in reply to: Worried About Myself #62086
In recent years it has turned from ”GOT TO GET ONE ” to a challege of simply out smarting the beast and seeing just how close I can get , or call it to me .
As the poem says ,,,,
‘I DON’T HAVE TO KILL HIM TO HAVE A FINE HUNT ,
BUT THE THRILL OF PULLING HIM IN CLOSE , IT IS THE MOST FUN’
in reply to: Damaged bow ? #62059I would follow his recommendations . But , this seems to me to only fill the void . If it was my bow I’d finish with a well fitted leather rap on the grip or , if money is in hand , send it back to BW to add layer of wood or antler or glass .
Just some ideas .
in reply to: Arrows (attempted build-along) #60494Very good looking arrows . I like the progressive story and pics .
Anxious to see a pic of the fletched ,,,at full draw .
I have always intended to switch over to wood but just never got around to it . Even built a cresting jig back in the ’80’s . Wood in my opinion always makes the best looking arrow.
in reply to: BUILDING THE BOW #59407Enjoyable read!
I often wonder how a feller comes up with an online user name .
So from all your trial and error , and the number of broken bows , can we assume that men of old had the same ‘TRY AND TRY AGIN’ ? and this is what actually brought to extinction the SAHARA FOREST ?
Bald spot ? My brother -in-law has one . He claims his vast amount of intelligents and knowledge has pushed his hair out .

in reply to: Ohio Traditional Bowhunters #52697Hello Mike ,,,,,welcome . I’m at the opposite end of the state ,,about 35 miles north of the river , where the OHIO BRUSH CREEK makes its beginnings ,just a ditch.
Haven’t shot 3D since early ’90’s . Hoping to make at least one of the bigger Trad gatherings this year . Maybe we’ll run into each other sometime .
Last time I used an armguard was somewhere in the mid ’60’s , as a little boy trying to shoot DAD’S old fiberglass recurve.
As an adult I have not needed one . Though after getting a better education in ”FORM” I have a need to get those bulky , cold weather coat sleeves out of the way . I made a big button of deer antler and sewed it to the left sleeve , about 4-5 inches below the shoulder . Next I made up a cord(braided nylon duck decoy anchor line) , with a small loop in one end and another loop about 1 inch long , and 6 inches from the other end of the cord . A 1.5 inch deer tine tip is attached to the end of the cord . Simply place end loop over the antler sleeve button and begin wrapping the sleeve , moving toward the wrist . When I get to the wrist run the tine tip through the other loop. Lightweight and effective.
But , it ain’t purty like a most of the TRAD stuff. I too like the ones with the knife ,,,,,,,,,they are neat .
in reply to: Aussie turkeys #49384I’m curious , Jim . Are those birds vocal ? The reason I ask is that here in Ohio a great many folks have the notion that our turkeys are stupid birds . But , in reality they are just the opposite . They will be seen displaying some crazy antics , and that quite often . But they immediately display their intelligence when one hits a call .
Even though your birds are protected could you legally attempt to call one in for say a photo.
It just may be that your birds may have the similar trait as our MELIAGRIS GALOPAVO SYLVESTRIS.
in reply to: Big cats in Northeastern Australia? #49366For your sake , Jim , I hope it’s true .
The second post after that story ? That ol’ boy has been into the ”SOUR MASH”:D.
in reply to: Longbow Turkey #43974VISUALLY IMPAIRED ,,,,,,,,,,,,that’s funny .
My hat’s off to ya ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,OUTSTANDING !!!!!!!
in reply to: Ohio making a big mistake, possibly… #43970One thing that has me puzzled about the Ohio seasons is why they moved the STATEWIDE PRIMITIVE WEAPONS season to now be after the new year instead of between xmas and new years,as it used to be . Lots of hunters were off work that week between holidays which seems to me to be more hunters and more deer harvested .
I know what you mean about the $15 tags. If we fail to fill it before the regular GUN season we are out the fifteen and have to start over with the $24 tags.
in reply to: THE WEAK LINK #42973Test results:
1st shot at 15 yards ,,clipped the elm about 1 inch inside . Arrow went off line about 6 feet . Tore a chunk out of the elm . Arrow remained straight ,,,all is good.
2nd shot I evidently dropped my bow arm . Buried in the ground under the elm.
3rd shot I stepped up to about 7-8 yards . Drilled the elm dead center . Glue failed . Shaft cut the LEXAN shoulder and allowed shaft to continue foward into the Hammers backside , thereby letting the head and LEXAN go about 5/8ths inch into the shaft .
, splitting the shaft on two sides .
Time to rethink the gluing and the collar .
I ain’t givin’ up yet .
in reply to: THE WEAK LINK #42822Well, I just finished turning out two , one piece adapters with 5 inch footing . One with 5 degree taper which is 1.375 ” in length . The other is drilled and tapped to accept the 250 grain HAMMER blunt , or 250 grain field point.
The tapered adapter alone weighs in at 130 grains . My 125 grain ACE broadhead actually tips the scale at 130 grains . Thus bring my total front end weight up to 260 grains. Sure to be a mite higher when epoxy is applied the full length of the footing . Total weight with the same broadhead , 125 gr. steel adapter and aluminum insert is 289 grains .
The drilled and tapped adapter weighs 105 grain and the HAMMER weighs correctly at 250, totalling 355 grains .
I will be testing with the HAMMER first . I do not want to ruin a perfectly good Ace broadhead . The HAMMER has those wicked , sharp hooks that should tell me something in short order . Recalling how I ruined an arrow ( bent behind aluminum adapter )when I clipped a one inch sassafrass sapling when shooting at a squirrel . I plan to shoot at a well seasoned piece of elm firewood , stood on its end , and aiming just inside the outer edge . I think this should give a substantial GLANCING shot .
I’ll go epoxy the drilled adapter in now and hopefully get in some shooting before this storm hits .
