in reply to: THE WEAK LINK #19798
Ok,,, just got off the phone with eplastics , in californy. They no longer keep LEXAN in stock but it can still be ordered, which means it would have to be molded .
REP said they do have DELRIN in stock at the various sizes . The .375 rod is $1.20 per foot . I have heard of this material , but really do not know about it. REP said it’s tough like LEXAN . He could not give me a weight per foot .
I plan to order a foot or two in a couple days .

in reply to: Nice End to Small Game Yesterday #18572It is tough .
Best of hunts to ya!
in reply to: THE WEAK LINK #18500Here’s a little more info on the LEXAN idea .
According to my ‘google noodle’ that rattles b’tween my ears , one could take a piece of lexan and machine it to the size needed to fully eliminate the aluminum shaft insert and the steel broadhead insert . And yet add strength and integrity to the shaft .
No doubt a solid piece acting as an internal footing would be too heavy (maybe,,,maybe not ). I see it better if it is too heavy thereby allowing a sort of ‘backboring’at a taper to lighten the material and yet still remain super tough and some flexiblity .
Here is s pricing form ePlastics.com .
Prices are for the .375 rod,,,,.250 is cheaper.
1-7 feet @ $2.23 / ft.
8-95 ft. @ 1.36 / ft.
96+ ft. @ 1.17 / ft.
machine grade lexan polycarbonate rods.
start @ .250” and follow in 1/8 inch increments to 1 inch .
I know , it’s more money and maching time on top of the assembly . But it may be the toughest arrow when finished , thereby saving money on ruined shafts .
It’s just an idea .
in reply to: THE WEAK LINK #18412I’m not computer savvy . I googled ”lexan” and came up with this ,,,,,Lexan-wikipedia free encyclopedia
Lexan is more amazing than I thought .
I’ll be looking into some prices .
in reply to: '59 Bear Kodiak replica #18280Thank you , Steve. No hijackin’ intended.
in reply to: THE WEAK LINK #17523I wonder if anyone has tried making a one piece broadhead adapter / shaft insert from LEXAN ?
I worked in the plastic manufacturing business for 28 years . Though I don’t have training in PHENOLICS , other than setting up the molds which mold the parts , I can say that LEXAN is one super tough and lightweight material . Am told it is the bullet proof canopy on at least some of the older fighter jets .
Watched a co-worker beat on a piece what was 1 inch thick and 6 inches square with a 6 pound sledgehammer . He soon was winded in his vain attempt to damage the LEXAN .
May be wrong but I’m thinking it’s light weight would allow a lengthy portion to be inside aluminum or carbon shafts , and maybe a sleeve over wood .
It can also be molded to the specific sizes a lot cheeper than machining.
Anyone here have anthing to add ?
in reply to: '59 Bear Kodiak replica #17246Steve, would you be willing to elaborate more on the ”LONGEVITY”?
The question of the late model Bear bows being capable of lasting many years has always plagued my thoughts . That along with my 2012 S.K. delaminating after only 12 months is a little more than disturbing .

in reply to: from the home page #17091Never seen flies congregate on Crisco , tho they mite be more attracted to the sweet smelling bore butter ,don’t recall seeing that either . The film of grease is so thin I don’t see it effecting anything but preventing a rusty dull broadhead .
Probably a long list of applicants to be used without using a PETROLEUM based oil .
in reply to: Finding bigfoot #16488That’s funny !
Calls to mind what a friend did back right after that da’gum first movie came out ,,,’bout ’73 or so.
This boy was about 6’5” in the 10th grade . More legs than torso ,which gave him a looong stride at a walk , let alone runnin’. He found some 1/2 inch plywood and cut out 2 gigantic pieces to mimmick the track of BIGFOOT. Then he put on his chestwaders and carried the two print/boards to the creek. He tied the boards to the bottom of his boots and eased down into a hole of water near a long and clean sandbar . End result looked like this giant came walking up out of this pool to cross the sandbar , and then entered the water again . Then longlegs goes back to the house and calls a couple of the guys that saw the movie with himself. They show up and he leads them down to the creek for some 22 shooting , not telling them anything about the tracks . You got it . He wanted them to find the tracks .
Them boneheads talked bigfoot non-stop for 3 months ,,,,ol’ longlegs just grinning and always provoking thought .
in reply to: Nice End to Small Game Yesterday #16277I agree totally on the ”SUPREME CHALLENGE”. I got one in my lap last spring using jake yelps . He made a wide 180 around me ,,,,went half way back ,,,then back again . I called sparingly and he’d gobble hard about 30 seconds after my yelps . After he returned to the end of his first 180 trek , he went silent . I faced away and purred like a hen , followed by a jake gobble …Seconds later I could hear him spittin’,,,,,no drummin’. He stepped into veiw at 12 yards .
Had my bow arm extended and tension on the string . I needed him to walk behind a huge cedar . He did exactly that . But he never came out on my side .???? I peeked around and he’d evidently heard my shirt . He was running straight away , keeping that cedar between us .:D:D
If that’s the best I ever do with the recurve on turkeys I’ll be very happy . But like you ,I intend to try again .
in reply to: '59 Bear Kodiak replica #16266Yes sir , they make some handsome bows . Based on what the Bear Rep. at Customer Service told me about the 64inch Super Kodiak , and the price of the ’59 Kodiak , I’d say it is one of their ”HAND MADE , ONE AT A TIME ” bows .
Glass and wood separated on my SK in December . I shipped it to the Gainesville factory 2-3 days before New Years . Called the Rep in mid-February as instructed ,,,,,,,,,,estimated receive date ,,,”early March”.
In my 55 years I have handled , seen and shot a lot of Bears . I do not know of one that came apart like mine . But the Cust.Ser. Dept. is very easy to get along with .
Needless to say ,,,,,I been watchin’ for the UPS truck !
in reply to: Nice End to Small Game Yesterday #16087Etter , that sounds like a fine outing for sure . The 6.5 miles is out of reach here in Ohio . There may be places that deep here but I don’t know of it .
So you’re getting ready for turkeys . Will you be hunting them with bow of shotgun ?
Our season opens 3rd week of april here .Would like to get out and make tracks in my favorite woods but being on un-employment income has kept things pretty tite and close to home .
Thanks for the tip about the Doritos .
Were you carrying your bow on the walk ? We have no closed season on varmints here which allows me to always carry a bow when scouting or loafin’ in the timber .
in reply to: Best Fletching Cement? #14948I just started fletching my own last year . I followed the instructions and advice received . Fletching was continualy coming loose or flying off on impact .
Did some more research and found Duco was recommended over fletchtite for aluminum shafts .
Happened to find it at Family Dollar for half the price asked by the archery catalog .
So far it has been flawless.
