So, how was it?  We need all the gory details!

You’d think they would warn patients that this could happen; after all, 1/3 of them getting this problem makes for a pretty strong possibility it will happen to the new patient also.  It would have saved us a bunch of worrying if we had known!

Just got back from getting Carol’s right eye zapped.  She had cataract surgery last year, then a month or so ago her vision suddenly got very blurred.  It turned out to be the membrane behind the new lens had clouded over with scar tissue.  This happens to 1/3 of cataract surgery patients so why they don’t warn people that it could happen is beyond me.  Anyway, they did a quick laser surgery to cut an opening through the membrane so light can get through, a 2 minute procedure.  That was on her right eye, the left will get done in a couple of weeks.  It really worked; she can read the wall clock from bed again so is a happy camper.  Amazing what can be done these days!

I feel a nap coming on after the cat kept waking us up last night,  The rain has stopped (it was 60* yesterday) so I may get out later and fling some arrows for “upper body conditioning”.

A bit chilly here also, 10* on the front porch this morning.  Had snow starting Thursday night and all day yesterday.  I have the wood stove fired up to add a little heat to the upstairs.  took the upstairs bathroom sink drain apart because it wasn’t doing what it is supposed to do, but couldn’t find any problem.  I dumped a bunch of Draino down, we’ll see if that makes any difference.  We had a “bad smell” problem for a couple of days here.  Carol was ready to have cats put down if they are spraying in the house.  I figured it out yesterday when I was bringing in fire wood; a cat had sprayed on everything in the wood shed.  The wood box sits right next to one of the cold air returns for the furnace so the odor was being pumped throughout the house.  I’ll just bring in enough wood to go directly into the fire and not load up the box in the evening like I used to.

Okay, I have banana bread to bake and a house to clean.  Later!

Just ordered some new sights for a couple of flintlock rifles, and working on a cup of joe.  I think I’ll get out and fling some arrows in a little while, after I fill the bird feeders and bring in wood to get a fire going.  Took down the tree and decorations this morning.  Have to get busy on a pumpkin pie also.

              Have a HAPPY, everyone!

Ohio has gone to licenses expiring on birthdays, plus offering 3 year licenses so I’m good for a while.  Hope your new year’s celebrations went well, and I wish everyone all the best in 2024!

The brain is going on 80, asking who wrote the article or even which magazine it was (Field & Stream, Outdoor Life, Sports Afield, Archery?) is out of the question!  Wish it was different, but such is life as my dad used to say.

Long time ago, it would have been 1968 because I was on the island of Shemya at the time, I read an article in a magazine advocating shooting a bow in the 30# to 35# range for practice, then moving up to the heavy bow 2 weeks or so before you were going to be hunting.  It made a certain amount of sense.

I traded off the Montana to a friend who built a longbow for me (hickory self bow), 43# at 28″ and it is a dandy.  I’ve shot it most of the summer and am pickled tink with it.  So I still only have two bows but that is all I need.  I’m actually getting rid of a lot of my “stuff”.  I’m pushing 800 and the kids don’t want it so I may as well get it to someone who does.

Thank you, and the same to  right back at you and everyone else!  As we used to say in the Islands (I think they still do, but haven’t been back there for Christmas since the mid 1970s),

Mele Kalikimaka e ka haole makahiki hou*!

I’m 5’10” and my draw length is 25″.

Height doesn’t really say much except what the average draw length is.  My father was 6’4″.  When we sat side by side, I was about as tall as him.  I have shorter arms and legs, so standing I was 1/2 foot shorter.

An inversion table might be good for what ails me!  Orthopedic doctor looked at x-rays and MRIs of my back and said there is little to be done.  He gave me a booklet with exercises to do, but mostly just taking it easy seems to be working okay.  The injury happened either in High School basketball practice, or when I slipped off a log and fell 6′ in a V-notch while laying out road in SE Alaska (1985).  I knew better: never walk on a moss covered log because the bark may slip, but I had to see if that was true.  It was.  Several weeks later I had a lump in my lower spine which comes and goes and usually doesn’t bother me.

Speaking of trees falling, I was out walking with the dog this morning and a dead tree fell down across the bicycle path, 75′ ahead of us.  Surprised us both!

                                  Sounds like a good time!

I’ve been taking it easy for a while.  I have a lower back problem from many years ago.  A while back I was taking a box of kitty litter out of the car’s trunk and bent wrong.  For a couple of weeks it was all I could do to get my right foot high enough to get into my trousers while sitting on the bed.  Consequently I haven’t done anything heavy like splitting firewood, or stomping around the hills looking for a suicidal deer.  It’s a lot better now but still, I’m giving it a rest.  I do get out every couple of days to fling arrows in the back yard so I’m not totally crippled up!  A friend made a self longbow for me, 43 pounds and it shoots like a dream if I do my part.
