short legs and long hair on its tail , being constantly praised , will keep the floor swept .:D
