in reply to: In love again for the first time #53254Dave,
You make an interesting comment. Do you see and advantage to 4-fletch versus 3? How does it effect the flight? What type of fletchings (shield, eliptical, banana, Rayzor-type (2″))? Is this just for wood or for carbon (or aluminum, which is actually my favorite of the 3 right now to hunt with)? Be well.

I’d be worried about tree-HUGGING critter types breaking it because of their ignorance. ๐ฟ Dave, I actually think I have you beat. The Java Man “American” I just got from Gregg is so darn light, if I don’t weigh it down, it actually starts to float up. ๐ and it’s 66″! I should post a picture so that when my corpse is found on the side of some Alaskan Mountain or Wyoming Valley, someone on this forum might be able to break the news to the Mrs. ๐ Be safe, be well, happy hunting…

in reply to: Rayzr Feathers… #52069It’s funny you mention it, but yes, I do find they make a noise. It took me a while since I was only shooting out to 10 yards. When I started to go beyond that on the range, I noticed the whizzing noise. I went out to the 60 yard target and loosed an arrow and it madenthe sound the whole way there. Other than that, I like the way they look and they seem to work great. Be well.

in reply to: In love again for the first time #50861The prettiest set of arrows I have are the wood arrows I bought a while back. That being said, I am not a fan of their durability (or lack there of). I have read how a good wood shaft will stand up to a beating just like carbon or aluminum, but I must respectfully disagree, at least for how I shoot. I have taken some shots at the broadhead range (that I probably shouldnโt have) that ended with me trying to pull an arrow out of the 2X4 surrounding the target. It didnโt end well with the woodies. The set of aluminum arrows I made for myself, much better. I also have issue with shooting a broadhead arrow half way through a worn target. With my aluminums, I unscrew the broadhead, and pull out the arrow. With the wooden arrows, itโs a long process. Lastly, I am drawn to aluminum in particular due to the ease of field repair. No special power tools for cutting (like carbon), no stains, no waiting for things to dry (other than the fletch-tite). Still, if my corpse is found in Alaska ten thousand years from now with bow in hand, I would want the quiver to have nothing but wood. Be well.

in reply to: Rayzr Feathers… #50852I hope to get my broadheads in the mail soon. They look almost exactly like the Alaskans. They are 125 gr. I will have to see how they work. I just dug up some old 175 gr. heads, but they are barbed. I believe they are OK to use here, but not in other states. I am almost out of my 5.5″ banana fletchings, so I was going to try the Rayzrs, but they only come in packs of 100. Not sure if I want to commit. Anyway, thank you both for the input. Be well.

Beautiful! Working by candle light must have brought some real feeling of tradition. Hope the “spirit” of the work bring you luck. Is that sinew or string? Great job. Be well.

in reply to: In the Market For a Recurve #49577T.A.-
I’ll put my $0.02 in, but please understand that I am by no means an expert. First, it is difficult to answer the “ideal” draw weight. It is basically what you are comfortable with. I believe 35# is the minimum to LEGALLY kill a deer here in PA. Mind you legally is not always ETHICALLY. Next, what is your experience? If you have been shooting a 50# recurve for the past 20 years, stay with it. If you are a compound shooter that is just getting into traditional and shooting a 60# with a 70% let off, Maybe adjust down a bit (45#-50#). I hope those with more experience will chime in and correct my mistakes, but this is pretty much the advice I got when I was looking for a longbow.
Draw length is not really an issue as long as you are aware that most bows (unless otherwise specified) are measured at 28โ. Shorter would be lighter, longer would be heavier.
Lastly, you are concerned about accuracy (as we all are), and I agree. I can kill a moose with a well placed shot from a 35# bow (not that I ever would) just as easily as I can miss a squirrel with a bad shot from a 100# bow. That being said, one can easily outgrow a 35# bow.
If you have any archery clubs or stores that can help you try out a few styles, it would be a huge help. Also, talking to people will help. I have never owned/fired one, but I believe Shrew makes shorter bows, which could be a plus for your shorter draw.
Well, hope some of this helped. Good luck in your search. Be well.

You and me both. Just walked through a field. I think I stepped over like 4 of them. They didn’t even bother to move. They saw it was me and went back to sleep. One day!!!!

in reply to: Things seldom seen or never seen before #46654Troy,
I agree about southern birds not coming up north, but if it’s a rare sight, it might have been released/escaped from caprivity. Here is a link to the grey goshawk:

I am always interested when there is something new that pops up. But along the “southern bird” track, we are having a problem with parakeets. They either get released or escape and they are setting up shot in parts of PA. Our WCOs (Wildlife Conservation Officers) are regularly going out to destroy nests. Anyway, hope you find what it was. Would be cool to know. Be well.

in reply to: Are these broadheads legal??? #46527You may be correct. I have to go look it up now. ๐ Either way, I will think about using them in an actual hunting situation as someone mentioned the “e” word (ethics). Input on THAT aspect would be helpful/interesting. Be well.

in reply to: Are these broadheads legal??? #46416brennanherr,
I appreciate it. I know these broadheads were at one time recommended by Byron Ferguson. I forget if it was in his “become the arrow” or in a faq on his website. Thanks again for the help. Be well.
