in reply to: NPR on hunting… #63389
Looks like the “Listen to the Story” is up and working. As of the first few lines, I like it. The “tracing their food to their source…” is something I am surprised many non-hunters even understand. I guess I was/am wrong. Good show. Be well.

in reply to: My Membership Application… #63381Wexbow, I was going to send it to you but the all the customs issues came up, and I wouldn’t want you to get labeled as some arms dealer / terrorist and be put on some list and never be able to make it over here 😆 . So I will continue to “suffer” with the bow. 😛 Hopefully for many long years. 😈 Be well, and when do you think you will grace us with your presence? I am sure there are a few of us who would love to take you stump shooting and for a pub crawl or 2. Might even get in a hunt. ❓ Be well.

DWC, unfortunately, I think we are losing too many of the good and gaining too many of the bad. I really don’t want to sound cynical, but from what I have seen in my short time outdoors (and my time in the prisons [working, not guest 😆 ] and the service, and on SGL 205…), I really don’t know. We have the “if it’s brown it’s down” folks who always seem to be the ones the media spots first. Gee, thanks. Speaking of media, we have a bunch of drama queens in the press who are not interested in reporting, but in selling air time. And what sells? Remember the song “dirty laundry”? “We got the bubble-headed-bleach-blonde who Comes on at five She can tell you ’bout the plane crash with a gleam In her eye It’s interesting when people die…”. IMHO – it’s an unfortunate reality. And let’s not even bother getting into the anit(s). So what can we do? Your dad was absolutely right; a deer is never worth it. But how long before the whole thing becomes “not worth it”? And the saddest part is we are doing it to ourselves. We are our own worst enemy, yet we can be our own greatest savior(s). Well, that’s about all the cheerfulness I have for today. Be well.

in reply to: new to the game! #62398Welcome! Best thing I can say is get a general idea from this chart provided by 3-Rivers:
http://www.3riversarchery.com/pdf/ArrowCharts.pdf
Then see what people here have to say. Are you using feathers of vanes? Are you shooting off the shelf or rest? All these can play a role. There are many great articles in the forums and the magazine about tuning your bow the right way. Check those out as well. Good luck, have fun and be well.

in reply to: My Membership Application… #62395Dave, thanks. I appreciate the advice. I am not looking for speed. I am looking for a bow almost the same as this one, but with a harder punch. Right now I am at about 550gr and 15%-20% FOC. I would like to go up another 200gr or so. I was really joking about not being happy. Actually, I was amazed at how great it felt to follow your arrow in flight instead of just the “twng-pnk” when shooting the 20 yard target. It was almost like watching a well-kicked field goal find its mark. I love it. To me a sort of analogy would be hitting someone with a tennis ball or a bowling ball. One is fast, the other slow. One travels flat, the other arced. One can cause pain, the other WILL cause damage. It’s the old theory behind the flying ash can. I would still put a .45 1911 up against the 9mm in use today. Now that magazine capacity has been improved in the .45 ACPs, I wonder why we still bother with the 9mm. Same thing here. I know there are many other bows that will give me what I am looking for through speed, but the “American” just fits me for some reason. I am shooting it and my “Crow Creek Black Feather” hybrid T/D about equally as much. To compare them is like to compare my son and my daughter. I just can’t. But they both complement each other and me. Now, I am getting “wifey” (so I guess the smaller “American is the daughter 😆 ). She’ll be the strong one who is less forgiving and will keep me in line more. Be well. Wish I could make it out to K-Zoo this year, but I know if I go, I will come home with more than just another bow. 😈

in reply to: Public Land hunting ethics #62380R2,
You pretty much nailed why I would rather do a tour in Afghanistan than go out opening day of rifle season here in PA. I swear you are likely to hear something like “Hey Bob, hold my beer, I think I see one”. Yes, there are 99% good, ethical hunters out there, but the 1% tends to speak for all of us as far as the non-hunters are concerned. Here, the antlered and antlerless season overlaps, so the “if it’s brown it’s down” mentality prevails. I would like to think that your friend was shot by one of these people and not by someone who had the intention to take his deer, killing him in the mean time. If that is truly the case, I am not sure how hunting will survive, or if it even should if we the hunters allow this. I am actually happy with my Trad Bow decision. Taking pot-shots with a rifle or smoke-stick is tough. But with my ADD, I can whack dead stumps and sticks all day and still get some hunting in. Anyway, I hope your friend fared well after losing his leg and that he has gone out afterwards. The biggest shame is that he was kept out of the woods, while the person who shot him (for whatever reason) still walks them freely. Be well.

in reply to: In love again for the first time #62253Gonna have to deffer to Dave on this one. I really have no idea. The only thing I know is what I get from the 3-Rivers spine chart:

in reply to: In love again for the first time #61973Thanks Dave. I will get some Rayzr feathers and see what I can do. With a weighted tip, they should fly like a dart, so long as I get the corret spine. Be well.

tkohlhorst: not an authority on ethics by any means, but like you said: it is public land. This is something that has kept me out of hunting until I was well into my 30s. I had no mentors that I could learn these “unspoken rules” from, and the last think I wanted was to get into an altercation with people who are armed. This is one of the MANY reasons I decided to bow hunt, traditional hunt, and get into the mindset that a successful hunt is one where you come home safe, with or without game. For your situation, I can only say that I would not have ruined your spot. Knowing you put the work in, I would have asked (since it seems you have shared phone numbers) and even then, limited it to archery. But that is me. Best thing I can say is beg, borrow and plead to get permission to hunt on private land, or do what I plan to do in 13 years, pack up and head for Alaska or Wyoming (or buy a farm and post it). Wish there was an easy solution, but again, the land is public. Good luck and be well.

in reply to: Rayzr Feathers… #61887South Texas wrote: do find the bananas to be a bit noisy? Ive shot bananas and they make this Whizzing sound. My AA fletching are silent
ST, I just had an interesting experience. I made another set of arrows, this time with more weight up front. I shot at the broadhead range and had the same sound. It was sort of a “FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF-T” sound in flight, even at really close range (10 yards). I just accepted it as being the banana fletchings and went on since I didn’t think there was much I could do. Next day I didn’t want to bother with the broadhead range, so I just went to the regular target range. I got 125gr field points (I am using 125gr broadheads) and took a few shots. Silence! I went all the way out to 60 yards (mistake on my part as it cost me an arrow) and still nothing. Actually, even at the cost of an arrow, it was pretty cool to see an arrow arc in flight, especially one that I had made. Anyway, I want to see if I can mix and match points to get rid of the sound. Funny thing is, I remember my prior set of arrows making the sound, even with field points, only difference is about 85gr on the tip. Anyone have any suggestions / similar experiences? Be well.

in reply to: In love again for the first time #61871Dave,
Still have a question about fletching the arrows. If you have the bow verticle, arrow nocked, do the feathers make an “X” or a “+”? Also, are they RW/LW or stright? I think I would like to try the Rayzr 2″, but I want to make sure I am doing it correct-ish. Be well.

in reply to: Many Thanks #61868DWC,
Just to look at it from the other side, thank you all for your continued support. I, of course, an not authorized to speak on behalf of any of the armed forces, but speaking strictly for myself, I serve every single American, period. Still, it is an incredible morale boost when someone comes up to you and says “Thanks!” So, thank you all for all of your support and “Thanks!” to all my fellow service members. Be well.

in reply to: In love again for the first time #54576Dave, thanks for the info. I believe my jig comes with a 4 fletch option. I think i will give iy a try. One last question, do the feathers sit in an “X” or “+” when the arrow is on the string? Thanks again. Be well.
