in reply to: "The Good Hunt" update #54935
Mark,
Great info. I don’t think I will even try to do the translate thing. Brain hurts as it is. I was thinking places like Ireland and Germany. I never really looked up the orient (China and Japan come to mind), but I think Eastern Russia has accepted it (probably due to the price they can get, but that’s just IMHO). I wouldn’t mind a hunt in Europe/Asia one day, but as you said, there is plenty right here on the N. American continent to keep a person busy for centuries. And let’s not forget Africa. I am just surprised that in some parts of Europe (again, like Ireland or Germany) archery is not viewed as a “viable” option like it has here in the states. Be well.

Hey now, don’t be lumping Uncle Booger’s Bumper Dumper in with those ridiculous items.
I gotta agree there. Between that and the spork, it’s one of the few things that keeps my respect for humanity going. Going where is a different story, but still…
Besides, you know the only reason that warning is on there is that someone tried it!

in reply to: Question for David Petersen #54107Depending on what the knife is to be used for, the Havalon Piranta-EDGE is a pretty cool option. No sharpening required, just pop on a new blade when needed. I have never used one, so if anyone can jump in and give a yay or nay, would actually help me as well as I am planning to order one off Amazon soon. Be well.

Not to put too much of a spin on it, but…
Since at least part of the target audience is in Europe, do you think this will have any impact on the [lack of] bow-hunting there? Seems a little off that some of the countries most closely linked to archery do not allow bow-hunting.
It would be interesting to see if this starts some talks about the ethical side of using a bow, such as the effectiveness of the bow as a weapon that is capable of quick, clean and humane kills. I would wager that this movie NOT being a hunting video could do just that.
Again, would be interesting to see. Be well.

Like the song goes… “2 out of 3 ain’t bad”.
They are good looking birds. Ben Franklin wanted to make ti the nation’s [bird] symbol. Their eyesight is amazing. But smart? They are dumb as a box of rocks. The old joke about looking up during a rainstorm and drowning is actually true about them. Many turkey farmers relay that very tale.
Still, they are a challenge to hunt and one day I hope to bad one. To be honest, the “down-under” version doesn’t look half bad. If they’re tough though, not for my brood. They are not into “gamey” foods.
That being said, I could replace “deer” for “turkey” in your story and it would hold true here in my area. I have had more than one “close call” when I saw a deer standing by the road from 300+ yards. Instead of trotting across or hopping into the woods, it waits until I am 2 feet away and darts in front of the car. Darn idiots. Now, if I have bow in hand, they run when they see me from a mile away. I swear I am hanging up the bow and getting a plow for the jeep. My freezer would be much fuller than it is now. Be well.

in reply to: Some Game recipes… #51874Ben,
Glad you brought this up. I have wanted to make dry-cured sausage forever now (salami, pepperoni, etc). I have the basics down, but I have not gone forward because I don’t have a place to keep them to dry. DO you just use the cellar, or do you have a temp/humidity controlled area (like an old fridge)? Be well.

in reply to: Moose (Not Chocolate)… #48555Can’t argue any of that. I have a bow being made right now. I will probably take it up to Canada when I go. I am pretty sure I can get the “where it belongs” and “sharp” parts down. I really have to work on the tuning. My LB, Hybrid and Recurve all are pretty touchy. Some days are better than others. Will definitely be working on it all summer. Thanks again to all for the advice. Definitely a huge help. Be well.

in reply to: Kansas legalized crossbows during archery season #48308Happened in PA a few years ago. Only thing I can say is that the woods are much noisier during archery season. I remember going on a Tuesday after the archery opener to Nockamixon State Park and being alone. SGL right next door, also empty. Past few years, over a dozen cars. And opening day, forget it. Nothing against X-Bows, but they do tend to attract some slobs. Not ONLY, but definitely more than, say, a longbow. IMHO.

in reply to: Moose (Not Chocolate)… #48305Archer, thanks for the update. I commend a guy for getting 3 feet for a moose with him and 2 cameramen. It just didn’t look like a shot that went deep enough to do the damage needed. I’m glad the animal didn’t go far. I have watched it in slow-mo over and over. I was wondering why he missed the opportunity when the front leg was forward and why he took a shot that far back, but I have to admit, 3 feet from 1200# of antlered fury definitely has an effect on one’s thought process. Thanks again. Be well.

in reply to: Moose (Not Chocolate)… #47764First, thatnks to all that replied to the thread. Lots of great ideas. Now that I booked the trip (I chose quebec, more on that later) I can tell you that the outfitter I chose is “Horseshoe Hill Outfitters”. I leave on the 20th of Sept, hunt 6 days and come hope the 27th. Boat and fishing are included. $2K + $400 license (and gas, etc). Newfoundland is definitely more dense in population, but this is a 12 hour drive. Newfoundland if almost double that (with a ferry) ans the lowest hunt I founf was $4500.
Next, I am gearing up for my new bow (hoping done soon). It will be an 80#er. My arrows (Al) will be just under 700 gr. and 300 of that will be on the “business” end (broadhead and insert). I just want some advice on this because of this video I found on YouTube:
Check out the video at 1:48. Go frame by frame if you can. 36 inches from an animal. I cannot believe how far OUT that arrow is sticking (meaning how LITTLE penetration is there). That scares me. I am sure the hide on a moose is tought, but that shot did not look like something done with the animal’s interest in mind. I didn’t even watch to the end, so I don’t even know if it was recovered or how far. I do not want that. If I can get a few pictures of a live moose in the wild, maybe call one in close and catch some fish, this will be more than worth it. If I get a chance at a moose, I will take it, but I want to make sure I am able to bury my feathers in that animal, especially at that distance.
Dave, sorry to single you out but could you (or any other moose / elk hunters) chime in and let me know if that video is normal or am I correct that it is not the way it should be.
I appreciate it. And any other “words of wisdom” before my trip are also appreciated.
Be well.

in reply to: What broadheads do you like? #39484The Concords I got on suggestion by someone here are fantastic heads. Only complaing is, I cannot ever get them as sharp as I want them. And no matter the “dislike” for the “fancier” styles, I have to admit my Hunor Africa is impressive, at least on the range. I have not animal trials to talk of, but the “get the job done” on the broadhead range. Be well.
