Good luck. You know success will be all that much sweeter now.

in reply to: Hand shock or "damn my elbows hurt"!! #19295jmsmithy,
Not a Dr. (and this time I didn’t stay at a holiday inn). What kind of pain are you having (sharp, dull, stabbing, etc)? When do you get the pain (when drawing, at full draw, all the time, etc)? Does anything help (anti-inflammatory, cold, heat, etc)? Scale of 1-10, how bad is it? Have you seen a Dr.?
Reason I’m asking: It (unfortunately) could be a number of things. If you could describe it a little (not necessarily here, but to a healthcare professional) it will help them narrow it down. Something like an NSAID (Motrin or Naproxen) might be enough if it’s a bit of mild swelling. You might need some RX steroids if it’s moderate. There might be an anomaly that needs surgical intervention, like a bone chip (not trying to scare you, just saying).
No matter what, it looks like you are up against the wall with timing. The faster you see the Dr. the faster whatever treatment they give you can start working. No matter what tell the Dr. you plan on hunting while on any medication as you might need to have some side-effects (drowsiness, etc) looked at. That is another reason I asked about the intensity. If you can “bear” it for the hunt (pun intended), any treatment that may get in the way of the hunt can maybe be put off until after.
That aside, where are you off to? I almost got in on a discounted bear hunt in ME, but it sold out. Oh well. Anyway, hope it gets better and good luck on the hunt. Make sure you post photos when you get back (of the bear, not your elbow).

Do these animals get this big were you folks hunt? If they do then perhaps the ones I have been seeing are yearlings.
They are not much different down here in Eastern PA. Still not easy to find, and even harder to hit, so good job. I usually see more once the farmers harvest their crops.

in reply to: Surplus Wool Quality? (it just showed up) #18210In my [humble] opinion, you can’t go wrong with military surplus, as long as you shop around. I have seen things at the local Army/Navy store for more than somehting of equal quality at the local mega-outdoors show. Internet is a great place to look.

in reply to: recommendations for a recurve #18148Not an expert by any means, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn… 😆
I still have my compund, but since I went trad, I haven’t even taken out to the range. The advice here is great. What helped me out the most is talking to people. If you know anyone with a recurve, see if they can join you at the range and let you try theirs out. I bought a recurve online for $150 and was lucky that it was in good shape. Even though it may seem like a bit, you simply can’t beat a custom bow, but don’t jump in too fast. I went from a 63# compount to a 45# recurve to a 50# hybrid. The let-off on the compound is a definite benefit, but getting out and practicing is what does it. I am still deadly at any distance that I can poke the target without shooting. Beyond that, not so much. But I am having a great time learning. One great feeling is shooting a few arrows, having them hit [near] where I was aiming, and realizing I wasn’t really “aiming” so much as I was picking a spot. I am sure I was aiming, but it felt more like I was just telling the arrow where to go. Again, this is not any great distance, but when you actually feel the improvement, it’s a great felling. Hang in there, ask questions and stick with it. People here are always willing to help. They may not always agree, but they will never steer you wrong. Have fun and be well.

in reply to: Your First Kill and Reaction #17320Sill waiting for mine (with trad gear), though I doubt it will change. With rifle, I cannot really explain. As I looked down the sights at a doe that was about 30 yards away, what I was about to do struck me. It was not a pleasant feeling. I was about to take a life, plain and simple. To this day, I still actually (secretly) hope that no animal will come across within shooting distance from me while I’m out on a hunt. If one does, so be it, but being out there is what I cherish.
I was out yesterday on a crop damage hunt (rifle) at a local farm. I saw a few doe (legal to shoot under the red tag program here in PA) that were too far away. At about 300 yards they spotted me and there was no opportunity for a stalk. My rifle is a lever action .44 with iron sights. I do not soot beyond 50 yards. On my way out, I spotted a buck (not legal to shoot under the red tag program here in PA) at about 50 yards. Point of the story? I had a blast (no pun intended) and I didn’t get dirty having to field dress anything. I guess that’s why it’s called hunting and not just killing.

You say it as if there was something wrong with that… 😆
in reply to: Donation to Active Duty Military #16285just as a sugggestion, maybe getting in touch with a place like Wlter Reed or BAMC (Brrok Army Medical Center) would get some ideas? I am Army, so that is what I know, but my brothers and sisters from the other branches might have ideas about wounded warriors. BAMC has a burn center which had soldiers that could definitely benefit. Also, getting in touch with an MWR (Morale, welfare and recreation), or even a USO. Maybe TBM can go out to the USO(s) or they can have their own account to log-in for military members waiting in airports. I have no issue with getting TBM to our men and women who are deployed, but let’s not forget the ones who have served and paid a high price for us. To be honest, I will throw my name in the hat and donate an online subscription too. Robin, just let me know where to send a check.

in reply to: 1 finger over vs. 3 fingers under #16278Thanks for the input. I will definitely spend some time on YouTube. Also, 50 archers is a good enough sample. I was just copncerned if people actually use them as you often see 2/1 tabs but very few 3-under tabs. I am glad that it’s almost 50/50. I will see how I do. If it doesn’t feel right after a few times out, I can just go back to the glove and chalk it up to experience. Thanks again.

LOL. That is funny. I have to try that disappearing trick next time I get the “Honey Do” list thrown at me!!!
in reply to: 1 finger over vs. 3 fingers under #16031I am not an expert by any means. I just started 3-under and seem to like it. It felt weird at first, but my groups got tighter and I started to really see improvement (I am new to traditional shooting). I hit a small slump, so I tried the 2/1 again but immediately had an issue that I have always had. Maybe someone can explain it to me, but when I draw back using 2/1, many times the arrow slips off the shelf. That doesn’t happen with 3-under.
Just to add another level to the discussion, I am using a glove. I just ordered a 3-under black widow tab. I am assuming the calf hair goes against the string? Is there a preference with 3-under in terms of glove or tab?
Thanks all,
Alex

in reply to: Why do you hunt #14977This may not be an answer that some agree with, but one of the reasons I hunt is because of PETA. I grew up fishing, and I never had anything against hunting, I just never did it. (To be honest, I was a vegetarian for quite a while. Still not against hunting, but against the ease with which animals are reduces to simple, pleasant-looking packages in the store. Packages that look like they meat was grown instead of being from an animal that was once alive.) Then, after many years of dealing with PETA propaganda and sheer nonsense, I decided to take up hunting. Sure, I have other reasons, like being out as a part of nature, getting off my duff and getting the blood flowing, etc, but I still credit PETA (and other eco-terrorist organizations like them) with getting me outdoors.
I still say that the safest place for a whitetail is near me while I’m hunting. Between the ADHD and lack of outdoors knowledge, it is no wonder I have yet to get a deer. Still, the day will come, and I will have PETA to thank. On my way to the farm I have permission to hunt, I usually see several dead deer. I often wonder how their death could have served some purpose (meat in the freezer) instead of rotting on the road-side. Why did that animal cross a busy roadway? Was it out of boredom or because it was looking for a source of food? Is the area over-populated? What is the cause? I think we all know where I am going with this, but this is the kind of stuff we need to continue to push to the non (not anti) hunters as they are the ones who will decide if hunting will continue or not.
Sorry to ramble.
