I believe the alleged “sixth sense” is nothing more than an organism being completely in tune with it’s environment. Our senses today are so hammered by our excess culture that we hardly ever pick up on the subtle nuances a passing creature gives. But think back to your times in the woods, weren’t there a few occasions when you knew a critter was there without any hard evidence from your primary senses and almost magically said creature emerged from the brush or was standing behind you. Those times when you really got lost in your hunt. I know I have, and on those occasions I could never quite put my finger on what tipped me off to the animals presence.

Quite frankly I like it that I don’t understand how this works for me or my prey. I hope I never figure out all the little mysteries in this world, it makes my short time on this planet all the more interesting.

O.k., Montana Ford is all but chomping at the bit for it and I know Patrick’s thinly veiled attempt to sweep it under the rug is really a cry to be heard:lol: so let it rip Patrick. I wanna know what you really think about the movie. Maybe I’ll even chime in.

You know you really want to. 😉 Someone needs to do something before Montana Ford pees all over himself!:DLOL

I’ll bet Patrick is wondering how ol johnny2 feels about the political and social undertones(overtones?)of said movie. haha!

Rest easy friend, I won’t open that can of worms. And yes, I did just refer to myself in the the third person online.:D

I think your point, GTA, is that modern gun season opens the door for all the folks who haven’t touched their gun or set foot in the woods since last fall. I get it. One guy I know could’nt understand why his son’s 410 slug did’nt kll a deer at 150 yards and how he missed one at about 250 yards with his 30-30 since the dealer had bore-sighted it! Yeah, the same guy.

It ain’t just gun hunters, I know some guys hunting with a compound that have a hard time hitting a basketball at 30 yards but shoot at deer at 50 since they have a range finder and a fifty yard pin. No matter what sub-culture there are goobers everywhere.

Arkansas has a combined 48 days black powder/modern gun season. Way to much opportunity for folks to kill a deer for us to have a balanced deer herd, but as we’ve discussed before it all boils down to money. Most people gun hunt, more gun opportunities equal more permits sold.

I wouldn’t use a stopper for turkeys. I’ve killed a few with a 290 fps compound and did not get a pass through. They are tough and since they only weigh about 20 pounds they don’t absorb as much energy as a deer.

After the shot give em some time, don’t chase em like you do with a shotgun. If you do shoot one you have trouble finding be sure to look in any brush or cover nearby no matter how small. I found one I’d shot by seeing the tips of it’s tail feathers sticking out of a brush pile not much bigger than a five gallon bucket.

I killed my bow birds in a blind, but I had success getting drawn on birds wearing leafy wear out of the blind, I just coud’nt close the deal.

Good luck, it is quite the challenge. For me turkey time means Benelli time.

Congratulations Steve, welcome to the club. Trad, compound, crossbow, gun…..it don’t matter man. What matters is genuine enthusiasm and love for the hunt.

                  in reply to: Trapping?! #16065

Trapping is a lot like bowhunting, you must have intimate knowledge of where the animal is going to be. With trapping you must know where the animal is going to put it’s foot. Like bowhunting, you need to find or create a type of funnel and control your scent to put the odds in your favor. In other words make the set and place the bait so that the critter has no choice but to step on the trap. I often used a simple hole set placed among rocks or logs using said rocks and logs to funnel the animal to my set. The final trick I was taught was to place a stick in front of the trap which was placed about 9 inches to a foot in front of the bait. Animals won’t step on the stick and will step over it onto the trap while slipping closer to the bait.

The area around the trap must look and smell undisturbed to the animals, particularly coyotes.

This is just the tip of the iceberg on trapping techniques. I suggest a trip to the library, bookstore, or preferably a visit with a grizzled old trapper.

Oh, you guys think the ugly dude in the photo is me? That’s just a buddy I had sit in so I could maintain my aura of mystery on this site. Do you really think a redneck lookin’ guy like that uses words like “aura”?:D I got more of a Brad Pitt/Robert Redford look, at least that’s what my wife says.

If you’ll notice in the first picture she’s touching the does neck. She patted her from the time we recovered her till we field dressed her.

I should have introduced my daughter to ya’ll. Her name is Madison

First deer was a big doe. I shot her with a compound(I’ve only killed one with a gun). She was quartering away but when I shot she jumped string(Pearson Spoiler bow sounded like a .22 when it went off). I thought I’d missed again but couldn’t find my arrow when I stumbled across a stick smeared with blood. I was in shock. Went to get help and toilet paper cause I always heard you need TP to help mark the blood trail. We get back and tie toilet paper to a tree next to the blood smeared stick. Thats right, we tied the TP to the tree and took off unrolling as we went:D. The blood trail was good enough I could have followed it blindfolded, nevertheless, we kept unrolling TP. Upon finding the deer the woods looked like someone had TPed them for Halloween. My buddy asked me where I hit her and since I wasn’t sure we proceeded to look all over that deer but could not find a wound anywhere, then I lifted her tail…..I could not have centered that arrow in her butth..e any more perfectly if I had walked up to her and done it by hand! Nuthin but the nock sticking out!:D LOL!!! The infamous Texas heart shot. I don’t recomend trying this shot on purpose but the deer only went about 150 yards and died on the run. A double lung shot the hard way.

Oh yeah, took 2 years for the first and 2 years for the longbow. It gets easier once you start figuring things out. After that first one I started killing them pretty consistently with a compound, but this longbow is a whole nuther’ critter.

WHOO-EEE! This is a tough one.

I ran a trapline for a few years mainly for predator control and I must admit I saw more turkey, quail and rabbit then. But on the flip side it doesn’t “feel right to me” anymore and I love to hear the coyotes as well as see any of the predators around here.

A few years back, after I had stopped the trapping, I climbed in my stand and noticed a gray fox sleeping in a brush pile not 25 yards from me. About 20 minutes later I heard what i took to be a wood duck squeal but I was quite a ways from the creek. It turned out to be a second fox calling for it’s mate. Later that afternoon after they had left my sight I heard them barking. I knew what a fox bark sounded like but I had never heard a fox make that squeal before.

Now, on our lease the biologist has stated we need predator control, high fawn and turkey poult mortality. I’m torn. The predators were here first. I guess you can’t have your cake and eat it too. Everyone else on the lease agrees with the biologist so it really doesn’t matter what I think. Don’t think I’ll participate though.

What really makes me proud about the second photo is that it was not posed. She didn’t even know I took that picture till afterward. She was just looking at the does ears, fur, etc. and I took several pictures of it.

She’s been hunting with me since about 7 yrs old. Not your typical 14 year old girl, dressed her 2nd turkey by herself and did alot of this deer. While she wears makeup and likes to dress up, she wears her country girl raising like a badge of honor. She’s just cool, of course I’m hardly objective.

Got an 8 yr old that helped me clean squirrels this September. Her time is coming soon. I truly would rather be with them when they make a kill than make the kill myself. Crap, I got the shakes this mornin’ when my oldest got this doe.

I use back tension, It’s a holdover from compound days but I think it has principles that apply to trad bow shooters. For starters your using a larger stronger muscle group. There’s a bunch of other technical reasons given for this being a superior method but they escape me right now. Somebody get on here and help me out.
