If you want to get into custom wooden arrows, there are many people who will take your information and build you a set of great arrows matched to you and your bow. If you can find a person local, it will be a bit better as they can actually take a look at your bow and see the shelf, off-set, brace height, etc. I just had a set made and I am very happy. I would be glad to tell you the person I used if you are having trouble finding someone, but there are plenty that advertise in TBM and on the site. As stated above, 3Rivers and KustomKing are excellent resources. And people in these forums have great suggestions which has helped me quite a bit. I am still pretty new to the whole trad thing, but I hope this helps.

Wow, no closed season or limit on private land. Public land is pretty liberal too. I guess they really are treated like a nuisance animal. I hear it’s the same in TX.

Just got it on the Kindle, can’t put it down. Soon as I finish (probably today) will move on to “Meat Eater”.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. Great books.

A little further south, there are ranches set up in several Florida locations. Some ranches around Okeechobee offer great hunting. These are not high-fence preserves, rather hundreds (if not thousands) of open acres with some shooting houses, stands and feeders set up. No license fee from what I remember. Pay for what you get. Hope it helps.

                  What a view…

Could almost make one forget about the hunt. Almost…

                  Good luck.

I guess there is some hope for me. 😆

Awesome video. It sounds like almost every hunting/fishing trip I was ever on: “You should have been here last week…”

I recently read a pretty good book on Africa, though not a hunting book, called “Whatever You Do, Don’t Run”. “If You Didn’t Bring Jerky What Did I Just Eat” is a humorous set of hunting/fishing stories. I have 3/7 volumes on Dennis Dunn’s stories on completing the NA Super Slam with a bare bow. They are pretty good. It is available as one book, but pretty expensive. It’s available for the Kindle in 7 parts. All together they are still a fraction of the cost of the print book. Lastly, “Hunting the Hard Way”. I will definitely be checking out some of the suggestions here. Oh, and yes, “A Man Made of Elk” is in its second reading. I am also going to start “On the Wild Edge” shortly.

I don’t know Troy. Your 3 acres are exactly 3 acres more than I have. 🙁 I was VERY lucky to happen across a farmer than allows hunting (mainly out of need to control crop damage). Keep at it, it’s all you can do. Good luck in TX. I have to plan a pig hunt there one day. Sounds like a blast.

Just my $0.02 about bows and eBay…

I bought a $100 recurve, and it is great. It really got me into trad archery. I have since gotten a custom hybrid (LUV-IT) and wood arrows. I might keep this bow for the kids, although it will be a while since they are not anywhere close to drawing 45#, or I might “pass it on” to someone who wants to try out traditional equipment, and have them pass it on after that (got the idea from Troy Breeding, suggestions welcome).

That being said, you should notice that I bought the “try out” on eBay, and when I realized this was right for me, I did some research (thanks to this forum) and went to a boyer, not back to eBay. Ebay definitely has some deals, but always make sure there is some sort of return policy and that you never pay through western union, or the like. PayPal or check so that payments can be tracked in case of problem.

That’s my $0.02. I definitely have not been at this as long as many of the members on this forum, but I have enough experience shopping on line (eBay included) to have had good and bad experiences. Hope it helps and thanks for the post.

                              tkohlhorst,

Good luck. Two worst times of the year, I feel, are the week before the season and the week after. Antlerless Archery opens by me this Saturday. I have been pacing like a caged lion. Regular Archery opens the 29th. Make sure you post some pictures.
