in reply to: Practicing the "Cold Shot" #15429
Dang it man ,,,this cool air has got my arthritis workin’ overtime . My cold shots so far today ,,,,well ,,,,I couldn’t hit a barn wall if I was shootin’ from inside the da’gum thing.
Returning from another squirrel hunt this morning ,,,no shots available while hunting,,,I paused on top a low , but very steep ridge , which abruptly goes from near vertical to a flat corn field . I nock a blunt ,,,pic a specific leaf on the ground at the bottom ,,,,,release,,,,’bout a foot to the right . Probably 20 yards .
I wouldn’t shoot at a deer from that spot by no means , but that shot this morning was very disturbing .
Yesterdays shooting was perty good ,,,,,,,,,,,,today ? Like I never shot a bow before :D.

in reply to: 2013 hunting rigs #15013Hey Jim , is the Samick the bow you used to shoot your milk jug and knot in the ‘COLD SHOTS’ thread ?
Good looking rig and judging by the pic on the other thread ,,FINE SHOOTIN’
in reply to: Practicing the "Cold Shot" #14263Good shooting Jim. My first cold shot today was 6 inches low at about 15-18 yards. That ‘HAMMER” blunt sending a spray of dirt and small twigs which thoroughly makes gray squirrels loose water on their way up the nearest tree.:D
in reply to: cool air an' squirrels #14252Yes sir , ‘at be the way I do it too.
Getting ready to return to the woodlot and try again .
I was gonna take the 22 this evening but there is a ‘HIPPY FEST’ going on down the slope from the woods about 1/4 mile . I trust my judgment and shooting abilities but do not want any interruptions due to some bonehead calling the law because he heard a shot , and ruining my hunt . So it’s back with the recurve ,,,,,,,,,which I much prefer.
Majority of the OLD hippies are from Cincinnati and Dayton.
in reply to: Looking to relocate: AR or MO–Any help? #14053Southern and eastern Ohio has a lot to offer . Lots of streams , rivers , man made lakes and scores of public hunting land . I have 4250 acres within 10 minutes of home . The turkey numbers are down but the whitetail thrive there as well as the private land .
Eastern Ohio , especially in the south is nearly mountains , but in my locale it is gently rolling hills . Some will make you pause but there not too bad .
in reply to: cool air an' squirrels #14035Well it proved to be a fine morning . The air was cool for certain with a steady breeze from the east .
Made 3 shots . 2nd arrow had tail hair on it ,,,found no blood . Had I taken the squirrel rifle I no doubt would have filled my limit .
Around 9:30 a nice buck came in with the wind , from a soybean field . Once inside the cover of the woods he simply stood in one spot and surveyed the place . I was around 45 -50 yards away at the edge of the thick stuff . After 30 minutes I shot at number 2 squirrel and the buck caught me moving but did not spook . He would walk toward me and then walk away . 3 times he did this before he eventually left for the soybean field .
It was lousy shooting on my part ,,,,,,,,,,,,,BUT IT FELT GOOD!
My good friend Jon , undresses squirrels in the fashion you have mentioned . He tried to show me and I have tried , only to dismember the poor varmint. I guess I’ll stick to the old method .Been doing it for 43 years with no problem .
in reply to: cool air an' squirrels #13852season opened Sept. 1st ,,,,,I live in southern Ohio, 35 miles north of the River and Maysville Kaintuck
in reply to: Binoc recommendation #13464Mike , I’ve been using a pair of the mid size ( I guess thats right) 7×35 for about 20 years now . I keep the BIG 10x in the truck ,,,they are simply too much on either my shoulder or neck . And by the way I have changed the strap on my 7×35 to a little longer , leather strap that enables me to wear them like a back quiver ,,,,,actually they hang under my right arm and do not interfere with shooting .
I don’t care for the compacts simply because the ones I have tried just do not allow enough light to enter the glasses and I wear spectacles which is another problem .
Bushnell 7-15 x 35 manual zoom ,,,,I never use the zoom.
in reply to: Rabbit fur string silencers #13186Determine where you want each one and serve 3/8 inch , lay the fur on the string and continue serving over the middle of the fur . draw it up tight as you wrap the thread around the fur . 7-10 loops around and then finish the serving up tight against the other end another 3/8inch.
Been doing yarn this way for over 30 years .
Best wishes

in reply to: fur fletch #9514After making the above post I went to the 3 rivers catalog . OOOOPS! I don’t recall seeing the fur strips in the catalog .
At any rate , I still think it may work , if the fur is from something other than a rabbit . A critter with a little longer hair and a mite stiffer too.
