in reply to: Hippo with a long bow #8586
Awesome Brett ❗ Job well done my friend. Question, how long did it take you to work upto 86lb draw weight? Have you always shot heavier weights or have you worked up for the biggest of the big game?
in reply to: Treestand Safety #8512Bruce
I’ve been hunting on/off out of trees for 30 years, bowhunting as well. Straps etc around your waist are a proven death trap. If you fall, and your spine doesn’t snap from the fall, you will suffocate without quick help as your body weight pushes up against your diaphragm. A harness keeps you level and distributes your weight evenly across your body, enabling you to hang, upright, for hours on end. I have a friend who has unfortunately proven this as he hung for 4.5 hours before rescue. He wouldve been dead with a strap.
I use Hunters Saftey Systems but there are a host of good ones.
If you have a family, you owe it to them to come home.

in reply to: Arrows change, yet POI stays same? #8502Don’t want to sound too dopey…How do I increase point weight? Already shooting 315gr heads…are you referring to footing the shafts? How does one do that?
Why is nock kick not important? It appears a lot it seems in various literature / discussions etc…just wondering. Thx Doc.

in reply to: Arrows change, yet POI stays same? #8476Hi Doc,
All shafts seem to be hitting nock left, generally left of center line though, I must admit, some will hit right…of course it could very well be the shooter 😳 I did change brace to 8 5/8″ Jury still out though the MFX seemed to fly a bit better. ABS shafts kicked hard nock left…

in reply to: Arrows change, yet POI stays same? #8007I JUST got that post in under the wire as I Once again got the time out, you’d better refresh etc warning!
Isn’t technology wonderful. :twisted::roll:
BTW – TradBow Admin folks – please don’t take my rant as a slight / dig at you folks. You provide multiple fantastic services/products to all of us “archery mad” loons…I just want to take my laptop trap shooting…:DPULL:!::twisted::twisted:
in reply to: Arrows change, yet POI stays same? #7999I can’t believe this is now the THIRD TIME I”M TYPING THIS….System keeps kicking me out saying I’m timed out!!!!
:x:x:x:x:x:!::!:Anyway – here goes AGAIN.
Been trying to tune according to Doc’s recommendations etc in previous posts/research etc. I’m finding, I THINK (:!::!:), that my MFX 400 flying A BIT better than ABS Alaskans or Sitka’s but not really sure. I have moved out to 40 yards and that has helped a bit as Doc suggested. I’m shooting a Widow PMAII 50#@28″, 62″ long built in 2006.
I have Foc of 23.73 with Alaskans and 24.58 w MFX arrows. I’m shooting 29.5″ shafts with 315gr ABS field points (hunting with Doc’s ABS name sake broadheads – yes I know not actually your product – thanks ONCE AGAIN for your selfless dedication). My arrows are fletched 3 – 5″ feathers, left wing grind/helical on a 7″ cresting wrap. I’m braced currently at 8.3″. Folks at Black Widow recommend 8.25-9″. SO FAR I’ve had best results with 8.25. Gone up as high as 8.5″. Thought 8.3 was it but after moving back, more shooting etc. 8.25 is the mark. I will continue shooting throughout the factory rec’s and perhaps beyond. Unfortunately here in No East NJ we are experiencing “pre-Irene” weather nonsense. I don’t mind hunting in the “nasties” but trying to tune/make adjustments in it is a big PITA:!:
Need to cut short here because if I get kickied/timed outone more time it’s going to cost me a new laptop as this one flies into a wall………
Any thoughts ideas are greatly appreciated. I am trying to achieve as close to “perfect flight” as I can get and its making me a bit nutty. I’m trrying everything from form changes to release/grip changes etc (shoot split fingers, bow has an Asbell grip). My arrow flight w fletched arrows is not terrible. From a hunting perspective, I’m consistently putting arrows in 4″-5″ circle out to 20 yards and 7-8″ out to 30 yards so my accuracy is ok ( can be much better I know – I’ve been a “compounder” for 30 + years – even owned a “speed shop” for a few years in early 90’s. My groups w/ very big name compound, mechanical release, overdraw etc etc etc routinely 3-5″ with broadheads out to 50 yards) I know that’s unrealistic (at least in MY hands!:P) but I REALLY feel we all owe it to the quarry, as well as our fellow bowhunters – past present and future to be the best shot we can be….Please help!!!
in reply to: How’s the outlook for deer in your area? #62429Hi all,
Deer outlook is kinda tough to pin down in a lot of places. As for my NY life, #s never been high where I’m at (Adirondacks). That being said though, I’ve seen ton of deer (more than average) this year, including A LOT of fawns. Huge berry crop this year. We have definite issues w predation. Lots of coyotes and bears
awa fair # of bobcats.
NJ another story. Alays see ton of deer. Lot of animals, w good to excellent habitat. Problem is overun in a lot of areas. If you hunt all legal weapons/seasons (bow/mz/crossbow and shotgun) you literally could shoot 2
or more deer per day (varies by
zone and season) from Sept 10 up
until mid FEBRUARY (again depending
on zone etc). Truly an AMAZING
outlook and wonderful place for my
12 year old son to “cut his archery teeth” so to speak. He and his brother have taken a number of deer over a few Texas trips awa a bunch of critters in Africa but THIS year is the beginning of their archery lives and they very pumped. Good w rifles and shotguns. I’ve had my big guy shooting for two years now to be sure he’s ready. And he sure is!
Get out there gang, whether u see 1 or 100 deer. It’s all good!
:D:lol:in reply to: Arrows change, yet POI stays same? #61576Will do.
It’s incredible having this kind of access to you! Hope all appreciate just what an honor/pleasure we have here. ❗
in reply to: Arrows change, yet POI stays same? #61502Ok Doc
I’ve played around with all three arrows and found that I no longer like 8 3/8 brace but rather shooting better at 8 1/4. That being said, still have work to do as I still not seeing a very discernible difference.
Whenever I think I prefer one shaft over the other , I blow a shot or two and then prefer a different shaft.
What am I doing wrong?
in reply to: 10 Days and counting… #55835Oh,

in reply to: An in depth look at "Bare Shaft Tuning" #55786Thanks Doc, I’ll be stripping fletching on one Alaskan and one Sitka (already have MFX bare shafted). Hope to shoot this afternoon…I’ll report back. You’re the best.:D
in reply to: Arrows change, yet POI stays same? #54930Is idea Doc that by doing so will give me which is the “better” setup?
in reply to: Ground Blinds for Idiots… #54825I was very composed. However I did manage to make up a few new words heretofore unknown to the english language:shock:….and, oh yeah, had to disgard a few slightly soiled garments…
in reply to: Arrows change, yet POI stays same? #54811That’s the thing Doc,
28″ draw
groups are centered, at 20 yards and range from 6″ to 10″Bare shafts are in straight as an arrow (no pun intended :lol
Sometimes I’ll throw the odd arrow or two way off (10-12″) but that I attribute to my lack of concentration follow through etc as it’s never the same shaft…
